At not-quite forty, Bert's going to be dining alone now that his son will be leaving for college soon.
His restaurant's wine rep has a few ideas on how Bert might sate all of his appetites.
He hasn't been buying what Drennan has been selling, but she’s only in Memphis for a few months before moving back home to California.

Plus One is a steamy standalone novel and connects with Mae Wood's other contemporary romances including This Time Is Different, Risking Ruin, and Crush .

About the author

Professional sassypants and novelist, Mae Wood has been a bookworm her entire life.
She loves cheeses, complicated crafts that she'll start but never complete, and puns.
A while ago Mae decided that she needed to give up the fear that she couldn't write "great literature" and write what she wants to read.
And she wants romance. And laughter. And real life.
She wants heroines who are brave. Brave enough to be themselves and brave enough to fall in love. She wants men who are strong and kind.
Mae is married, and has two darling children and an old dog who naps at her feet while she writes.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 6, 2017Let me just start off by saying that if you haven't read Mae Wood yet, you need to start now. Ok, glad I got that off my chest. Now, on to Plus One.
There are so many elements in Plus One that hit all of my sweet spots—first, Bert. Bert is tatted, sweet, but alpha, smart, poetic, loyal and playful. He's also 39 and the single {divorced} father of an 18-year old son. I can't even begin to tell you how much I loved what that relationship brought to the story. The realness, maturity and depth it brought to his character was phenomenal, but it was also so nice to read about a man that wasn't entirely caught up in himself. It humanized him in a way I don't often find in romance and made me long for more of that in the books I read. Then, Drennan. She's 26, which could cause an eye roll, but if it did, that would very quickly disappear. She's mature and wise and has had to grow up a bit before her time. But she's also playful and sexy and she's got a great sense of female strength—yes, she's totally enamored with Bert {who wouldn't be}, but she's no shrinking violet and she more than holds her own with a man 13 years her senior.
Bert is a chef-owner at Pig & Barley and Drennan is his wine rep. Which brings us to my next favorite thing about Plus One, besides this amazing couple—the foodie world. I'm, admittedly, completely caught up in the foodie scene here in Chicago {and elsewhere in my travels} and can unequivocally state that Mae knows her food. And wine. And beer. And, and, and. It was such a joy to envision their different excursions and culinary experiences and it just added a whole new level that I utterly enjoyed throughout.
Drennan is in Memphis short-term before heading back to California, where she is running her family's winery with her cousin, and Bert is firmly based in Memphis with the restaurant, his family and friends. They start to date casually while she's still local, but you can clearly see the dilemma headed our way.
Mae is a passionate, intelligent writer and that comes across throughout her work in spades. If you want to jump in, feel free to start with Plus One. It is the third book in the Pig & Barley series, but it is truly a standalone. You'll meet Trip + Marisa in Plus One, but then do yourself a favor and go back and read their story in the first two books in the series, Risking Ruin and Borrowing Trouble. I'd say start with those two first, but I loved Plus One so much, and am head over heels for Bert + Drennan, you really need to jump in on this now!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 13, 2020This was my first book to read by Mae Wood and I got by a special offer for free. It was a bit rambling, but I did overall enjoy it. I liked the characters, Bert & Drennan. They were great together even with the age difference between them. Their chemistry was so sexy and they were fun to read about as well. Bert ran a restaurant in Memphis and Drennan was a rep for a wine distribution company. That's how they met.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 6, 2017This is maybe my first book by Mae Wood, when Kate Canterbary recommends I listen, so had to check this one out. Suffice to say she was right, indubitably. While this is part of series, I was told it can be read as standalone and it does. The blurb had pique my curiosity and single dad bartender sold. Right away that writing style grabbed my attention, it was smooth and crisp with notes of humor. The characters are complex, dialogue is layered but straightforward.
We get introduced to the present Bert who had a tough relationship with his ex who he now has a grown up son with. Drennan who had a good background with wine. Drennan is smart, classy and confident heroine, a good balance. A wine rep for the restaurant of our hero Bert, Pig & Barley, she has had her eye on our hottie bartender for a while now, well he sounds quite lickable so of course. While there's that pretty big age difference factor for Bert, a little casual sexy time with the also eye catching Drennan can't be helped. She's in town for a while anyway.
Oh Bert, one good dad but lately feeling the empty nester can't pass up the lady who he also had his eye on. Accept he was hesitant for his own reasons. I like his passion for his restaurant, food and bike co-op; my favorite things. I like that he knows his stuff, well versed in the classics, an athletic guy always a plus for me. Also a devoted dad even if their circumstances weren't ideal, strong and kind. All in all total swoon. Suddenly from this intense chemistry, a budding friendship forms based on mutual likes and love of food. I like that they just organically transitioned and even when it changed to more.
While these two are not so serious in their relationships before it's when they least expect it their missing half comes along. Oh and it's just wonderful. Sigh. Bert maybe at the point in his life where lots change is happening and Drennan is one of those but she adds color and gives him something new to look forward to. His relationship with his ex is not the best so having a best friend in her is something special. I loved their little moments.
This book really ppealed to me for many reasons aside from Bert and Drennan of course, the food and beverage industry setting, the extensive knowledge of the terms used ( descriptions of food, wine and beer). The foodie in me is happy with restaurants, food items whatnot. Mae Wood's words are articulate and captured the moments well. I really need to go back to the other two books now based on this. Truly, terrific all around.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 5, 2017I did things all backward and read This Time Is Different first. It was a few months before I could get back to Bert, and boy was he worth the wait. What an amazing Hero. I loved everything about Bert. His intelligence, his humor, his earnestness, his work ethic, his loyalty, and last but not least, his sweetness. Because make no mistake about it, this muscled tattooed tri-athlete is sweet beyond comprehension.
It was fascinating to learn about Drennan after only hearing about her through Grady’s (Bert’s son) musings to his mother Amy in This Time Is Different. She is so much more than I anticipated. I am a sucker for a strong heroine, and Drennan has the market cornered with her smarts and perseverance.
I loved watching Bert and Drennan fall in love, slowly; savoring each other as if they had all the time in the world. And it was heavenly reading about the wine and the food and the places; that whole culture was just so lovely. I loved this book so much; I didn’t want it to end.

5.0 out of 5 stars The story of the ‘Lickable Man’ and his ‘Wine Girl’ is an absolute treat!
I am reviewing PLUS ONE after a reread. I never reviewed it the first time around because [insert reason no one really cares about here] and since I love the book and have reread it, it’s time I do so.
My Mae Wood journey began with THIS TIME IS DIFFERENT, so I read the books in reverse order of publication. There are several significant cross-overs but the books stand on their own, so feel free to just dive in!
I love books that feature food and drink, and it’s a bonus that they feature heavily in this book. Yet what makes this a fantastic read are our diverse protagonists. Bert, a father and husband at a young age, finds his several-years-divorced self coming to grips with the knowledge his son is soon heading off to college and for the first time in decades, Bert Forsythe will be on his own and free. Drennan McCutcheon is temporarily working as a wine sales representative. She is spreading her wings and learning new skills before heading home to California to take up the mantle of co-owner of a vineyard. This was always the plan, but a family tragedy means that this needs to happen sooner than anyone wanted or anticipated. Individually, they both have interesting lives and backgrounds. I enjoyed the way Wood gave us ample internal dialogue to let us really get to know both Bert and Drennan.
Together, Bert, 39, and Drennan, 26, are marvelous. They have similar interests, the physical attraction between them is scorching, and they both agree theirs is a short term term relationship. Well, we all know how that’s going to go down in a romance novel, don’t we? I loved the way they never took their time together for granted, I sighed with delight at their happiness, I was sad and frustrated for them when life’s commitments got in their way, and I cheered when they worked to join their two lives.
This ‘Lickable Man’ and his ‘Wine Girl’ are people I wish I knew in real life. They and their story are an absolute treat! Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars 5 ‘Anything can happen if you let it’ stars!
Okay, let’s get the boring stuff out of the way. Yes, Plus One is part of a series. Yes, it can be read as a standalone – it’s what I did. Still with me?
*rubs hands*
Now for the good stuff.
Goodbye, ovaries. Hello, Bert Forsythe! Le sigh…
Life is good for thirty-nine-year-old restaurateur Bert. It may not have turned out how he expected, but he regrets nothing. Following his divorce, he has followed a tried and tested recipe for ‘dating’, which has suited his commitment-phobe ways to a T. The ladies he’s dated, not so much *snorts*
Wine-rep Drennan McCutcheon is not all she appears to be. With her time in Memphis limited, and a burning attraction impossible to deny, maybe these two can find some inventive ways to pass the time *coughs*
The sexual tension and chemistry for these two was off the charts! One word: sizzling. If you can’t stand the heat, get out of the kitchen – wowzer!
I loved every morsel of this story. It’s more than an age gap love story. It’s about how life can throw us curveballs, and how we deal with them can make or break us. We may end up down a path we never envisioned, but it can be the making of us.
“Life isn’t meant to be rendered into long strings of syllables found only in thesauruses. Life is something to revel in. To live in. To savor.”
What starts as some fun quickly escalates as those pesky things called feelings become involved. Will they admit this is something more? If they do, how can they make it work with their lives and responsibilities being in different states?
If you’re like me, you’ll need to put up your DND sign as you devour this book to find out the outcome. I found myself holding my breath with trepidation for the last few chapters and kept my fingers crossed.
Some of my favourite moments in the story were the conversations between Bert, and his soon-to-be-off-to-college son, Grady. Awkward! And, don’t even get me started on the convos between Drennan and her cousin, McKenzie. I was shouting TMI, never mind poor Drennan.
Yeah, so as you can guess, I can’t recommend this book enough. I’m off to add the first two books in the series to my TBR list. While I’m doing that, you are going to one-click this one *winks*

5.0 out of 5 stars A 5 Star Experience
I devoured Plus One by Mae Wood. I ate it up, as it has so much honesty and emotion. People living with decisions they've made or life has made for them and turning those experiences into what works for them, becoming more than they ever expected of themselves. People interacting with friends and family, sharing the highs and lows; learning from each other; loving through it all. People circling one another, as the air is alive with electricity; turning that electricity into forever. Thank you, Mae Wood, for such a beautifully written book. Through your words, the scenes come alive, the characters spring off the page and live in my mind. Beyond a doubt, a truly great read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good!
This is a story of two people who wanted to just have a quick fling, but ended up getting more than they had originally intended to get.
Bert seemed a bit immature to me (esp with how he likes to change relationships every couple of months, & how he breaks up with someone mere minutes before going after someone else). However, he grew on me over time...
I did like the word play at times, like when Drennen opened a bottle, imitating something else that is sometimes done in the bedroom... Pretty funny! Innuendos are regularly included, always quite funny, like “I’m great at maneuvering large objects into tight spots...”
