Piece of Work: An Enemies to Lovers Office Romance (Red Lipstick Coalition Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.1 out of 5 stars 3,594 ratings

My summer internship at the Met is going to be hot, and the temperature has nothing to do with it.

Because marble isn’t the only thing that’s hard at this museum.

My cocky boss’ body is as chiseled as Adonis. His lips as sculpted as David. And his ego is the size of the Guggenheim.

You know the type—wolfish smile and the gravity of a black hole. The kind of man who sucks all the air from the room the second he enters it. He thinks this internship was wasted on me, and he doesn’t hesitate to let me know.

But he’s wrong, and I’m going to prove it to him. If I can stay away from his devilish lips, that is. Lips that cut me down and kiss me in the same breath, leaving me certain he’s on a mission to ruin my life.

And maybe my heart, too.

I was the kid who stayed inside to read.

As a four-eyed nerd with a bad perm, I was no one’s dodgeball pick, but I had a lot of friends. Frodo and Bilbo, for instance. Kristy, Stacey, Claudia and the gang (iykyk). Once, in the third grade, I wrote a teen murder mystery inspired by Christopher Pike. On solving my mystery in twelve pages, I decided I was a terrible writer and should never, ever do that again.

Fortunately, I didn’t take my own advice.

I write romance for that feeling you get at the end, like you’re standing on top of a mountain with a backpack full of hundred dollar bills. I write romcoms because is there anything better than banter and grand gestures? I write because I love to create and I love words. I love books, and I love stretching my imagination. I love love, and if you do too, bring your coffee and have a seat. I think we’re gonna be friends.

Holy MOLY. Staci Hart did it again. Here's a preview of Piece of Work: a powerful man and beautiful woman; classic art and kisses in front of Jesus; Italian sundresses and candid selfies; swoon-worthy love scenes and TONS of self-growth. If that sounds appealing to you (which, uh, DUH — of course it does!) then keep on reading. Nobody does rom-com/dram (romantic comedy/drama for those not acronymic-ally inclined) like this lady, I'm telling y'all. Just when I think she's hit the peak of an amazing romance, she knocks it clear out of the park with yet another story that captivates your heart and soul. Piece of Work was no deviation from this pattern, so if you don't mind, I'd like to geek out with you right now. Of course, we have to start with the characters. I LOVED these two, especially together. Rin is a great heroine who learns to grow into her own skin and realize her own badass-ery. She is a Dutch-Korean girl, so she is super unique looking (in the BEST way... seriously, check out Staci's Pinterest inspo board), and has to learn to embrace her height and her confidence. The only critique I had was that I felt the transition was really quick, and maybe a tad unrealistic. However, in hindsight, I think this way ended up being better, because it leaves more room for the really complicated plot: Rin & Court. I want to eat an Oatmeal Cream Pie now, because those are her favorite snack. I loved watching her overcome her doubts, learn to become as self-assured and confident as she needs to be to keep up with Court. Speaking of Court…. Court, Court, Court. This man is DANGEROUS. Do you SEE that banner/cover? *fans self* On a real note, the journey for him to let go of his past experiences and memories is looooooong and there were definitely certain parts where I wanted to punch him in his chiseled face! In his own twisted way, for much of the book, he thinks he’s doing a favor for Rin. I could never hate him for it, though, because I could see his potential as a kind, caring lover from the first moment we pop into his head; he just had to grow enough and learn to relinquish his iron-grip control on every facet of his life before he could step into that position. He’s hot, charming, and smart as hell. Sign. Me. Up. The moments in the book where he and Rin geek out over Renaissance art are some of the best in the novel — it shows how well matched they are. The writing was skillful and witty (as always) — I found myself highlighting lots of beautiful, well-worded phrases and just as many laugh-out-loud moments, too. Set in New York City like all of Hart's other novels, PoW is a sexy, sophisticated blend of art and culture. I loved the setting of the Met — it's one of my favorite places to visit in all of the Big Apple -- and I loved the detailed and accurate art mentions. It's clear Staci did her research. And Italy. I now have a lethal dose of Italian wanderlust because of this book. Gelato and sundresses and *hot lunch* and Michaelangelo’s David and GAH! It was simply magical. Also, it was DUAL POV!!!! I love when a romance is from both perspectives, as it truly rounds out the story and makes it so much more REAL. Especially here, being inside of Court’s head and seeing why he does the things he does makes readers fall for him that much more quickly. With Rin, her perspective is needed to see the transition from wallflower to “boss bitch,” and it makes her a lot more relatable to many of the readers of this book. Here are some of my favorite quotes from the novel: "That is feminism — the right to live your life however the hell you want regardless of whether or not you have a vagina.” “I’d finger you in front of Jesus any day of the week." And my personal favorite... “She was sunshine and rain on scorched earth, clean and fresh and honest, and as the first shoots of grass rose from the ash, I found myself kneeling in the dirt, cupping my hands to protect it, willing it to grow.” In case you haven’t figured it out yet: READ THIS FREAKING BOOK! t’s witty and smart, creative and romantic, and just all around an amazing read. Do yourself a favor and pick this bad boy up as soon as it drops. ;)

Staci Hart never fails to amaze me with her incredible stories that tug at my heartstrings. Her books are always so much more than I ever expected. Piece of Work was a true masterpiece and one of my favorite books by this author.

Rin is my favorite kind of heroine because I could see a bit of myself in her. She's shy, a bit awkward, determined, quirky, funny, loyal, and a great friend. When she lands an internship for her dream job her lack of confidence threatens to hold her back. It's amazing what some encouragement from her BFFs and a little tube of red lipstick can do for a girl.

Court Lyons is the curator of museum and Rin's new boss. He's intimidating, powerful, guarded and complex. After his first meeting with his new intern she fails to impress him. The more time he spends with her the harder Court finds it to fight the attraction that simmers between them. Rin and Court are my favorite couple from this author. They are so well matched that I couldn't help but find myself rooting for them.

This book had a bit of everything I've come to expect from this author- romance, humor, angst, amazing characters, and all the feels. I loved the underlying message of self acceptance and learning to be happy with exactly who you are. Piece of Work was a brilliant work of art that held me captivated until the very last page.

I haven't read a ton of a Staci Hart and I'm not sure why not. Because each book I read, I fall in love with the characters, the setting, the obvious research put into the storyline and the strength of the female. They are NOT weak.
Piece of Work definitely made me take notice of Staci and put her back onto my list of Must Read authors. This was a little romance, with a side of comedy and a wee bit of angst. It was a perfect combination for the art world and the awkward college girl that wasn't so awkward once that lipstick glided across her lips.

"If you want to wear red lipstick and curl your hair, do it. If you want to wear no makeup and shave your head, do it........Because THAT is feminism-the right to live your life however the h you want regardless of whether or not you have a v."

Rin and Court are both their own works of art. Rin is a beauty hidden in shapeless clothes. Her love of art and the way she lives and breathes it is art in itself. Court is hard on the outside, but hurt on the inside. His beauty lies in his knowledge and love of art that he wears proudly.

"She watched me like a giraffe watches a lion-she was every bit as lanky and knobby as one, and I was every bit the predator she suspected me to be."

This was an office romance that took me from New York to Florence and back again. It was two people fighting against their feelings, but once their guards were down, who knows what could happen.

Perhaps me making a list of things that stood out to me would be helpful....
*I adored Rin and her friends. The way the loved and supported one another fully is #friendsgoals
*I like the idea of the Red Lipstick Coalition
*The art world appeals to me and that really hooked me
*Loved that Staci included a minority in her story. We need more because our world is a rainbow.
    *Rin realizing her true worth
*Court letting loose in Florence and seeing where things could go
*A negative was the office romance and the way it seemed a little forced in some parts. In the day and age of putting the female (and some males) in a position to accept advances in order to succeed didn't exactly sit well with me. It wasn't exactly like that, but enough that it effected me. Luckily, that changed more toward the end.
*Court trying to "save" Rin. No no no! just No.
*Court realizing his mistake and where his heart truly was. YES!!

Overall, the story was one of strength and beauty in a woman. Bringing ones own fierceness everyday with or without makeup and clothing. Finding your worth and understanding it all. I loved seeing Rin become a force to be reckoned with and meeting her match. She was a site to behold. And her friends? Humorous and the glue to her belief in herself. I adored them and can't wait for them to get their stories. Their lipstick has so many more truths to tell them.

"I want to know why you're here and not over there, riding his face like a hobby horse."
Where's our next hobby horse, ladies??

I liked the wording, the prose of Staci Hart's writing, her editor and she must get along well, because the editing looks effortless for her style of writing.

I am in love with Rin's character development. She is smart, fierce, well-spoken, witty and overall a great heroine with hints of self-doubt. Or maybe an abundance of it in the beginning of the story.

Rin always sticks out of a crowd. She is tall - I guess compared to the average height of a woman in the US - clumsy, is into books, studying and has no idea how to speak up and stick up for herself..so instead she covers herself in every way - her true opinions, her personality aren't expressed the way society would expect it.
She was relatable in a way I found myself drawn to her. She gradually gained confidence, and was lucky to have a strong support system around her to do so.

I could actually picture why she drew attention from the well-accomplished Court, altough I would've preferred they'd gotten to know each other better before the red lipstick made its magic. My only problem with the book was this: I didn't feel the connection between the main characters on the level that the story tried to sell. They lacked the key factor of communication, I felt they kind of talked at each other instead of talking to one another.
I also found Court a bit too much. He was coming off really assertive, sometimes borderline aggressive in persuing what he wanted.

But, alas, I really loved how Rin came out of her shell, so I gave the book 3 stars.

Staci Hart writes beautifully, the intricate detail of fine art is the world we find ourselves in within this book. Add the fact the characters move flawlessly and effortlessly about, within this push and pull romance is just perfect !

Rin is beautiful, shy and awkward. Landing her dream internship. But what I adored about her was her sassy, no nonsense attitude, the confidence that grew and how she found herself at was and able to put Court in his place time and time again.

Court came across egotistical, arrogant and angry at the world. But as the curtains fall and you see behind the charade, he’s anything but. He is protective of his heart and finding his way back to love isn’t easy, it’s something he didn’t know he wanted and tries to stifle the feelings !

The push and pull between the characters and the chemistry they possess is just what is needed and it is played out perfectly !

The story crafted by Staci is a Rom Com and there were some great moments with the banter and dialogue between the character. The tale is sweet, fun and sexy to boot.

Totally worth a read especially if you are a Staci Hart fan, if you haven’t picked up a book by her before, firstly what are you doing ! Ha ha ! No seriously, I’d highly recommend it and this one gives you the perfect insight into Staci’s writing style !

Piece of Work was the perfect light romantic comedy that put a huge smile on my face after a long and hard day. I absolutely loved it and enjoyed each and every word!!! But that's not a surprise considering that it was written by the amazingly talented Staci Hart who I totally adore. She has the ability to make me lose myself in her stories and connect with her characters like they are my best friends. Court and Rin were no exception to that. I loved these two with all my heart. They made me swoon hard and had the most amazing chemistry ever!

When art student Rin Van de Meer scores a prestigious internship at the MET in New York, she never expected to face so many challenges. Her boss, Dr. Court Lyons, is not impressed by her shyness and baggy clothes and considers her unworthy of the position. Rin is taken aback at the beginning but decides to not let the arrogant sexy bastard scare her away. After all she is a very smart young woman that earned the internship through great grades and hard work.  Her biggest goal is to impress him with her knowledge of Renaissance art in which she succeeds. But it's not until she changes her clothing style and starts to put on make-up that Dr. Lyons really takes notice of her. Things will get very hot and sexy at the museum because the curator and his intern won't be able to keep their hands off each other. At first they will keep their affair a secret. But once they start having deep feelings for each other, things will get more complicated...

Court Lyons was the sexy, arrogant alpha hero we all dream and fantasize about. I loved his cocky side as much as his hidden vulnerable one. He is a guy that is used to being in charge and likes to command people around him. But that's part of his job as the curator of the European Paintings departement of the MET in New York. The only person that was able to unravel him was Rin. She ignited a passion and obsession inside him like no one else. Once he truly saw her he couldn't stay away. Her intelligence and beauty took his breath away as much as the fact that she truly and deeply cared about him and not his money or position. I loved how they not only physically craved each other but intellectually too. After all it was their mutual love for art that made them connect despite their different personalities. Court was suspicious of people and their intentions all the time after being deeply hurt before. Luckily sweet and considerate Rin will convince him of her honest intentions and make him understand that he is the only thing she wants.

As much as I loved Rin and Court together, I loved her with her room mates too. These girls were a fierce and loving bunch that made me laugh so much. I wanted to be a part of their tribe and join the Red Lipstick Coalition asap. I hope that the girls are going to get their own books too!

If you are looking for a hot and addictive summer read, that will help you to escape for a couple of hours and relax, then this book is for you. Great job Staci Hart!

Reviewed in Australia on April 27, 2019
So I love Staci's books, but I'd have to say that this one wasn't my fave. That's ok though, cause the book was still a great rom-com for sure!! I still loved the storyline, and premise of the story, and what was trying to be conveyed through the pages.
Rin meets Court while she's at her internship at the MET. Yes, at that MET! Court is the bosses son, and he runs the department that Rin is doing her internship in. Along with Bianca.
Rin is not your typical Korean girl. She's super tall, light skin, and dark hair. She gets stares wherever she goes. She doesn't like the attention, so that's why she wears clothes that don't make her stand out any more than what she does.
She meets Court after her first run in with Bianca, who I don't like AT ALL!
Court can't stop making eyes at Rin, and soon things start to heat up. Like really heat up right in front of Jesus!! Jesus has seen it all!
One thing leads to another and Rin and Court are keeping what they have going on pretty quiet and away from the prying eyes and ears of Courts dad and Bianca. Bianca and Court were supposed to go Florence to try to secure David for the MET, but instead Rin has to go! By this point she wants NOTHING to do with Court, but court talks her around to see how things will go for them in Italy and then figure it out from there.
When they get back home, things really start to fall apart for them, and oh man! I wish I could have reached through the pages and slapped Court so many times, and even some times strangle the guy!
I won't ruin it with spoilers for those that haven't read it, but it's a funny rom-com, with some twists and turns, and some hatin' on Court LOL!
I did think this book started out just a little slow, with the backstory, but once it got going in like chapter 2 it was great. I did feel as though Courts side of the story was a bit blah and boring, when it was his chapter, but maybe it was just me. I really enjoyed Rin's side of the story, and her friends cracked me up! I can't wait to read about them. I love the empowerment they give Rin and the confidence they give her!

My fave quotes from the book
    1. "I love you Rin. Now, you get out there and slay your day like the boss bitch you are." - I love her friends!!!
    2. I didn't think I wanted to hide anymore. I wanted to be seen. - BE SEEN RIN! BE SEEN!
    3. "He will never touch you." I said against her lips. Because you're mine. - Court being super sweet.....in his head! I wish he would have told her out loud.
    4. And I had a new plan: enjoy every single moment of Rin that I could while I could. - Oh Court, don't be a douche!
    6. "The man is a red flag with legs." "Long, tree-trunk legs." "Don't remind me." - Rin and her friends knows what's up with Court and his body!
    7. "Now kiss me in front of Jesus, Dr. Lyons, before I die." - Back to where it all started!
