Prose Before Bros: A Best Friend’s Brother Biker Romance (Green Valley Library Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 1,063 ratings

Nothing about being a librarian prepared Thuy Nguyen for such a wide variety of casseroles. Or life in a small town. Or becoming a farmer. But what can she do when her catastrophe-prone best friend begs her for help? After all, Maddy has always been there for Thuy. It’s time to return the favor.

It’s simple really, all she has to do is: learn everything about farming ASAP, save her BBF’s family business from disaster, and avoid being caught staring at Maddy’s biker brother, and his muscles, and his smile, and his soulful, sexy eyes. Oh yeah, and she should definitely not fall in love with him.

Easy, right? . . . Right.

'Prose Before Bros' is a full-length contemporary romantic comedy, can be read as a standalone, and is book #1 in the Green Valley Library series, Green Valley World, Penny Reid Book Universe.

In 2017, several authors expressed interest in writing stories for a theoretical “Pennyverse” (author Penny Reid’s Universe) in some capacity (whether that be writing a canon story about new characters within the Pennyverse, writing a continuation of a current couple’s story within the Pennyverse, writing a fanfic in an alternate timeline using Pennyverse characters, etc.) We collated the data we received, marinated in it, and created this collaborative business model.

Smartypants Romance is a small publisher that is indie-minded. It is a business whose mission is:

1) To be self-sustaining.

2) To be value added to: a) the authors and professionals (support personnel) who are published by/within/work for the SRU, b) the Penny Reid Brand, and c) the romance community and world at large.

3) To set an example of best practices, inclusion, representation, professionalism, mentorship, and craft-excellence.

4) To be drama free and efficient.

Not quite realistic, but I really enjoyed it anyway
This review was originally posted on Books of My Heart Review copy was received from Publicity team. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review. Here we are in the Green Valley library series, another aspect of the Penny Reid universe. This is the Tennessee town where the Winston Brothers grew up and the library is where Bethany Winston worked. I've now read the first three books in this series and they all seem to alternate point of view between the male and female main characters by chapter. Prose Before Bros is the third book. I read some iffy reviews but I really enjoyed this one. I will say it is not realistic and sometimes I have trouble with that. Somehow though, when it is way off reality, I can just say oh it's fiction and love it anyway. I felt that way here. Drill (Teddy) is a biker with the Iron Wraiths which is bad news. But he has been there for 16 years, half his life. He's a not too bad guy who has lived in really bad situations. Now he actually considers changing his life but that is no easy thing. He really has some major problems with the club now with his Dad's death and his sister back in town. Thuy is his sister's best friend; an amazing friend. Maddy and Thuy have known each other 10 years through college and early working life being roommates. Thuy is an awesome librarian. I loved reading about her ideas for the Green Valley library and her work there. It was fun to see Naomi and Sabrina briefly too. I'm not sure I completely believed their romance but it makes a certain sense. They do have a few things in common, surprisingly. There's some scary events before the happy ending. I loved the way it worked out though. Excerpt: “Tell me: what kind of books do the men you sleep with read?” She blinked. Not what she expected him to say. She felt herself smile, slowly. “It’s not like I have a required reading list,” she said, then paused. “Although now that you mention it, that’s not a bad idea.” He chuckled. “Probably classics, or ‘literature’, or whatever smart people read,” he said, and there was a note of self-deprecation that somehow broke Thuy’s heart. She quickly shook her head. “I don’t read a lot of lit fic — nothing too snobby,” she said. “I mean, I don’t just read literature or classics, although I appreciate them. I read lots of genre fiction, too. Romance, sci-fi, fantasy, mystery, thrillers. I think it’s important to read outside of your comfort zone: different authors, different experiences. I have comfort reads, too, but I… well, if you hadn’t guessed, I read all the time,” she finally said, as she realized she was rambling. He was staring at her like she was something brand new, something he’d never experienced before. She felt embarrassed, and quickly finished her drink. “You know,” he said, his voice tinged with amused surprise, “I don’t think I’m as passionate about anything as you are about books.” She let out a half-laugh. “They are my favorite thing ever. They gave me a place to go when my life was shitty, and they have continually given me a reason to get out of bed in the morning. I read every single day. They’re my lifeline.” “Now I envy you,” he said, and she got the feeling he wasn’t just bullshitting her — he sounded like he meant it. “What do you think a guy like me should read?” She felt warmth, and it had nothing to do with the amaretto she’d consumed. This was the sort of challenge she loved. She scooted a little closer, so they could talk over the music without yelling. “What kind of movies do you like? What kind of stories?” By the end of their talk, nearly two hours had gone by. She found out he liked adventure stories, and that he liked stories with justice and questionable heroes and things that had puzzles. She could think of several books, across several genres, and started to list them all. “Whoa, whoa,” he said, holding up a hand. “I’m not going to be able to remember all of them. Which one of those is your favorite?” She paused, thinking about it. “For a true book junkie,” she said slowly, “that’s like asking ‘which one is your favorite child?’ or ‘what appendage would you like to keep?’” He laughed, and she smiled back at him. “But, based on what you’ve told me,” she said, “I’d say The Name of the Wind, by Patrick Rothfuss.” “Okay.” He nodded. “I’ll read it.” She must’ve looked skeptical, because he chuckled. “I mean it. I’ll give it a try.” “It’s like seven hundred pages long,” she warned him. His eyes widened, then he shrugged. “Okay, it may take a little while. But hell, I’m game.” “Why?” He was silent for a long moment, staring into her eyes. She squirmed as the heat from his gaze seemed to seep into her very bones. “Do you really not know?” he asked, so matter-of-factly that she felt like an idiot. He’s volunteering to read a book for you. She felt heat suffuse her cheeks. That might be the single sexiest thing a guy had ever offered to do for her.

Book 3 in the Green Valley Library series, part of the Penny Reid book universe, Green Valley world, this is another new to me author, and the story picks shortly after the main events of the first two books in the series (Love in Due Time, and Crime and Periodicals), so about six months after the end of Dr Strange Beard. While I feel this holds up well as a standalone, various members of the Iron Wraiths beside Drill have roles here. We first meet Drill in Truth or Beard, and he and the rest of the Wraiths have reoccurring appearances throughout the Winston Brothers books, so having previously read the series would help provide background and context for this book. I’d particularly recommend Dr Strange Beard, which sets up the current state of the Iron Wraiths.

The author made it easy to empathize with these characters with writing that makes you feel right along with them. For Thuy (and for me, at least) that includes how she feels about the library, and books:

“From the time I learned to read, the library was the place I could escape. I felt Sarah Crewe’s nobility in The Little Princess...I rode dragons in Anne McCaffrey’s books. I went to the restaurant at the end of the universe with Douglas Adams.”

Smart and tough, we slowly get hints on Thuy’s background, but it’s clear pretty quickly that she’s got some familiarity with criminal elements, so Drill’s background doesn’t faze her other than in a “getting involved with him would be really stupid“ kind of way, but she finds herself attracted in spite of her best intentions. I loved her loyalty to Maddy even as she struggles to find a place for herself in this foreign, small town, farm country world. Even the library is a struggle as her attempts to help are met with suspicion and sometimes outright hostility from the traditionalist, head librarian.

As for Drill, my impression of him from Winston Brothers books was of a guy who was probably decent enough one on one (he fished regularly with Hank Weller and Beau Winston), but was involved in some shady stuff through the Iron Wraiths. And that’s pretty much the Drill we see here, a man who is struggling with disillusionment as the club that has been his family for the past sixteen years is at risk of falling apart completely, and the man he thought was his brother and friend, Catfish, shows he’s willing to do just about anything to prevent that from happening. Drill’s torn loyalties are a large part of what drives the story, as he (and we), try to figure out a way to keep his sister, and the woman he’d very much like to have a relationship with, safe from his club brothers while still meeting his obligations to that club.

There are some moments of humor; for example, Thuy finding out the guy she’s holding a shotgun on is actually Maddy’s brother (“Well. This promised to be awkward.”😂) or how Scotia Simmons (yes, THAT Scotia Simmons from the Winston Brothers) comes to believe that Thuy and Maddy are a lesbian couple and soon the rest of the town believes it as well. It’s really the suspense and mystery that struck me, though, as I had all these questions throughout the book that kept me turning the pages (What exactly is Thuy’s background? Is Drill going to choose Thuy and Maddy over the Wraiths? If he does, what will the club do to punish him?), most of which were answered, but not all (who DID Catfish have in his bedroom? Anyone who has read Dr. Strange Beard will have their suspicions).

I loved how well Thuy and Drill understood each other, and how protective they each were in their own way, even as my heart was breaking for them as I couldn’t see a way out for Drill. By the end, I literally had tears in my eyes as I was cheering for them both, but for Thuy in particular as she made her stand.

Great characters plus suspense, humor, heat, and all the feels, I loved how all the elements came together for a masterfully crafted conclusion. This author has a new fan, and I have a new entry for my “best of 2019” list. 5+ stars

As a Vietnamese reader, I approach the rare Vietnamese character with both excitement and trepidation. The excitement is for the representation and the trepidation is for how my culture will be described. The culture wasn’t a huge part of the story, as Thuy is third generation but I felt it was represented respectfully. I do appreciate that the names were spelled correctly and that the pronunciation of Thuy’s name was explained (Twee). It’s uncommon for our names are spelled correctly in print.

All 4 stars are for Thuy’s character. She’s a tough, well-educated chick. She was an awesome friend to Maddy and she faced off the old school librarians and the MC gang. I actually thought she was too good for Drill. I felt that his character wasn’t redeemed well enough and he spent much of the story justifying his bad choices. He still felt weak to me in the end.

This was a great story! I was so engrossed and riveted to this book! The suspense as to what direction it was going to follow was excellent! It just built and built.... I couldn't begin to imagine how the author was going to get Teddy out of the situation he had gotten himself in. I couldn't imagine how he and Twee could have a happy ending! It kept me on pins and needles and caught up in the story non-stop for hours! 😁

The storyline was really good. The affection, love, and mutual support between Maddy and Twee was very heartwarming. The romance between Teddy and Twee was super exciting, sexy and very sweet! I really enjoyed that Teddy came to see clearly the truth of what his life had become. And... The surprise at the end was spectacular!!! Cathy Yardley really hit it out of the ballpark with it! I was blown away!!!

I love authors who give us epilogues.... The one in this book was so uplifting and satisfying.. I sighed as I finished the book, at the perfection of a jolly good story!!!! In my opinion this book came the closest to a Penny Reid type story out of all the Smartypants series that I have read so far but I have lots to go 😊! I highly recommend it... It's a real winner!!!😇

I love the Green Valley World, and this story fit right in. I'm just not a fan of the threat of such adversity as what the Wraiths bring to the table. I'm thankful for the positive outcome though. 💟

Prose Before Bros by Cathy Yardley is the third standalone in the Green Valley Library series by smartypants romance. A book obsessed librarian and a morally gray biker, yes please 🙋 I devoured this book.

I really enjoy novels with bookish characters and literary references sprinkled within and I really enjoy a good MC book where the hero who wants more to his life , smash those two together and I'm a happy reader. Cathy Yardley is a new author to me and I'm excited to check out other books she has written.

This story rocks. I was up till three am cause I couldn't put it down. Cathy Yardley has pulled off the impossible. I normally cannot read stories with a biker dude hero. I've watched too much ID discovery and all I can picture is some hairy guy with a greasy face who needs to shower. I LOVED this story. The male lead is sexy, complex, surprisingly sweet, and I actually believed he smelled good. The heroine is WONDERFUL - a tiny bad-ass who loves books. Being from the south, I can say the small southern town setting was spot on.. From the casseroles to the Hummingbird cake to the lack of wi-fi. Perfection. Read this book. Now, I gotta go take a nap.

While I liked this book, I didn't love it. I think it's more the 'I'm not much for the bad boy biker type,' more than anything, but I did still enjoy the story. Thuy is an excellent addition to the Green Valley world and I loved that Drill has had his story told. And I liked them together. The last hour of reading I was honestly concerned about how it could all wrap up, but Yardley cleverly covered all her based and gave a satisfying conclusion. Great add to the series.

I will be looking into what else this author has written . All Smartypants book will be an automatic purchase for me. I also listened to the Audible version after reading this book and it’s perfect.

4.0 out of 5 stars Finding A New Way Of Doing Things
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 12, 2021
This is the third book in a series of connected books. This series is a spin-off from The Winston Brother Series written by Penny Reid, set in the same world, but written by different authors. The book stands alone but does have some cross over of characters and shared history.

Thuy has never lived anywhere other than Oakland, California, but she’s helping her best friend in the world, Maddy, in Green Valley, which is a tiny place in Tennessee. It’s a bit of a culture shock, especially because they are dealing with the death of Maddy’s father, who had not been a particularly pleasant man, and who had been a dreadful father. Maddy hadn’t been back to Green Valley since she went away to college, where she met Thuy. Maddy has helped Thuy through so much and she wouldn’t have graduated without her help, so helping to Tetris the food they’d been given into the fridge seems like a small step towards paying her back. Though she is a little taken aback when Maddy decides to stay and asks Thuy to stay too. Being a big city librarian hasn’t given her enough training to work a farm, but for Maddy she’ll try.

Drill is in a 1% MC. He’s been part of the club since he was kicked out by his father aged 16. His father cut him off completely but he felt he had a much better family in the Iron Wraiths MC. He still kept a distant eye on his sister, Maddy, but contact with blood family isn’t allowed by the Iron Wraiths MC. Over the last few years the Iron Wraiths have had a lot of adjusting to do after key members were imprisoned. Drill has had to step up as one of the longest serving members, and one of the toughest enforcers. However, things aren’t really sitting straight with him lately and he’s been questioning some of the decisions being made. When he meets Thuy he’s instantly attracted to this pocket sized Vietnamese tower of strength, which only confuses him more because he’s forbidden from getting involved with her.

On the surface these two characters have little in common, but as they dig deeper there’s much more to connect them than discourage their feelings. Drill’s crisis of identity is central to this book and Thuy is a surprising source of consolation and guidance as he tries to sort out what he wants from life. She is also a source of fascination and desire. Both are trying to lead different lives and they aid each other on the way.

This book was very different from what I was expecting. Both characters were filled with surprises and enjoyed that a lot. Maddy was a little annoying, but she’d been through a lot so I gave her a pass when I read about that, plus how she’d helped Thuy in the past made her much more endearing. Though she wasn’t a main character she was a major part of the story and being ambivalent about her was a little distracting.

As this author is new to me, I will definitely keep an eye out for other books by her that I might enjoy. In the mean time I’ll keep reading this series.

This book is amazing. The writing is exceptional and the story is absolutely gripping. A bit darker at times than the other books in this launch so far, it was still utterly romantic too. My heart broke and swooned so many times it didn’t know what to do with itself.

I fell head over heels in love with Drill from the first time we see a glimpse of his soft side and Thuy is simply amazing; extremely fierce and loyal and an overall badass with a big heart.

Prose before bros is so far my greatest surprise of this Smartypants launch. I didn’t know what to expect and I absolutely loved it.
