The Thief and the Historian: A YA Epic Fantasy Adventure (The Runetree Chronicles Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 56 ratings

A gifted Thief and a mysterious Historian.
A dangerous journey that will change their lives forever.

Aeda is a Thief with twice the skill of the other Thieves, but not even she expects to get caught by her latest mark.

Gieral, from the legendary order of Historians, does not take favorably to having her rune essences stolen. She uses a runeword to bind Aeda to her, and together they set off for the Great Library where Aeda will be judged for her actions.

Suddenly, Aeda is thrown into a strange new world of malevolent spirits, perilous landscapes, and terrifying beasts.

Having spent her life confined to the coastal city of Biersport, stealing to survive, Aeda is uncertain if the mysterious Historian is her captor or her rescuer.

She finds herself questioning where she truly belongs, especially when she is drawn into investigating the unexplained disappearances of several Historians.

But even if Aeda somehow survives the dangerous journey and her judgement, can she ever hope to become more than a Thief?

The Thief and the Historian is the first of four books in The Runetree Chronicles, an epic series about belonging and the power of history for young adult fantasy readers who love going on spellbinding adventures.

Review

"The Thief and the Historian is a riveting hero's adventure which includes mystery, picturesque landscapes, and a journey filled with magic and beasts. The two main characters guide the way for the adventure, while delivering impactful sentiments about individuality and belonging. Aeda emerges as realistically conflicted in her role as a thief; her growth throughout the tale is intriguing and authentic. Corbett crafts a rich, well-established fantasy realm with a fascinating central premise. The lessons throughout the novel are thoughtfully considered, while fast-paced adventure will keep readers turning the pages." - The BookLife Prize

"A thrill-a-page, fantasy saga with a compelling young protagonist to root for. A FINALIST and highly recommended!" -

About the Author

Brendan Corbett grew up in a military family, always on the move. Books, particularly fantasy, were both stabilizing and the ultimate escape, companions to other worlds that could journey with him even when friends could not. As an adult his career turned away from the arts, though a wide range of experiences have brought him back to his love of writing.
He now resides in Oregon with his wife, son, dog and two kittens. While writing consumes much of his time, you might also find him at one of his ridiculous list of hobbies, including cooking, gardening, hiking, gaming, archery, volunteering, and woodworking.

This is the first book of Brendan Corbett’s I’ve read, but it won’t be the last! Wonderfully descriptive but not overdone prose, fascinating characters, and imaginative cultures and peoples are some of the reasons this book was so hard to put down. Add the action and unpredictable twists and turns, and you have a book well worth reading!

"The Thief and the Historian" by Brendan Corbett is a book that takes readers on an exciting journey through the eyes of Aeda, a masterful thief confined to the coastal city of Biersport. From the very beginning, I found Aeda's character to be highly developed. Her internal conflict and yearning for something beyond her life of theft create a compelling character who is easy to like and support. I particularly enjoyed the way Corbett vividly detailed Biersport, painting the picture of a city that is filled with both beauty and danger. This book is well-paced, balancing action-packed sequences with moments of introspection. Aeda's encounters with terrifying beasts and the unraveling of ancient mysteries keep the tension high, while her personal journey towards self-discovery adds emotional depth. The story raises thought-provoking questions about destiny, choice, and the power of history, making it more than just a simple adventure tale.

Overall, I found this novel to be a spellbinding tale that did a fabulous job of blending adventure, fantasy, and self-discovery. Aeda's journey from a reluctant thief to a heroine confronting ancient mysteries is both thrilling and moving. If you are a fan of fantasy and adventure, you will enjoy this book. I'll definitely plan on checking out the next book of the series.

We follow Aeda and Gieral through their adventures from Biersport, the Library, to the land of the dokkaebis in this first novel. Each location and character is extensively described with particular attention paid to the landscape. I often paused just to drink in images of the surroundings. The author has managed to pack in several events in just 200+ pages, making this an easy read. I would recommend this to any of your fellow fantasy/sci-fi enthusiasts and eagerly await the next books in this series.
