Anne Brooke is a brilliantly luminous writer in a variety of genres and people should be reading her stuff. Something that is unique to Brooke's writing is her ability to interest me in things I would have thought I would dislike. This has happened on more than one occasion and has me seeking out everything she has published.

This novel really challenges me to categorize it because there is just so much packed into it. Conservative mother, a rebellious daughter who runs away to stay with her Uncle John who turns out to have a transvestite identity as a drag queen singer/comedienne club owner for gay folk. The kitchen is ruled by a knife-wielding German and brilliant chef who is passionate about mushrooms while wait-service is provided by the gorgeous and straight Philippe. There's Derek the gay bouncer and Malcolm the politician with a wife and family but having an affair with John. There is also Lisa, Angie's best friend and various business owners, each with some detail unique to themselves. Really enjoyed getting to know them.

The plot hinges on a family secret known only to Angie's mother and John and no one is telling Angie anything. Angie tries to find a job because her dream is to cater. But the only one she found was in a restaurant where she was expected to accept the male customers groping her, the waitress. Then she decides to ask John is she could have of his building which he doesn't use to open a cafe. He agrees, opening night comes and a paparazzo gets a photo of John and Malcolm in flagrante delicto, skips through the cafe boasting of it which causes Malcolm's to scream at the top of her voice. mayhem ensues, the police arrive, and the club is shut down. At the same time, Angie discovers her boyfriend cheating on her with her best friend. Angie flees and goes home.

There she has a really good long think and finally her mother reveals the family secret and Angie has to admit it explained a lot. Angie does some growing up and returns to London the right way, with maternal blessing.

A lot goes on in only 200 or so pages. It is jam packed, not a word wasted. The plot and the characters are equally well-developed and this is a great read.

Pacy, easy read which won't overtax your brain cells. Read this when you need to take a break from reality and relax. There are a few laugh out loud moments and the characterisation manages to be realistic despite improbable situation.
