Reviews:
"An excellent read. It is very well written and draws you quickly in to the inner life of the main character, Michael. I would recommend this book to anyone wanting a relaxing, good read, which also makes you think about the big issues of life which concern us all." (5-star Amazon review)
"In reading the book, it took me to a place I hadn't thought about or even considered. It helped me to look at my prayer life for what it was. I am now on my own journey to rekindle the art and love of prayer in my own life. Thank you for the Spirit in which this book was written and for not leaving God out! I would recommend this book to everyone who is seeking a more intimate relationship with the Lord through His Word, and through prayer." (5-star Amazon review)
"Brooke takes the reader on a spiritual journey of peace, tranquility, meditation and relaxation. Oh what a journey it is! From page one I was mesmerized and drawn into Michael's life. Readers beware as reading The Prayer Seeker may cause you to take a much deeper look at your own relationship with God. I highly recommend this book for Christians and non-Christians alike." This book absorbed me from the first sentence. I did not want to be interrupted for any reason: not to eat; drink; answer the phone; visit the restroom. It fed my hungry soul.
First of all, let me say that Ms Brooke's command of the English language is beautiful. I don't known if I obtained this book for free or for 99 cents, but usually such books are increasingly a waste of my time and the electricity I use to charge up my kindle. I am simply appalled at the legion of people who dare to call themselves writers who clearly demonstrate that they thought they were too cool for school and thus paid no attention to their English teachers. They dare to take money from the reading public when they have no command of the basic tools of writing such as spelling, grammar, syntax, vocabulary, word order and the inability to tell one homonym from another.
None of this applies to Ms. Brooke. One word sums up her writing style, and that is luminous. Her writing is spare. After reading quite a way through it I was astonished to realize how involved I was in a book that was mainly narrative when I usually can't stand that. However the contemplative style matched the subject.
I deeply identified with Michael, his struggle is my struggle. I envied him his spiritual director. I have searched in vain for a spiritual director who would actually direct me.
I have read a review of this book which says that because the main character is a homosexual he could not possibly desire God. That makes no sense to me. God created every single person so that they would desire Him in some manner, way, shape or form.
There is more I could say about this book but I don't want to get into spoilers. If you are a seeker of something more in life, this novella will resonate with your spirit. May the Holy Spirit dance in your heart as you read it.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 19, 2014I guess it's possible to run into people that you might think are demon possessed. I've never run into such a situation but this story just makes you believe that if we all stand our ground in our Christian beliefs, God will destroy the Satan's in our world (whatever form they show up in) and give us strength to follow our faith and help others along the way. SORRY = THIS REVIEW WAS MEANT TO GO ON "THE DEVIL'S GAME" NOT THE PRAYER SEEKER. PLEASE SWITCH TO THE PROPER BOOK = THANK YOU!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 20, 2014I downloaded this book to discover it is not a Christian book at all and immediately deleted it from my library. Amazon again
miscategorized a book. Just because it mentions God does not make it a Christian book but, this is definitely fiction because homosexuality is a sin in God's eyes and the author would know that if she had actually read her Bible and He would never bless such a union in any way, shape or, form. This "fiction" book is meant to mislead people.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 25, 2016I thought I would love the book due to my inclination toward the topic matter. It started well enough, but started to drag as the store reached the middle point. By the time it reached the three-quarter point it was plodding and slowed to a crawl. I am guessing the intent of the author was to show that the last part was more difficult that the first. If so, a rewrite to express that in a different way besides slowing the story pace would prove helpful. I was never able to finish the book and gave up on it at about the 82% mark.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 31, 2014Life has already taken fifty-year old Michael on a remarkable journey of one failed marriage, a failed relationship and through it all there has been God even when he felt he had walked away from God and the church. Now he has left his job seeking to fulfill a need, a desire possibly a hunger. A man on a quest to find prayer again possibly the God of his twenties but again it seems so much more. Enlisting the aid of a spiritual director and new found friends he realizes it is his past that must be settled with God and himself.
Brooke takes the reader on a spiritual journey of peace, tranquility, meditation and relaxation. Oh what a journey it is! From page one I was mesmerized drawn into Michael’s life relating in a sense to his sense of yearning for peace and alone time with God. Yes I have read the other reviews and I disagree yes Michael has to deal with his sexuality but in the end he finds the answers that make him whole maybe not the answers or the way that others may think but then each person’s journey with God is their own. Read your Bibles as truth does lie within.
The author writes with a unique brushstroke of pen Christian fiction yes but so remarkably written that one wonders if there is truth upon its pages. Written in first person but outstandingly works here to see inside of Michael’s feelings and reactions to what is happening within him and around him. Readers beware as reading “The Prayer Seeker” may cause you to take a much deeper look at your own relationship with God. I highly recommend for Christians and non-Christians alike.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 26, 2015Have you ever wanted something unusual in your life? The character in this story did want an unusual thing, but he wanted to pray. So the story is all about seeking God in prayer. I learned some things to apply to mine. You might enjoy all the ways he did and enjoy the book on your journey.

5.0 out of 5 stars Please, Take Off The Blinkers
decided to read this book after hearing elsewhere online that it got slated in a review on Amazon by someone suffering from an apparent prejudice against homosexuals. I found the review and, being an innately curious person (as well as one with a sharp dislike for homophobia) I wondered what Anne had written that could earn such a curt description. I've read a few of her books and none of them are exactly simplistic. Her ability to capture the nuances of an individual or situation in an economy of words is one of the things I enjoy about her writing. I was therefore not entirely surprised when the book I read this afternoon and this evening turned out to be so different from the one described in the review that it seems almost absurd to claim the latter describes the former.
When I decided to review the book myself after reading it, I initially intended to describe how the reviewer had reduced the book down to such a few short sentences that all the spiritual value and insight was exorcised. And indeed that is the case. For example, the emphasis on the need for individual experience of God, rather than a one-size-fits-all approach, was entirely ignored.
However when re-reading the somewhat perfunctory review, it struck me that the reviewer had even got her central claim wrong: the central character does not "realise that he is homosexual" at all. He is very much aware of the nature of his sexuality right from the beginning, as is the reader, when his own understanding of his sexuality is described as "fluid" near the end of the first chapter. And since he had a ten year marriage to a woman he both loved and lusted for, and at least one other heterosexual relationship (again with a healthy dose of lust) after that, there is no doubt he has a genuine interest in women. So if he could be described as bisexual, he is almost certainly no higher than a 1 on the Kinsey scale.
It's worth noting that Anne Brooke has a reasonably extensive back-list of eBooks on Amazon which can be accessed with a few clicks of the mouse, and it would not have taken more than a few seconds to realise that, in addition to writing Christian fiction, she also writes gay romance - and occasionally both in the same story. So either the reviewer read the book intending to leave a bad review, or she didn't bother to check out Anne's other titles. Either way, that reflects rather poorly on the reviewer.
So that gives me two reasons for recommending the book. Firstly, because it's a damned good read (and I hope you'll take not just my word for it, but also the word of others who've given the book 5-star ratings) and secondly because re-reading that review after reading the book is a sterling education in the negative consequences of allowing prejudice to blinker your vision. It is evident that the reviewer got absolutely nothing of value out of the book, and that is both her fault and her loss. I hope and pray that in time she will read the book again and benefit fully from it.

4.0 out of 5 stars a good read
this was an interesting book. A classic story of a person's emptiness without God in their lfe and how He can fill it up and make you whole. He can make you feel worthwhile and fulfilled. A very interesting story and well written.

4.0 out of 5 stars A quiet insight
(review by Cat, not Phil)
A quiet and gentle novel, which isn't afraid to face some of the bigger issues in a spiritual journey. In several places, where I found the story line resonated strongly, the book read as a piece of reflective writing. Where it resonated least, the book read as a novel - I did not find this a problem. I found the last chapter disappointing, not because Michael was exploring his past sexual relationships; but because I'd truly hoped that his loneliness, difficulty forming relationships and his contentment to be alone was a reflection of high-functioning autism.
In each chapter, the reader engages with Michael as he seeks the 'right' pathway for his life, accompanied by the Bible quotations which help him interpret his experiences. This is lacking in the last chapter, which carries its own agenda.

3.0 out of 5 stars Thought provoking but not really a novel
As a novel this didn't really work, there was little storyline and no plot. I found myself wondering at times, if I was really reading a novel. It had more merit as a piece of reflective writing. There were a couple of instances which made me stop and think about my own spiritual life and relationship with God, and I think that if it had been developed more as a thought provoking investigation into the place of prayer in daily life it could have been quite powerful.
