Piece of Work: An Enemies to Lovers Office Romance (Red Lipstick Coalition Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.1 out of 5 stars 3,598 ratings

My summer internship at the Met is going to be hot, and the temperature has nothing to do with it.

Because marble isn’t the only thing that’s hard at this museum.

My cocky boss’ body is as chiseled as Adonis. His lips as sculpted as David. And his ego is the size of the Guggenheim.

You know the type—wolfish smile and the gravity of a black hole. The kind of man who sucks all the air from the room the second he enters it. He thinks this internship was wasted on me, and he doesn’t hesitate to let me know.

But he’s wrong, and I’m going to prove it to him. If I can stay away from his devilish lips, that is. Lips that cut me down and kiss me in the same breath, leaving me certain he’s on a mission to ruin my life.

And maybe my heart, too.

I was the kid who stayed inside to read.

As a four-eyed nerd with a bad perm, I was no one’s dodgeball pick, but I had a lot of friends. Frodo and Bilbo, for instance. Kristy, Stacey, Claudia and the gang (iykyk). Once, in the third grade, I wrote a teen murder mystery inspired by Christopher Pike. On solving my mystery in twelve pages, I decided I was a terrible writer and should never, ever do that again.

Fortunately, I didn’t take my own advice.

I write romance for that feeling you get at the end, like you’re standing on top of a mountain with a backpack full of hundred dollar bills. I write romcoms because is there anything better than banter and grand gestures? I write because I love to create and I love words. I love books, and I love stretching my imagination. I love love, and if you do too, bring your coffee and have a seat. I think we’re gonna be friends.

Holy MOLY. Staci Hart did it again. Here's a preview of Piece of Work: a powerful man and beautiful woman; classic art and kisses in front of Jesus; Italian sundresses and candid selfies; swoon-worthy love scenes and TONS of self-growth. If that sounds appealing to you (which, uh, DUH — of course it does!) then keep on reading. Nobody does rom-com/dram (romantic comedy/drama for those not acronymic-ally inclined) like this lady, I'm telling y'all. Just when I think she's hit the peak of an amazing romance, she knocks it clear out of the park with yet another story that captivates your heart and soul. Piece of Work was no deviation from this pattern, so if you don't mind, I'd like to geek out with you right now. Of course, we have to start with the characters. I LOVED these two, especially together. Rin is a great heroine who learns to grow into her own skin and realize her own badass-ery. She is a Dutch-Korean girl, so she is super unique looking (in the BEST way... seriously, check out Staci's Pinterest inspo board), and has to learn to embrace her height and her confidence. The only critique I had was that I felt the transition was really quick, and maybe a tad unrealistic. However, in hindsight, I think this way ended up being better, because it leaves more room for the really complicated plot: Rin & Court. I want to eat an Oatmeal Cream Pie now, because those are her favorite snack. I loved watching her overcome her doubts, learn to become as self-assured and confident as she needs to be to keep up with Court. Speaking of Court…. Court, Court, Court. This man is DANGEROUS. Do you SEE that banner/cover? *fans self* On a real note, the journey for him to let go of his past experiences and memories is looooooong and there were definitely certain parts where I wanted to punch him in his chiseled face! In his own twisted way, for much of the book, he thinks he’s doing a favor for Rin. I could never hate him for it, though, because I could see his potential as a kind, caring lover from the first moment we pop into his head; he just had to grow enough and learn to relinquish his iron-grip control on every facet of his life before he could step into that position. He’s hot, charming, and smart as hell. Sign. Me. Up. The moments in the book where he and Rin geek out over Renaissance art are some of the best in the novel — it shows how well matched they are. The writing was skillful and witty (as always) — I found myself highlighting lots of beautiful, well-worded phrases and just as many laugh-out-loud moments, too. Set in New York City like all of Hart's other novels, PoW is a sexy, sophisticated blend of art and culture. I loved the setting of the Met — it's one of my favorite places to visit in all of the Big Apple -- and I loved the detailed and accurate art mentions. It's clear Staci did her research. And Italy. I now have a lethal dose of Italian wanderlust because of this book. Gelato and sundresses and *hot lunch* and Michaelangelo’s David and GAH! It was simply magical. Also, it was DUAL POV!!!! I love when a romance is from both perspectives, as it truly rounds out the story and makes it so much more REAL. Especially here, being inside of Court’s head and seeing why he does the things he does makes readers fall for him that much more quickly. With Rin, her perspective is needed to see the transition from wallflower to “boss bitch,” and it makes her a lot more relatable to many of the readers of this book. Here are some of my favorite quotes from the novel: "That is feminism — the right to live your life however the hell you want regardless of whether or not you have a vagina.” “I’d finger you in front of Jesus any day of the week." And my personal favorite... “She was sunshine and rain on scorched earth, clean and fresh and honest, and as the first shoots of grass rose from the ash, I found myself kneeling in the dirt, cupping my hands to protect it, willing it to grow.” In case you haven’t figured it out yet: READ THIS FREAKING BOOK! t’s witty and smart, creative and romantic, and just all around an amazing read. Do yourself a favor and pick this bad boy up as soon as it drops. ;)

Aaaaaaaaaaand that’s why I love Staci Hart’s books! Oh…my…GAH! This is what she does to me people and I looooove it so much. I’m a glutton for her punishment and I can’t fathom a time when I’ll ever get enough of her books. (Spoiler alert – that will be never!) I don’t even know where to begin with all the amazingness that was Piece of Work - it was angsty and sexy and perfect with a surprise slice of taboo that I loved! It pulled me in right from the get go…Rin is endearing, sweet and adorable and Court is maddening infuriating but impossible not to love and the combination of the two of them stole my heart and I couldn’t stop loving them.

Hyo-rin Van de Meer…such a gentle, sweet, kind, smart girl. I loved how different and extraordinary she was, although in the beginning she kind of hid herself away. She’s an extremely unique blend…Korean and Dutch…she’s an exotic 6 foot Amazonian goddess but she practically melts into the background. To a certain degree, I got it…she’s more on the shy side and when you already stand out so much, sometimes it’s easier to do things that draw attention away from that…but I loved seeing her transform and come into her own. She blossomed throughout this book, I felt like PoW was just as much about Rin figuring out who she really wanted to be as it was about her relationship with Court, which was really awesome. It was empowering to see her make necessary changes that truly improved how she felt and not to impress anyone, but for her own self-confidence. It was a process but it did such amazing things for her. I loved her dedication to her education, pursuing her Ph.D, and her love of art…she’s very driven and passionate. I loved her obsession for oatmeal cream pies, that she could trip over air and her quirky personality.

‘My favorite parts of the day were chatting with him in the morning and saying goodbye in the afternoon. Don’t get me wrong. He was still cold and distant, dismissive and borderline rude, but when we talked about topics we both loved, the conversation was rousing. Refreshing. A meeting of minds, and his mind was as beautiful as the rest of him.
    Added bonus: the view.’

Dr. Court William Lyons…good sweet @#% hole loving stars I wanted to knee Court in the balls and climb him like a spider monkey – sometimes simultaneously. There is no way to sugar coat it…Court is a cold hearted jerk face. He does some stuff that makes you want to strangle him, shake him, slap him, scream at him – the list of things I wanted to do to him was endless…and he rightfully deserved my wrath. But there is a light at the end of the tunnel…@%# hole is not Court’s only mode – it’s his defense mechanism. Court’s history is not good…his dad’s kind of a prick and he’s been burned too many times to not have learned his lesson….so he did – he built a wall 50 miles high and 100 miles thick and nothing is going to penetrate his armor or get him hurt again. Ha! Jokes on him cause he didn’t see Rin coming!

‘With his hands on my body, with his lips against mine, with all the passion in his heartless chest, he poured himself into me, filled me up, seized me like I’d always been his. Like I’d been waiting for him all this time. And I rose to meet him with a familiarity I felt in my marrow.’

Rin and Court are a delicate balance…strong to delicate, light to dark, @%# hole to sweet heart – they should never make sense and yet, they work perfectly. Their differences complimented each other so well – like logically, it shouldn’t work but oh-em-gee…it’s the best thing ever. They’re incredibly unique and I loved that about them so much. I loved how their relationship progressed…it was so well tuned and flowed effortlessly, created magnificent tension. I loved the forbidden aspect of it - gah, give me a taboo romance all day, every day – and it’s funny cause I really wasn’t expecting that angle - cause I’m a ding-dong and it didn’t even occur to me – but as soon as it did I was like yaaaaaas! I loved Florence…every second of what happened in Florence was the best. I just truly loved their bond…it was genuine and real, they completely connected on every level and it was impossible not to fall head over heals for them.

‘The line between love and hate was as thin as people said, and I’d learned the intimate truth of it. Because, incomprehensibly, I wanted him, and I never wanted to see him again. I wanted to kiss him, and I wanted to kill him. I wanted him to apologize, and I never wanted to hear the sound of his voice as long as I lived.’

Staci Hart…my god what this woman does to me, it slays me in all the most amazing ways. I feel like there are approximately 72.3 billion reasons why I am a die hard Staci Hart reader and just not enough hours in the day to go over each and every reason in complete detail, but I’ll try and paraphrase as best I can. The authenticity in her characters always blows me away…they feel so genuine and real and I absolutely want to be a part of their lives and be their besties forever and ever. The way she weaves her stories…the flow and pace is so smooth, I’m not reading, I’m experiencing everything with these amazing characters and it translates brilliantly. And the pièce de ré·sis·tance – the emotions…they’re interwoven completely through every detail, it’s all a crucial part to how Staci brings the characters and stories to life. I feel deeply for every aspect of what is going on and that’s what keeps me turning the pages. I really have to applaud Staci for writing this book – I know she mentioned the research that she had to do having never been to Florence and it’s kind of funny because I was just in Florence 8 months ago, so it was really fun to get transported back and I could put my own experience on what she was writing.

‘Her face softened, but a glimmer of pain passed across her brow, shifted behind her eyes. “Court—”
“Just let me…let me say this,” I said, brushing her cheek with my knuckles, tucking her hair behind her ear, my fingertips tingling at the contact I’d been wishing for.
    She nodded once.
“You were right. You’ve done nothing to deserve the way I’ve treated you. You’ve done nothing to betray my trust, and I’ve done everything to betray yours. And I’m sorry, Rin. I couldn’t stay away from you when I should have. I broke a vow to myself and punished you for it. But every rule, every line, everything I know to be right or wrong is blurred when it comes to you.”’

Okay – I hate to say it but there was only one flaw in the book that caught my attention and let me state that I know we’re reading fiction but still, I need a certain level of believability but it’s fiction, but it’s not fantasy. So, here’s where my trip to Florence plays a part...because had I not just traveled there, I never would have caught this detail...and this fact does play a part of what's going on in the story line. Excuse me while my history nerd comes out and takes over - because I actually loved this fact about Florence and it’s history but I will say, honestly, unless you’ve been to Florence, I don’t know if it’s possible to easily find this information. The Medici family is the reason why Florence has all the art that it has, including the Statue of David. The last lineal descendant of the Medici family – Anna Maria Luisa de’ Medici, as one of her final acts before she died, created the Family Pact. Basically, it guaranteed that all the art and treasures the Medici family had curated over their entire reign would remain in Florence. The way all the tour guides we encountered stated it was what was created in Florence, would never leave Florence – it was a way for the Medici family to live on after they were all gone. Personally I loved that it was a woman that did that, because it was also her way of giving a middle finger to the patriarchy because “technically” she couldn’t own any of the art her family was responsible for because she was a woman (yay for oppressing women! #sarcasm)…so this was her way of making sure no one else (or no other man!) could own it either – it belong to the people of Florence who would carry on the love of Medici’s for all they had done for the city. Knowing that did take a little fun out of the fiction for me for some aspects but seriously, that was minor in comparison to everything else that I took from this book.

‘I drew in a ragged breath, the question on my mind, in my heart, the meaning double, a test and a desperate desire. “What do you want, Rin?”
Her eyes were wiped clean of fear or scrutiny, her face purged of uncertainty. Instead, it held the pure honesty of a woman with nothing to hide, and my heart lurched in my chest when she answered, “You. I only want you.”
    A step.
    A breath.
    A moment.
    And she was mine.’

I was a tiny bit nervous about the ending…because I really didn’t want it to be rushed and with everything that was going on, I was just concerned about what direction it might go in. My concerns were completely unnecessary because while Staci totally kept me on my toes, the ending was fantastic. I loved what she did with it, I loved what it did for Rin and Court, I loved basically every second of these two crazy kids and I couldn’t even feel bad about how much I loved it. There was so the opportunity to do drama for the sake of drama…and I was sooooo thankful it didn’t happen! And the epilogue…freaking loved! The best way to complete Court and Rin’s beautiful story and I don’t think I could have wished for more. I’m so happy that we're getting stories for Rin’s roommates – Val, Katherine & Amelia. I love their friendship, it was super awesome the way they all supported one another and especially with their little pact towards the end, I feel like they have endless amounts of awesome to offer and I’m dying to read it! Up next is Valentina in Player ...and I can't wait to see what Staci does with her story!

Rin was awarded an internship at The Met working with Dr. Lyons in the European Paintings department. Rin specializes in Renaissance art. She’s worried about the assignment at the museum because it’s not the same as going to classes where she can follow a syllabus.

Rin is a tall Korean woman who is insecure about her height. She wears frumpy clothes to hide her figure.

Dr. Lyon’s answers to his father who runs and controls the museum. He doesn’t see eye to eye with his father since he stole his last intern from him.

This is my first time reading a book written by Staci Hart. Piece of Work centers around working in a museum with artwork and sculptures of which I’m not interested in. Yet Staci Hart made it bearable to read. This is a romantic comedy in the work place between an intern and curator. It’s a mixed race relationship, yet Staci only mentions her race not focusing too much on her Korean background.

I loved the scenes where Rin’s friends boost her confidence by giving her advice. Rin’s transformation from an insecure woman into a bold confident woman was remarkable.

The story is told through the eyes of both Rin and Court. Instant feedback from both characters feelings is very rewarding in a book.

Rin is like a book cover except her book cover is a poor representation of what’s inside. Her book cover needs an update. The cover needs to match what’s she’s capable of doing. Her achievements and accolades are hidden behind a shabby cover. Her confidence was hidden within the pages of a book with a cover that did nothing to enhance or celebrate that image. With the help,of her friends her exterior matched her interior.

Emily Woo Zeller and Teddy Hamilton performed Piece of Work. I listened using the audible app which provided a high quality recording. I’m an eyes and ears person with a particular interest in owning both the audiobook and ebook. Both performances were excellent offering the listener a great experience.

“‘You are art. You are the woman men chisel from raw marble to stand timelessly in a sacred place. You are the woman they spend their lives painting over and over again, unable to perfect the bow of your lips or the light in your eyes. Those things haven’t changed from the time I met you. But you have, simply by believing.’”

Piece of Work is just so many things. It’s inspiring. It’s simply beautiful. It’s the kind of book you dive into head first, heart pounding, and butterflies fluttering, and come out feeling completely astounded. It’s quite simply put, otherworldly. Not to mention the female empowerment in this book is what made it THAT much more whole and I d*** sure felt empowered after devouring it.

Staci Hart can’t not write a heart breaking book in one way or another. Even the books that are EASILY a romantic comedy will have you feeling like your heart is slowly being chiseled away at, at some point in the novel. But one thing you can trust about a Hart read, is her 100% taking care of you and have you feeling irrevocably in love with romance as a whole and will have you remembering why you love it to begin with. Piece of Work is the epitome of that.

Piece of Work is romance, women empowerment, and a reminder all in one. So do yourself a favor. Go out and buy that statement piece; buy that bold as hell red lipstick or that charcoal eyeliner. Wear it with pride and dive head first into this book as easily and as willingly as I did. And come out feeling THAT much better about yourself than you did before. Remember why you choose romance. Because piece of Work did that for me and more.

Rin is beautiful, shy and awkward. Landing her dream internship. But what I adored about her was her sassy, no nonsense attitude, the confidence that grew and how she found herself at was and able to put Court in his place time and time again.

Court came across egotistical, arrogant and angry at the world. But as the curtains fall and you see behind the charade, he’s anything but. He is protective of his heart and finding his way back to love isn’t easy, it’s something he didn’t know he wanted and tries to stifle the feelings !

The push and pull between the characters and the chemistry they possess is just what is needed and it is played out perfectly !

The story crafted by Staci is a Rom Com and there were some great moments with the banter and dialogue between the character. The tale is sweet, fun and sexy to boot.

Totally worth a read especially if you are a Staci Hart fan, if you haven’t picked up a book by her before, firstly what are you doing ! Ha ha ! No seriously, I’d highly recommend it and this one gives you the perfect insight into Staci’s writing style !

Piece of Work was the perfect light romantic comedy that put a huge smile on my face after a long and hard day. I absolutely loved it and enjoyed each and every word!!! But that's not a surprise considering that it was written by the amazingly talented Staci Hart who I totally adore. She has the ability to make me lose myself in her stories and connect with her characters like they are my best friends. Court and Rin were no exception to that. I loved these two with all my heart. They made me swoon hard and had the most amazing chemistry ever!

When art student Rin Van de Meer scores a prestigious internship at the MET in New York, she never expected to face so many challenges. Her boss, Dr. Court Lyons, is not impressed by her shyness and baggy clothes and considers her unworthy of the position. Rin is taken aback at the beginning but decides to not let the arrogant sexy bastard scare her away. After all she is a very smart young woman that earned the internship through great grades and hard work.  Her biggest goal is to impress him with her knowledge of Renaissance art in which she succeeds. But it's not until she changes her clothing style and starts to put on make-up that Dr. Lyons really takes notice of her. Things will get very hot and sexy at the museum because the curator and his intern won't be able to keep their hands off each other. At first they will keep their affair a secret. But once they start having deep feelings for each other, things will get more complicated...

Court Lyons was the sexy, arrogant alpha hero we all dream and fantasize about. I loved his cocky side as much as his hidden vulnerable one. He is a guy that is used to being in charge and likes to command people around him. But that's part of his job as the curator of the European Paintings departement of the MET in New York. The only person that was able to unravel him was Rin. She ignited a passion and obsession inside him like no one else. Once he truly saw her he couldn't stay away. Her intelligence and beauty took his breath away as much as the fact that she truly and deeply cared about him and not his money or position. I loved how they not only physically craved each other but intellectually too. After all it was their mutual love for art that made them connect despite their different personalities. Court was suspicious of people and their intentions all the time after being deeply hurt before. Luckily sweet and considerate Rin will convince him of her honest intentions and make him understand that he is the only thing she wants.

As much as I loved Rin and Court together, I loved her with her room mates too. These girls were a fierce and loving bunch that made me laugh so much. I wanted to be a part of their tribe and join the Red Lipstick Coalition asap. I hope that the girls are going to get their own books too!

If you are looking for a hot and addictive summer read, that will help you to escape for a couple of hours and relax, then this book is for you. Great job Staci Hart!

So I love Staci's books, but I'd have to say that this one wasn't my fave. That's ok though, cause the book was still a great rom-com for sure!! I still loved the storyline, and premise of the story, and what was trying to be conveyed through the pages.
Rin meets Court while she's at her internship at the MET. Yes, at that MET! Court is the bosses son, and he runs the department that Rin is doing her internship in. Along with Bianca.
Rin is not your typical Korean girl. She's super tall, light skin, and dark hair. She gets stares wherever she goes. She doesn't like the attention, so that's why she wears clothes that don't make her stand out any more than what she does.
She meets Court after her first run in with Bianca, who I don't like AT ALL!
Court can't stop making eyes at Rin, and soon things start to heat up. Like really heat up right in front of Jesus!! Jesus has seen it all!
One thing leads to another and Rin and Court are keeping what they have going on pretty quiet and away from the prying eyes and ears of Courts dad and Bianca. Bianca and Court were supposed to go Florence to try to secure David for the MET, but instead Rin has to go! By this point she wants NOTHING to do with Court, but court talks her around to see how things will go for them in Italy and then figure it out from there.
When they get back home, things really start to fall apart for them, and oh man! I wish I could have reached through the pages and slapped Court so many times, and even some times strangle the guy!
I won't ruin it with spoilers for those that haven't read it, but it's a funny rom-com, with some twists and turns, and some hatin' on Court LOL!
I did think this book started out just a little slow, with the backstory, but once it got going in like chapter 2 it was great. I did feel as though Courts side of the story was a bit blah and boring, when it was his chapter, but maybe it was just me. I really enjoyed Rin's side of the story, and her friends cracked me up! I can't wait to read about them. I love the empowerment they give Rin and the confidence they give her!

My fave quotes from the book
    1. "I love you Rin. Now, you get out there and slay your day like the boss bitch you are." - I love her friends!!!
    2. I didn't think I wanted to hide anymore. I wanted to be seen. - BE SEEN RIN! BE SEEN!
    3. "He will never touch you." I said against her lips. Because you're mine. - Court being super sweet.....in his head! I wish he would have told her out loud.
    4. And I had a new plan: enjoy every single moment of Rin that I could while I could. - Oh Court, don't be a douche!
    6. "The man is a red flag with legs." "Long, tree-trunk legs." "Don't remind me." - Rin and her friends knows what's up with Court and his body!
    7. "Now kiss me in front of Jesus, Dr. Lyons, before I die." - Back to where it all started!
