No Place Like Place: Book One - The Talian Project Kindle Edition
She also hadn’t been told about the Talia, because no-one knew about them. They were several thousand years away in space and time, and no-one in Place would ever suspect their existence, but the gentle Talia were even more interested in Place than she was.
To Abby and Brad, Place was where they fell in love.
To most of the small community, it offered a retro, even primitive, lifestyle with astonishing benefits.
To the Talia, it was the site of the most important experiment in their history.
Unfortunately, to the Consortium, it was ripe for exploitation even if it was destroyed in the process. All that was needed was one man ambitious and ruthless enough to start the process and the planet was, ultimately, doomed. Unless the small and oddly-assorted community of settlers could stop him -
A light-hearted novel, first in a cozy SF trilogy, with engaging characters, an oddly-appealing way of life, and a strong storyline which will delight readers of the genre. .
There's steam, but it isn't steampunk. There's a Western feel to it, but it isn't a space western. I like both of those. I loved this - Reader review

Editorial Reviews
From the Author
In the Place books, those wanting four-dimensional time and a bit of high-tech sophistication will have to settle for the Talians. Something for everyone, albeit definitely niche.

About the author

Like every SF reader I have the sneaking feeling I was born too early and so many exciting things lie just over the horizon!
We do live in exciting times, enough to pique our imaginations, stretch them just that little further forward, dream ... my style is usally very much in the cozy category, even when far afield in space and time.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 8, 2015Lamprey has constructed an ingenious narrative structure for this novella. There are essentially two narratives running in near-parallel throughout the story. I say near-parallel because the story-thread focusing on the humans trying to make a living on a strange planet that is at once both supportive and dangerous to them is a complete story in its own right. The other thread , concerning a race called the Talians, makes it quite clear upfront that they are intensely concerned with the events in the first thread. Even, maybe especially, the events that didn't happen. Lamprey quite cleverly plays out these narratives in a straightforward, almost leisurely style, combining a satisfyingly sense of world-building in both threads, with solid characters and nicely arch dialogue. And this is only the first third of the complete story - much to look forward to.
