Rock Bottom Girl: A Small Town Romantic Comedy Audible Audiobook – Unabridged

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 28,320 ratings

"You may be faking the relationship, but you're not faking the orgasms."

Downsized, broke, and dumped, 38-year-old Marley sneaks home to her childhood bedroom in the town she couldn't wait to escape 20 years ago. Not much has changed in Culpepper. The cool kids are still cool. Now they just own car dealerships and live in McMansions next door. Oh, and the whole town is still talking about that Homecoming she ruined her senior year.

Desperate for a new start, Marley accepts a temporary teaching position. Can the girl banned from all future Culpepper High Homecomings keep the losing-est girls soccer team in school history from killing each other and prevent carpal tunnel in a bunch of phone-clutching gym class students?

Maybe with the help of Jake Weston, high school bad boy turned sexy good guy. When the school rumor mill sends Marley to the principal's office to sign an ethics contract, the tattooed track coach, dog dad, and teacher of the year becomes her new fake boyfriend and alibi - for a price. The Deal: He'll teach her how to coach if she teaches him how to be in a relationship.

Who knew a fake boyfriend could deliver such real orgasms? But it's all temporary. The guy. The job. The team. There's too much history. Rock bottom can't turn into a foundation for happily ever after. Can it?

Warning: Story also includes a meet-puke, a bouffanted nemesis, a yard swan and donkey basketball, a teenage-orchestrated makeover, and a fake relationship that gets a little too real between the sheets.

6 stars of hysterically funny and awesome! An absolutely stellar story!

6 stars of hysterically funny and awesome! An absolutely stellar story!
This book is my happy place! Perfection. 6 stars. I cannot believe how awesomely amazing and entertaining this was. Rock Bottom Girl was everything I could have wanted and so much more. An absolutely stellar story and I had a blast reading it.Holy mother this was so hysterically funny and awesome. I loved, loved, LOVED Marley. She was so relatable and had the best internal dialogue. I highlighted the heck out of this book because there were just so many awesome things that had me smiling and laughing. She's got such a big heart and I had a major girl crush happening. And Jake. Oh, Jake. Sweet, swoon-worthy, sexy, Jake. Confident, caring, full of heart Jake. I could not get enough of him! Marley and Jake had off the chart’s chemistry. I loved the build to their fake relationship turned real, the heat (which was smokin’ hot!), watching them open up and grow, and it's done in this fantastically witty way. It was everything.Marley and Jake are amazing, yes, but there is so much more. It's all these great characters in their community. It was this fantastic, eclectic, well-rounded group with memorable and distinct personalities. Marley’s parents, the soccer girls, her best friend Vicky, even high school bullies and nemesis’s. People coming together, opening up, sharing, and growing up. There were so many funny scenes and important bonding moments. There were just so many really great things happening. Yes, I was laughing my butt off but I could also feel Marley’s emotion and so got her. There was so much evolution for these characters, it really was a wonderful thing to read and be a part of.The writing was stellar. The flow, the build, the descriptions, the humor. I loved the timing of learning what happened in their past. I pretty much turned the page like a madwoman wanting to know all the things. So, obviously, I loved this down to my core. It made me feel all kinds of gushy and happy. This was everything. One of my FAVORITE books of the year!

As a lifelong resident of Lancaster County, PA, reading this book was so delightful in a way that literally every other book I’ve read about my hometown has lacked. As a rule, I tend to stay away from books set in LancCo because the cringe factor is palpable (especially those Amish romance and wannabe trad wife books written by women who’ve never lived here—blech). However, Lucy Score did this place justice in a big way. Her Lancaster references and descriptions were freakishly accurate and absolutely hilarious, as usual. (I sent my sister the entire Dutch Blitz scene through tears because I was laughing so hard. We’ve had similar experiences with that accursed game and how the competition ruins friendships and families worse than Monopoly😂 and it was just so perfect. Like, *chef’s kiss* perfection.) Not to mention, I could absolutely see this entire book playing out on the backdrop of my own small town Amish country high school.

Okay so now that I’ve waxed on about my apparent hometown love, let me just say that not only does Lucy Score nail it with the setting, but my God, her characters and plot are fantastic. We all know where the story is going to eventually end up (and let’s be honest that’s part of what we love about her books), but the hi-jinks and situations the characters get into in the meantime are somehow both absolutely hilarious and entirely relatable, which is a hard thing to achieve. The banter/conversation is a 10/10 without being hokey, there’s always some hidden quirky side of the secondary characters that make them even more endearing, and maybe it’s just because I’m a 37 year old woman who had dreams of leaving her hometown behind for something bigger and better and still happily ended up here anyway (thankfully with my own wannabe bad boy with a good heart), but I loved this book so, so much. Definitely recommend.

If you love entertaining, heart-warming and funny books – this is the book for you.

I’m not usually into rom-coms but some author’s just work for me – and this author’s humor is right up my alley. Never too over the top, and without her characters being embarrassingly stupid, the humor was always just right, and the entire novel easily checked all my boxes – Rock Bottom Girl was a HIT!!

I laughed out loud – and got some strange looks from the people at the hair salon – grinned some more, and just was plain happy reading this little gem.

Rock Bottom Girl was all kinds of awesome things rolled into one.

Sports romance – Small town – Romantic Comedy – Fake Relationship.

A tattooed hero that was all kinds of yummy – but most of all as perfect as it gets. Supportive, incredibly well versed in hitting the right tone whenever needed, but still all kinds of edgy and ‘bad boy’. And one of those fictional teachers you wish were real.

A spunky and feisty heroine, down on her luck, but still retaining her humor. The perfect person to get in trouble with. She is nothing short of awesome and incredibly likable – a down to earth, humble but also a kinda real character.

And there were so many awesome supporting characters. I don’t really know where to start, Vicky, Libby, the Uncles, Amie-Jo – I could go on. Every single one brought something special to this book. And together it was one of these novels that just make you feel good. Low drama – but lot’s of fun.

4.5 stars — Well that was everything and a bowl of ice cream. Honestly? There were parts of this book that were like 10 stars, and then a few parts that were less, so I averaged and got to 4.5 rounded up…feel free to figure that one out.

But seriously. I can’t tell you how much some parts of this book freaking delighted me. I laughed and laughed, and I didn’t even care if anything was over the top, because it didn’t feel over the top in a shameless looking for laughs way, it just honestly did make me laugh. I’m not sure if that makes sense, but I have a very specific tolerance for these things, and this one did not trip that switch. I was just having so much fun, I wanted more and more and more. The cast of characters was delightful. They were quirky and crazy and endearing and PERFECT. I never talk about the secondary characters first, but honestly? They played such an integral role in Marley and Jake’s lives that you can’t NOT talk about them. I even appreciated Amie Jo in a weird way! I mean, wait what?

Marley was someone I simultaneously adored and wanted to smack on a frequent basis. I understood her to a degree, and I loved that through her we could see someone who internalized high school awfulness to the nth degree…and I guess I’m relieved that I didn’t do that. She focused so much on the negatives, that she completely glossed over everything good. She took FOREVER to figure things out, and I’m not sure I quite understand the depths of the kind of complex she must have had. That would be the part that was less for me, and prevented a full 5 stars. She just took slightly too long, and I felt for all the people who got hurt while she was focusing on the wrong things.

But on the other side of it, we have this story with all these amazing wins! We got to see how one person could make such a difference without even realizing it, and I loved every single step forward she had with both her team and the students (and even old nemesises). It was a super feel good story in that way. I loved how at the same time all of those people were teaching *her* things about herself, and helping her grow as a person…especially her girls.

And then there’s Jake. I loved that he was this seemingly god-like guy, but he was wholeheartedly not perfect…and not perfect in not great ways (especially the slobbiness). I love when characters get flaws to bring them down to earth and make them not too good to be true. Normally I like a 50-50 split with dual POV, but the off-balance worked really well in this story because it was mostly a growth story for Marley, but we still got to enjoy things from Jake’s side too. I couldn’t imagine this story without those occasional chapters from him. I adored him, and particularly adored the way he loved Marley. He was fun, caring, unapologetically overconfident…I don’t even know how to quantify him.

And they were fire together. They made me laugh, they gave me amazing chemistry, they just had me swooning over the way they fit with one another.

There were so many amazingly fun moments in this book that I’m never going to forget, and I can wholeheartedly see this book being added to my reread pile whenever I need a pick me up. I love it when a highly recommended book ends up actually being a match — it’s so freaking satisfying.

Lucy Score is quickly becoming my favorite feel-good author. This particular story is one everyone can relate to! So clever and funny, romantic and tragic, no one could read this and not fall for Marley and Jake, their families and team. I nearly stayed up all night to finish it, but it's over 500 pages, and I work, so... But for a person like me, who's fluent in sarcasm and TV sit-com wit, every page is a joy! No spoilers from me! You'll just have to read it!

🇺🇸 This book was a surprise. I liked the cover, the blurb seemed interesting and from the second page on I was laughing.

It’s a realistic story, with funny characters that experiment feelings and situations that at some point everyone has felt. And even if it’s full of humor, it also shows the way women can be towards other sisters. The importance of communication, the power of sorority and to always change perspective are the main things this book gave me.

    It’s funny, interesting and original.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect high school/ small town story 🥰 Don’t be put off by the 500+ pages 😉

This is the first book I’ve read by this author and i loved it. It was a mix of YA and chic lit. I would say it’s a grown up YA book which I found really special and unique. I’ve never read a story like this before as so many authors struggle to get the writing right when they switch from a teenager to an adult character but Lucy Score got it just right 👍.

If I’m being honest I was a little worried that I’d give up half way through especially with the book being 500+ pages but it was such a page turner and so much happened that I didn’t get bored at all It was amazing ⭐️ i loved the characters they felt like friends (my favourite was Libby), the setting, the writing i cried and I laughed a lot too. Plus it had a dog in it too🐶. How could you go wrong? The s*x scenes 🍆 wow🙈😮‍💨 they are pretty explicit but come across respectful and funny too and are only in the middle of the book. I wouldn’t change anything about this book 🥰

I also loved the bonus wedding chapter that you get by tapping on a link from the kindle version of the story.

Bye, 👋 I’m off to order the rest of Lucy Scores books now ….

This is the first Lucy Score book I've read. It won't be the last. It covered a topic which a lot of people deal with. Mean spirited, unkind people that make others miserable. It was side-splitting funny with great dialogue. I loved the characters of Jake and Marley. How Jake showed Marley how great she was he encouraged her to believe in herself and helped give her self confidence. I loved how she encouraged her girls to fight and helped them to be kind and show team spirit. Thoroughly enjoyed this book.
