Protected (Raike Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.2 out of 5 stars 70 ratings

One of the world’s best assassins left no trace behind.

Alone in an unfamiliar city, Raike finds his curiosity piqued when the body of a military steward is carried away. The only sign of murder is the victim’s last words: “If anything happens to me they’ll go after the commander next.”

Compelled to poke at an imperial cover up, Raike finds himself caught in the center of the chaos, targeted from all sides, where his presence now endangers an old ally he has been trying to avoid at all costs.

Jackson Lear grew up around the world and has developed an accent that can sometimes be described as mostly Irish, a fair whack of English, and a hint of American. That's pretty handy for someone who lives in Australia. He considers 8am to be the middle of the night, has a habit of buying more books than he can ever read, and still considers becoming Batman as a viable career option.

"Protected" is a direct sequel to book one "The Blade Within." Raike is in unfamiliar territory this time as enemies, both known and unknown, aim to take him and his allies down.

We get to know a couple of the characters from the first book much better, namely Alysia and the assassin Zara. One of the best things about this series is that I enjoy the dialogue and interactions between characters as much as the action. When Raike questions someone to gain information or get closer to his goal, there is often times a game of cat and mouse that goes on that I find riveting. The dialogue and conversations is definitely one of the strongest points in these books.

As for the aforementioned action, there is a lot of that here too. The fight scenes are gritty, violent, and exciting. Raike is a capable fighter but by no means perfect. He takes his lumps in fights where he is almost always outnumbered yet somehow manages to either escape or come out on top.

Another fun outing in the Raike series and I hope the author continues to make more of these stories.

Part mystery part action. Raike has to figure out a very intricate plot while avoiding the city watch, bounty hunters and an assassin. Started on the show side but built up to an exciting finish!

It's a decent story, if you're into these kinds of stories. It took me a while to get into the story. The first book was the same. It does a slow and steady rise to action and then it explodes with it. Personally, I really like Raike! He's awesome!

Events move so fast I have to speed read to keep up! Fights were fun. In the end, I feel like I ran a marathon

Once more mercenary and now bounty hunter Raike must figure out a mystery and come to the rescue. Only this time it not only involves his friend Alysia Kasera Lavarta and her bodyguard Zara, but her husband as well.

With an assasin, death threats and more in play, Raike forms an unlikely alliance with Zara and must defend himself, Alysia and her husband from a most powerful man.

Griping story, the lead character hardly has time to recover from one harrowing experience before another crisis unfurls.

I enjoyed the first in the series - but this one was even better. Raike is like a bull in a china shop - but that makes him awesome.

I loved this book! Such realistic characters, multiple threats, twisted plots. I especially like that this isn’t just a save the princess and now she’s in love with him type of book.

Raike is a tough character with a strong personality full of strengths and flaws. His fights are realistic and in depth. The logic this author put into him is amazing.

The world in his books is brutal and not glamorized.

I highly recommend reading this book and the whole series if you like action, adventure, realistic cause and effect, and suspense.

At times I thought I was reading a report from an investigative journalist as Raike stumbles into another mystery. At times the story was tenuous and the introduction of vampires into the mix has shifted things away from the sword and sorcery genre. It just seems an odd sort of world he's conjured up where just about anything goes. I'll certainly read the next book to see what happens next.
