4.2 out of 5 stars 7,503 ratings

Baking. It can get a guy killed.

‘When Steve Higgs writes, he hits it out of the park. I find myself laughing out loud and often.’
** Complete Series. Read every book (the dog doesn't die) **

When a retired detective takes a culinary tour of the British Isles, he hopes to find tasty treats and delicious bakes …

… what he gets is a clue to a crime in the ingredients for his pork pie.

His dog, Rex Harrison, an ex-police dog fired for having a bad attitude, cannot understand why the humans are struggling to solve the mystery. He can already smell the answer – it’s right before their noses.

He’ll pitch in to help his human and the shop owner’s teenage daughter as the trio set out to save the shop from closure. Is the rival pork pie shop across the street to blame? Or is there something far more sinister going on?

One thing is for sure, what started out as a bit of fun, is getting deadlier by the hour, and they’d better work out what the dog knows soon or it could be curtains for them all.

'This series has it all; everything I want in a story and series ... humour, suspense, and colourful characters. It’s one of my top all-time favourite series.’

This series of books contain no cussing and no graphic descriptions of violence or bedroom activities.

Review

"This is the first book that I have read by this author. I have to admit that I actually laughed out loud in parts, too! A good murder mystery with a touch of comedy. What could be better than that. Will be checking out more of his books!"

"These books are priceless! I laughed until I cried barely a dozen pages in and the laughs kept coming."

"Steve Higgs is one heck of a writer. I've read them all. And what I would recommend is the writer. Anything he writes you gotta read it. I have had such a good time with these books and thank you so much. I have thoroughly enjoyed it."

About the Author

When Steve Higgs wrote his debut novel, Paranormal Nonsense, he was a Captain in the British Army. He would love to pretend that he had one of those careers that has to be redacted and in general denied by the government and that he has had to change his name and continually move about because he is still on the watch list in several countries. In truth though, he started out as a mechanic. Not like Jason Statham, sneaking about as a contract killer, more like one of those greasy gits that charge you a fortune and keep your car for a week when all you went in for was a squeaky door hinge. At school, he was mostly disinterested in every subject except creative writing, for which, at age ten, he won his first award. However, calling it his first award suggests that there have been more, which there have not. Accolades may come but, in the meantime, he is having a ball writing mystery stories and crime thrillers and claims to have more than a hundred books forming an unruly queue in his head as they clamour to get out. Now retired from the military, he lives in the southeast corner of England with a trio of lazy sausage dogs. Surrounded by rolling hills, brooding castles, and vineyards, he doubts he will ever leave, the beer is just too good.

A Good Mystery Story With A Lot Of Humor Throughout
Years ago when I was driving long distance I used to get a number of detective, police procedurals, and Lilian Braun’s The Cat Who series books on CDs from the library to pass the time with while traveling. I started looking for books similar to The Cat Who series after Lilian Braun passed away, and Pork Pie Pandemonium by Steve Higgs, book one in the Albert Smith Culinary Capers, involves a retired detective who travels Britain by rail with his German shepherd ex-police dog Rex Harrison (fired for “having a bad attitude”) in search of entertaining culinary related adventures, that always end up with a murder they need to solve, often causing consternation to local chief constables and detectives. I regularly read a lot of memoirs, acclaimed literary fiction, highly rated thrillers and mysteries, but I also need books that are fun to read, and this one turned out to have a good mystery story with a lot of humor sprinkled throughout the book, often involving the dog, so it was enjoyable. I’m not sure it quite rises to the level of The Cat Who series, but still entertaining, and you learn about different areas of Britain, and the foods popular in those locations. This was one humorous passage involving dog Rex: “Rex glared at his human. ‘I am not talking to you and I am not helping with your silly investigation. Solve it by yourself, you ungrateful noseless human.’ Feeling that wasn’t enough, he vowed to sleep under the bed tonight and fart as much as he could.” In the humor vein there are also two contributing characters, Malcolm and Mikey, who are part of the criminal enterprise involving the initial murder. As ne’er do well relatives of the guy at the top, they get foisted off on his underlings, as they are not the sharpest tools in the shed, which makes for amusing banter, ie an instance when they are discussing the need to be unobtrusive when the boss has ordered them to follow someone, “‘Nonsense,’ argued Malcolm. ‘My disguise makes me invisible. I just look like a man reading a magazine. Whereas you look like a stalker.’ Mikey shook his head. ‘You’ve walked into three trees, trodden in dog poop and fallen over two broken paving slabs. Not only that, you’re holding a copy of Woman’s World. You look like an idiot.’ ‘And you’re wearing dark sunglasses, a stupid hat, and you’ve got your collar turned up to hide as much of your ugly mug as possible.” These two are the bane of ruthless local crime operator Brenda, who used to be a self employed criminal mastermind, but encroached on the big guy’s territory and now works for him, as it was preferable to “option A” which likely involved a painful death. Book one was good enough that I’ll continue on with book two in this 15 volume series of stand alone books: Bakewell Tart Bludgeoning, Albert Smith's Culinary Capers Recipe 2, described in the book blurb as “On a culinary tour of the British Isles, retired Detective Superintendent Albert Smith and snarky former police dog Rex Harrison find something quite unexpected waiting for them at their B&B...it’s the almost-dead body of their landlady.”

This series has an interesting premise, but about a third of the way through the first book, I could really see that the editor/proofreader was not doing their job, if indeed there was one. Incoherent sentences and weird punctuation make the book seem amateurish. I hope this problem was remedied in the subsequent books, because the series has a lot of potential in spite of some clunky dialogue (especially by the dog).

Pork Pie Pandemonium is a mystery novel and the first of the Albert Smith’s Culinary Capers series. The story follows Albert Smith, a retired detective living in England, as he takes a culinary tour around the country. His vacation is almost immediately interrupted by an incident in a pork pie cooking class he is attending. Despite the warnings of local police, Albert decides to investigate the incident himself, along with the help of his service dog, Rex Harrison, and the pie shop owner’s teenage daughter, Donna. Together, they follow the clues to solve the mystery and save the shop, all the while getting into more and more trouble.

Pork Pie Pandemonium is a fun mystery set in modern day England. Albert Smith is an interesting character. He is friendly, but can also be grumpy and stubborn, insisting on solving the mystery. Donna is eager to solve the caper as well, driven and desperate to save her mother’s pie shop. The story even takes us inside of Rex’s head and hearing the dog’s thoughts on the matter is quite amusing.

Overall, Pork Pie Pandemonium is a fun story. The circumstances surrounding the incident in the pie shop are mysterious and more dangerous than initially believed. Rex is quite a character himself, often providing some comedy with his antics, but never to the detriment of the story. Mystery fans and dog lovers will be sure to enjoy this book and will be looking forward to reading the rest of the series.

I'm not even half way through the first book of the series and I already know I'm going to get every single one. The main characters, Albert and his sidekick Rex, are loveable and I want to get to know them more. The story is believable, interesting, and the mystery of the "lost item" is carrying me along at the perfect pace. Albert's new friend Donna is nice and the contrast between her every day knowledge of the technology that we all take for granted in order to help solve the crime is a funny contrast to Albert's less savvy knowledge of it. They make a great team. I don't know if Donna will feature in future books because Albert will be on his country wide tour learning how to cook his favorite meals, but I hope she rejoins him.
I just love how Rex Harrison interprets his human's behavior and his thoughts are hilarious! Anyone who knows and loves dogs should read this series. The author has got to be very familiar with dogs and their behavior to be so spot on with Rex's thoughts and behavior.
One of the things I like BEST about this book is the narrator of the audio version. His voice is very easy to listen to and so perfect for bringing the retired ( but obviously still sharp) detective superintendent Albert Smith to life, and voicing Rex Harrison's thoughts.
Oh yes, this is going to be one of my favorite book series. I hope the narrator continues through the series. It just wouldn't be the same if not.

I stumbled upon the Albert Smith culinary tours of England mysteries via an ad on social media which is unusual as I don't normally pay attention to advertising. In the case of author, Steve Higgs, I'm glad to have paid attention. Albert and his canine sidekick, Rex Harrison, are a delightful pair of sleuths who, not only solve crimes, they do so with common sense and humour. Kudos to Mr. Higgs for infusing his stories with eccentric characters who keep me wanting more and causing me fits of the giggles. I highly recommend this fast and funny series.

I really love this series of books. Albert Smith is someone so many of us older folks can relate to. I love to find books that not only are a good read, but that also impart factual information. I laughed so much at some of the antics that Albert and his well-intentioned canine companion got up to and this is rare in our world of bland, politically correct offerings. I hasten to add that there is nothing politically incorrect about any of Albert's story - it's just that so many of today's offerings are humourless and insipid in comparison to this rollicking good tale of madness and mayhem.

Pork Pie Pandemonium: The Albert Smith's Culinary Capers Recipe 1. By Steve Higgs.

    My Review.

When a retired Detective Superintendent chooses to take a culinary tour of the British Isles, he hopes to find tasty treats and delicious bakes....
What he finds is a clue to a crime in the ingredients for his pork pie..
At 78 and widowed Albert has decided to learn to cook and he's going to do so from the best the UK has to offer. So with his trusty 'service' dog in tow he sets off in search of the perfect Pork Pie. Rex Harrison his German Shepherd also served as Police, until he was thrown out for having a bad attitude! On his first attempt at a Pork Pie making class Albert and the snarky Rex are immediately thrown in to an investigation involving meat pies, murder and drugs!
This was a wonderful light-hearted cozy crime read. Whilst the mystery part didn't really take a genius to figure it out, it didn't matter because this read was all about the characters. Albert is an affable, laid back seen it all before smart as a whip character, quite happy to let people misjudge him by his age. But the real fun comes from the Big German Shepherd, Rex and his attempts to alert his owner to the fact he's already solved the crime.... If only humans had better noses! Rex is a delight to read and comedy gold for anyone who loves and knows dogs. The supporting characters are well written, especially Donna. The plot moves along at a fast pace, with more humour than action. I will definitely be reading more of these
