A psychotic episode was the only sensible explanation for Finn’s clouded memories, battered body and lost week of time. Demons aren’t real. They don’t run adult shops or hunt students for their lust. Just because his housemate had pink hair, it didn’t make her a fae in league with the devil, or him a one in a trillion, ‘chosen one’.But it had felt so damn good to be important and desired, even if it was all in Finn’s head.Returning to the swirling, beautifully passionate madness, or checking into a psychiatric facility are his options. Whichever way he steps, life as he knows it, is over.Stranded between two untenable options, with the sun and the temperature going down, a smiling stranger provides a temporary respite from his dilemma.Unfortunately for Finn, demons and fae are not the only beings stalking the night for the troubled and unwary.2nd part of Incubus, an m/m novella series. Graphic material with plenty of angst.NOT a standalone.

First let me state that this is the second book of the series and cannot be considered a standalone. At least to me. I think reading the first book is necessary to enjoying this one to its fullest. Now I find myself with mixed emotions about this book. But all of those are towards the way the story is playing out and not towards the author or the storyline in any way. In addition to the characters we meet in the first book, Milo, a shifter detective/bodyguard/muscle, joins the crew and begins to play a big part in Finn’s life. Ezra, the incubus sex demon, has recruited Finn to join his crew and while I was enamored with him in the first book, I find myself finding him quite distasteful in this. My final thoughts on this book/series is this: it is addictive, draws you in, and makes it very difficult to put down. I am on the the third in the series as I cannot leave the story left unfinished. This review is an honest and unbiased reflection of my thoughts after reading an advanced readers copy of the book.

Finn wakes up after a night with his new lover, a sex demon called Ezra. After leaving Ezra’s apartment above a sex shop, he stops in at a newsagent to pick up a sports drink where he spies the date on a newspaper, he had not spent the night, he had spent over a week! Confused and not wishing to head home where he lives with his housemate Pixie who introduced him to Ezra, he heads to the beach. Once there, he meets a friendly stranger, Milo, who seems to care for him, yet leads him right back into the hands of the demon.

In this second installment of the Incubus series, we learn more about what Finn really means to Ezra. A vascellum who can store the sexual passion of those he interacts with and feed it to the demon when they make love. What Ezra is unaware of, is how exactly Finn will affect him when they make that bond. Here is where the two main characters start to take off and we learn much more about them.

Additionally, Pixie’s connection to Milo is revealed. We find out exactly who and what Milo is, and how his natural instincts to protect Finn is going to affect Finn’s relationship with Ezra, possibly forever.

Once again the developing characters, their relationships and the slowly emerging story makes this book worth the 5 stars. Of course the m/m sex is there, but the true love-making between the two main characters is what really moves you.

Book 3 here we come (pun fully intended!)

More coerced sex. Starting to be less sexy and more rapey now, which isn’t exactly my flavor of romance. Still connected to the characters enough to want to know what happens next but I’m really hoping it gets more romantic/erotic vs. sketchy power dynamic.

Continues right were we left off in book one, Incubus Seduction.

"Finn Barrett is mine, whether he realizes it or not. The fact that he's playing hard to get makes life a little more interesting, don't you think?"

How selfish is Ezra? And with the bond, does he get feelings for Finn? He's a soulless demon...will the bond change him, somehow? Oh, I need to read more!!

"Let go of those old-fashioned human morals. You're not one of the sheep anymore. You're different from them, better than them."

My heart is breaking with that ending!

WTF was up with Finn in this book?! Yes, Ezra was a bit heavy with the glamour, but Finn wasn’t unaware of his circumstances, and his apparent lack of learning from the experience that had already happened was irritating. Finn knows that he wants to help Ezra, and he knows that he can ask for a glamour to ease the whole process, but somehow he doesn’t trust Ezra in this one facet of their relationship?

And how stupid is this Council that purports to protect humans, and apparently, keeping the supernatural secret from them, and yet, they vilify the best tool in that arsenal. Since they are so ‘against’ the selective use of glamour to keep their secret, do they simply kill any human who finds out about them? For their own good? Or will the human simply be imprisoned until they die to prevent the secret from spreading?

I liked the first book in the series, but I wasn’t prepare for the rollercoaster of emotions this one was going to be. I liked this second book even more than the first one. It has being so exciting getting to know all this characters and to understand this odd paranormal world. Everything has being so interesting, so different also. It hada very high heat level, not always my main focus on a book but this times its being appreciate it because it is importnt for the plot. What I liked the most about the book is how it has made me love a character in a moment and hate him in the next. All this emotions are just so insane. It’s being such a great read and I just can’t stop. I’m already reading the next in the series. Great book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Emotionally intense

This was even more engrossing and riveting than Incubus Seduction, partly because it’s longer. Ezra and Finn’s relationship is fascinating. You’re never really certain whether Ezra has good intentions towards Finn or not, or if Ezra is only acting out of selfishness. An added layer of intrigue, as I mentioned in my review for Incubus Seduction, is that Ezra is an incubus and a demon, which would suggest to readers that, due to his species, he is likely to be self-serving and malicious.

Yet, Ezra doesn’t seem to be that malicious. It looks like he is just trying to survive in this world, like everybody else. Yes, he wants power and glory, but that’s still better than wanting to destroy or control every living being under the sun. Perhaps I’m being lenient towards him, but he is a demon, so I wouldn’t judge him with the same standards as I would a human being. Regardless, I love Ezra and he is my favorite character!

Finn appears more interesting in Possession than in Seduction. I felt so sorry for him in how he changed so much since being with Ezra. Finn isn’t an ordinary human being anymore, after the events in Incubus Seduction, but wow, life has become so tough for him. Not that his life was ideal before, but what he has to deal with now is intense, arguably even more intense and complicated than what most human protagonists in the fantasy genre have to handle. It’s intriguing to think about whether Finn’s changed attitude is only because of what Ezra did to him, or if Finn had always had some of these feelings deep inside.

Milo was quite a likable character. I appreciated that there are some shorter hot guys in this story (Milo and Finn), since not everyone is into the classic “tall and handsome” type. I personally prefer short and pretty boys myself. (I could be called a twink who likes twinks.) Back to Milo, I enjoyed watching the conflicts between Ezra and Milo. They seem to be both allies and foes. I believe Milo is sincerely trying to help Finn. Ezra’s intentions are less clear, however.

Regarding Finn’s activities as a vascellum, and Ezra’s as an incubus, I am still very curious whether the two would be interested in becoming an exclusive couple at all—I already see some instances of jealousy in this book. Not that they have to be monogamous, of course, particularly given their circumstances. Moreover, I liked that they have sexual feelings towards other guys too, including strangers, which makes this couple feel more realistic to me, as neither Ezra nor Finn are demisexual. It feels very honest. As long as they are each other’s favorite.

Another aspect of the story I was glad to see, is that Ezra is not invincible. He can make mistakes and foolish decisions too. In fact, Pixie doesn’t seem to think too highly of Ezra’s intelligence! I like Ezra’s fallibility, as this makes him more relatable and easier to sympathize with.

Overall, I loved how emotionally intense the story was. I can already imagine how sad I’ll be when I finish this series…I am quite addicted and captivated by these books, just as Finn is intoxicated with and captivated by Ezra.

I’m reading Incubus Pain (the sequel) now. I won’t spoil it, but Incubus Pain gives additional perspective and depth to this intriguing story. I’m curious to see how Ezra and Finn’s unconventional relationship will develop!

3.0 out of 5 stars Beware the ick
Reviewed in Canada on November 10, 2023
Book one was ok, but this isn't even a dark romance at this point: just a man being horribly abused by someone drunk on power who wants more money. It's giving me the ick trying to get through it; the only reason I'll check out the next book is to hope that his friends get him away from his abuser.
