Playing for Keeps: A Small Town Romance (Hope Valley Book 10) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 1,969 ratings

When it came to the men in her life, Charlotte Belmont was cursed. She’d known losers, cheaters, abusers, and criminals, so it went without saying, she stopped trusting her judgment a long time ago. Then Dalton came into her life; a good, dependable man who made her heart race and her body hot. When she felt herself falling for him, she did the only thing she could think to protect them both . . . she ran like hell.

Dalton Prescott was a protector by nature, so when the woman he’d been tasked to keep safe was almost killed on his watch, he carried that guilt like a weight on his shoulders. What made matters worse was that before everything went south, Dalton had started to care for Charlotte in a way that had nothing to do with his job.

She’s determined to ignore their attraction and keep him at a distance, but he’s playing for keeps and has no intention of losing. However, when ghosts from the past start popping up, bringing with them a whole new threat, Dalton may be the only man who can keep her safe this time.

A small town romance between an alpha hero with a strong heroine makes Playing for Keeps an absolute must read! I love a story of self-discovery, of learning to let go and allow yourself to become vulnerable, and Jessica Prince nailed it with the latest installment of Hope Valley! - A.L. Jackson, NYT & USA Today bestselling author

I love me some Jessica Prince. Her books are like coming home and this series is a top favorite and reread of mine. Hope Valley and its residents have become family to me and watching them each fall one by one has been everything in the very best ways and has given the very best moments. -

Sweet, sexy, and emotionally fulfilling read...

Sweet, sexy, and emotionally fulfilling read...
Charlotte Belmont almost lost her life when she tried to protect someone else’s, and although she would do it again, not everyone in her life was, or ever will be, happy with her decision… Dalton Prescott has made his interest in Charlie very clear, but getting her to open up and trust him feels like a losing game, every time he attempts it… ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Playing for Keeps was a sweet, sexy, and emotionally fulfilling read in the incredible Hope Valley series. Charlotte and Dalton’s love story was all about redemption and giving yourself the life you deserve… while accepting the love of someone who deserves you right back… Charlotte feels like her life has been tainted with one bad decision after another, with her last one being so bad that it put her in the hospital with a gunshot wound. And while she is used to finding a way to stand back up and pick up the pieces of her life, Charlie vows that this time will be different, and she is swearing off men to prove it… Dalton blames himself for Charlie’s injury, and questions the choices she made that lead up to it, namely her slipping his protective watch to run to a certified madman. And while the answers he needs are anything but forthcoming, Dalton refuses to let Charlie slip through his fingers, ever again… I really enjoyed this book! Charlie and Dalton’s story had just enough angst and sexiness to keep the pages turning, while the emotional development paved the way for a healthy, lasting relationship that they both undoubtably deserved. I also adored the friendships in this book, and Dalton’s family was such an incredible gift to the previous and painfully solitary life of Charlie. This was another great read in the entertaining Hope Valley series! I love every single character in which we have been introduced to so far, and Charlie and Dalton are no exception! And while I am still savoring this latest book in the series… I am beyond excited to see what will come next in Hope Valley!! I received a complimentary copy of this book for my honest and unbiased review.

When you feel like you’re cursed. When nothing but bad seems to surround your life? How do you look at good things? Probably like they will blow up in your face like everything else. Well, that’s how Charlie seems to see it. This poor girl has been put through the wringer but thankfully some good has been fighting through her erected walls. Friends have come in and a huge handsome man. Slowly everyone is starting to break in and break down those walls of hers but she is keeping secrets. Secrets from her past and the whole time getting through this book all I wanted to know was when she would crack. This book was such a good read. Looking forward to the next book for sure!

I felt like this book was a little different. I had already read a spin off from these characters so the suspense and mystery were lacking for me. It seemed like the book focused more on the secrets Charlotte was keeping than anything else, and there was a lot of lead up to the big reveal, which fell a little flat for me. Maybe it was because I already knew the secrets and the outcome, but I felt like this was more of a happy for now than a happily ever after. It also seemed like there were things left open at the end.

I loved both main characters, and the book did a great job of leading into 3 other series, 2 of which I’ve read. This universe is huge and very interconnected so I’m glad I took the time to go back to the beginning. Charlotte and Dalton were a little more angsty than the previous couples but I enjoyed their relationship development. I liked that Jessica didn’t go back to the beginning when Dalton was tasked to protect Charlotte, against her will. I liked that it started 6 months after.

This was an enjoyable book. It was mysterious and suspenseful and gave some major hints about other couples. I loved Dalton’s determination to break down Charlotte’s walls. And as much as it killed me, I loved that it took some effort for Charlotte to let Dalton in. There were a lot of side stories and subplots in this book, but it just made me devour it that much faster.

Where do I start? I have a real soft spot for heroes or heroines who believe they are too damaged to deserve a happily ever after and that is Charlotte to a “t”. She truly believed she wasn’t a good person, despite us knowing what she did to help bring down Malachi Black in previous books. Dalton is desperately trying to get her to admit that not only are they perfect for each other but that she IS a good person. The best, really. Who else drinks lemonade made with salt instead of sugar just to pacify an elderly neighbor? Which brings me to my next point - I can without a doubt say Jessica Prince writes some of the best secondary characters in romance. Ms. Weatherby is the BEST and I think her monologue at the end of chapter 24 is beautiful. You’ll know exactly what I’m referring to!

Watching Charlotte and Dalton navigate her insecurities and even some of his is absolutely breathtaking. Add in seeing some of my favorite people in Hope Valley and this book is quite simply the next amazing story in the Hope Valley series. I don’t hesitate to one click when Jessica Prince releases a book and this book proves that is always a good decision! The books should be read in order in my opinion, but can certainly be read as standalones. They are 100% fabulous either way! And not to give too much away, but holy MOLY – that twist at the end? Way to make sure we’re all on the edge of our seat waiting (impatiently) for THAT story! I can’t wait!!!

This is book 10 in the Hope Valley series. This is Dalton and Charlottes story. We met Charlotte or Charlie as many call her in the previous book as she was Micah’s informant Charlotte was like a little sister to Micah who ended up being assaulted and tortured. Dalton who is part of the Omega private investigator team was assigned to protect her but she snuck out on him. From the beginning Dalton was smitten with Charlotte but she didn’t or refused to see it because she felt trapped and was angry she was being watched or babysat as far as she was concerned! . She refused to see it was being done for her own good so to say that their relationship got off on a hate to love you foot is an understatement! Dalton knows what he wants but Charlotte is convinced she is a bad person because of her past. A past that she buries inside because she refuses to let anyone in for fear they will get hurt. It takes Dalton’s perseverance for her to see that she might be worth it. Then in true author fashion the other shoe drops and she is reminded again why she does what she does. A lot of nasty things are said will there be a HEA will they be able to get past the words that were spoken and back to each other. Guess you will have to read to find out! This is a stand alone as are all the other books on the series but I strongly suggest you start at the beginning so you understand all the characters who pop in and out of every book!

I am a huge no fan and I love the Hope Valley series, but this book fizzled for me in a big way. It was serious effort to get to the 30% mark and I found myself skimming A LOT and hoping to find a way to engage with the characters. It didn't really happen and the story ended up feeling like more of a bridge from the last to the next.

Jessica Prince has had me hook, line, and sinker from the beginning with the Hope Valley family, and I am so glad that we are back in Hope Valley, with Charlotte and Dalton.  Charlotte has been through so much as we saw in Love to Hate You, which was Micah’s story. Dalton feels guilty for what happened to Charlotte. These two have had feeling for each other but would not admit it as Charlotte’s past keeps her from loving and getting too close to anyone. These two are both stubborn but with the right intervention from their friends, they finally come together and when they do, sparks fly. Their chemistry is off the charts. If anyone deserves happiness, these two do, and their family and friends will be there to help them realize that they are meant to be. I am so anxious now to find out what happened to Charlie’s sister, and can’t wait for the next book in this series.

Another great book in this series. Loved Dalton - Micah still holds the number one spot if favourite male leads! Charlotte, hmm well up until about 88% I just couldn’t take to her, she was irritating and very childish, I know she was younger than a lot of the other females in this series, and you could tell. Eventually she grew on me - when she opened her eyes and grew up, so they have my seal of approval 😂😂 all that aside, I still loved the story.

Trent intrigues me, so I’m hoping he has a story too! There have been so many side characters throughout the series, and even if they don’t get their own full books, a little collection of short stories seeing them getting HEA’s would be great, like for instance Jolie - Dalton’s sister 🙏

Charlottes life had been a rocky one from the get go.
When her knight in shining armour saves her from a terrible situation she often wonders if the connect she felt was real.
She keeps her distance from Dalton or so she tries. Dalton doesn’t give up without a fight making his presence in her life known. Showing up at work & waiting to make sure she’s save

Charlotte began to let him in & the unthinkable happens. Will this new challenge rip them apart or bring them back together

What an incredible love story ❤️ Become captivated by Charlottes & Daltons romance.. will it be happily ever after
