Promise Her: A Friends to Lovers Romance (Military Men of Lexington Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 290 ratings

A friends to lovers small town romance

No one knows the secret I've buried inside.

When the unimaginable happens, the past doesn't matter. Only the future. Only this baby.

The grief and guilt are overwhelming, especially when I find comfort in my late husband's best friend. Taylor Cain isn't known for letting others in, but he's here for me in a way no one else is.

Even though I'm playing with fire, his arms are the only place I feel safe.

***

Life can change in the blink of an eye.

When I lose my best friend, I bury my own grief to be there for his pregnant widow. Somehow between vowing to protect Scarlett Gilbert and her baby to holding her in my arms, I developed feelings for her. Feelings I question are within my right.

Having her in my life makes me feel alive for the first time. Between her commitment to his memory and respect for my best friend, we fear judgment for the love we share.

Some say promises are made to be broken, but when I promise her my heart, I intend to keep it.

Andrea Johnston writes the best small-town romances. Promise Her was a sweet, sexy with light angst. This romance had ALL the feels and I can't recommend it enough!!!!

Q: She’s always been my best friend’s wife, my friend, but the moment we kissed everything changed. Being here with her, experiencing these moments as she prepares to welcome her son, means something to me. She means something to me. I know there is nothing I won’t do for her. I will care for her, protect her, and most of all promise her. Promise her safety and love, in whatever form she’ll take it.

Wow. Andrea Johnston writes a powerful romance with Promise Her. I have always loved the stories she releases since I discovered her work a year ago and yet, Promise Her has to be one of my very favorites. It’s a passionate, slow burn romance where feelings run deep and death further solidifies the connection between Scarlett and Taylor, friends with one common denominator... one which should put them solidly in the friend zone. Only as forbidden as their relationship is, it’s also a natural and beautiful evolution between two best friends united in grief over the passing of someone they both loved dearly. But appearance can be deceiving as the Promise Her storyline unveils. As the romance blooms between Scarlett and Taylor, so did my emotions with this beautifully written dual POV small-town, military romance.

Q: Taylor Cain is the type of man women dream of meeting, one who is unattainable and almost fictitious.

Readers will remember Taylor from the Country Road Series, where his bar, Country Road provides a backdrop to much of the series. Yet the Military Men of Lexington is a spin-off and Taylor’s book is the first in this new series—a series I can’t wait to read more of! This book is without a doubt emotional and I was very invested in the story... in the characters and in their much deserved HEA. As emotional as Promise Her is, it's also entertaining as well. Sweet and lightly sexy with characters that you truly want to see achieve that ultimate HEA. Your heart will be invested in this one. It’s a story of the emotional devastation of losing your first love… only to find new love as a result! Having read many of the books in Andrea’s catalog this year, I would say that Taylor is my favorite hero she’s written. Getting into his head and learning more about him has always been on my mind, and I was thrilled when Andrea announced her intention to release his story. So yes, I was totally Gah Gah for Taylor... But I won’t lie, the real draw for this story came after I read Small-Town Heart, which has cameos from Henry and Scarlett. I was dying to know the story behind the happy couple that was introduced in the café… and the woman who becomes Mercy’s best friend. I was also drawn to the connection I have to a story regarding the wife of a service member. As a military spouse myself, I found it easy to identify with Scarlett as the heroine, although we have little in common—yet, Andrea really wrote a woman that we can all see in ourselves. Her skill with creating characters that we find a connection to is something I look forward to in each book I read by Andrea and it's what keeps her on the top of my TBR for the books I have yet to get to read by this author.

Q: I won’t tell Taylor that one of the biggest kinks in our armor, in our marriage, was Henry’s never-ending jealousy of his best friend.

I cannot recommend this story enough and would tell you to sit with tissues because they will be put to use. I don’t cry easily—and it's rare that a book makes tissues a necessity for me—but I used them while reading Promise Her more than one. Promise Her is without a doubt a solid 5-star read and you're missing out if you're still pursuing reviews and not one-clicking this book immediately!!!

    Quotes:
I’ve loved Henry Gilbert for ten years and for each of those years, I prepared myself for his deployments and the possibility he may not return. What I didn’t know was that one senseless act would completely change everything I had prepared for.

Our friendship was tested over the years, but nothing caused a rift between us, brothers by choice at a young age, until Scarlett. Henry’s inability to appreciate the gift he had at home pi$$ed me off.

It’s important to be strong for Scarlett. That I’m here for her like Henry would want.

These men were brothers in the truest form, and as much as they loved one another, they were also each other’s worst enemy at times.

With every one of Andrea’s books that I have the privilege of reading, I always feel she’s one upped herself. This time, she has in spectacular fashion, outdone herself. Promise Her is a story that falls outside of her typical Rom Com. It’s a completely different type of story that she normally writes but still her signature slow burn. It had me wanting more to this story. It had all the feels, her signature humor but much more low key, and some added suspense thrown in. I loved the story of Taylor and Scarlett and hope she can revisit their story in the future. I love how flawlessly that Andrea incorporates her characters from the Country Road Series and Small Town Heart into this book. It was like catching up with longtime friends. I loved this first book in the Military Men of Lexington and look forward to the rest of the series. I would, without a doubt or hesitation, recommend this book.

This book (**deep sigh**). Ahhhh, it’s just the best feel good book ever! Poor Scarlett, she’s lost her husband (well, she’s lost a lot more than that before he ever gets into his accident) and is pregnant. Henry’s military brothers step in to help and it’s more than she could ever hope for. Taylor (Sugar, to his buddies...how sexy is that?) is supportive, respectful and genuine almost to a fault as he fights his attraction for his best friends wife. This book is sweet and oh, so sexy and there’s even a little mystery thrown in. Like all of Andrea Johnston’s books, it was a really great one! I can’t wait to get to Cap and Dakota and also see what happens with Conner and all the other characters in Lexington.

Even though the book starts off with a tragedy, it ends up being more romantic and suspenseful than anything else. Scarlet and Taylor have been friends for a long time but when tragedy strikes, he steps up in a big way to support and protect her. Feelings develop between them but both feel too guilty to act upon them. However, when someone starts stalking Scarlet, they grow closer and eventually give in to their feelings. The chemistry is great between them and I loved the ending.

This is the first book in the Military Men of Lexington series. It’s a spin-off series from the Country Road series. It’s a standalone. You do not have to read any other books to enjoy it.

I feel like this book was different from anything Andrea has written. The heroine is a pregnant widow. The hero was one of her husband’s best friends. It’s not your typical boy meets girl story. I enjoyed it being different. It checked a lot of boxes.

Promise Her sets up this new series. I’m already looking forward to the next book.

Promise Her is a standalone romance by Andrea Johnston with lots of characters from her previous novels. This book is a very emotional, friends to lovers, single mother story with plenty of heat, just enough alpha man protectiveness, lots of tears, and a little suspense.

Taylor is a former military man who has accepted his permanent bachelor status. He is a protective, southern gentleman determined to take care of Scarlett. Scarlett is a sweet but sassy recent widow of Taylor’s best friend. Their love progresses naturally and is a bit of a slow burn. This was a sweet, but emotional love story. I now want to go back and read the previous stories referenced in this book and I am definitely hoping that tough guy bachelors Connor and Grant have stories for me to read too.
