The Runespeaker (The Runetree Chronicles Book 3) Kindle Edition

4.2 out of 5 stars 14 ratings

Driven by vengeance, Aeda pursues the treacherous Runespeaker.
If she fails to stop her foe, there may be deadly consequences for all Historians.

Though Aeda is used to standing up for herself, she has never before been so alone.

Without the aid of Gieral, Aeda searches for the Runespeaker - the mysterious yet powerful figure she believes to be at the center of the plot of the disappearing Historians.

Knowing her foe is stronger than she is, Aeda seeks to gain the ability to runespeak herself. Yet the path to gain this near-forgotten skill is fraught with dangers that none can prepare for.

Bolstered with the support of unexpected companions she gathers in her search, Aeda scours the Known Lands for any trace of the elusive Runespeaker, from the forested Spriggan city of Tohreia to the coastal city of Pulkiimo, home to the Sea Nymphs.

Will Aeda’s determination lead her to the Runespeaker? Will she gain the power she needs to stop this threat to the Historians?

The Runespeaker is the third of four books in The Runetree Chronicles, an epic series about belonging and the power of history for young adult fantasy readers who love going on spellbinding adventures.

About the Author

Brendan Corbett grew up in a military family, always on the move. Books, particularly fantasy, were both stabilizing and the ultimate escape, companions to other worlds that could journey with him even when friends could not. As an adult his career turned away from the arts, though a wide range of experiences have brought him back to his love of writing.
He now resides in Oregon with his wife, son, dog and kitten. While writing consumes much of his time, you might also find him at one of his ridiculous list of hobbies, including cooking, gardening, hiking, gaming, archery, volunteering, and woodworking.

After her mentor Gieral’s abrupt and untimely death, Aeda is set adrift, untethered as she navigates her fledgling and newly independent existence as a lost Historian’s apprentice. Swallowing her grief, Aeda reluctantly accepts her ascendance into the role of a full Historian despite not feeling ready for the responsibilities that come with her new title. Aeda is determined to put a stop to the nefarious and elusive Runespeaker who is killing Historians across the land, but to do so she must learn both the dangerous art of Runespeaking and how to coexist with other people who can support her mission. Neither task is easy, and Aeda must begin to trust herself and her new companions in order to survive.

This continuation of the Runetree Chronicles series picks up shortly after the conclusion of the previous installment, when both readers and Aeda are grieving the loss of Gieral. Supportive friends and allies help Aeda to find her way back to the light, even though it is difficult for her to do so. Excellent writing and good pacing guide readers through the trials that prepare Aeda to encounter the Runespeaker, and it is endearing just how similar Aeda’s personality is to that which Gieral had upon first taking Aeda under her wing.

Throughout this novel, Aeda is forced to step outside of her comfort zone, finding new ways to trust in her own abilities even as seemingly insurmountable obstacles rise before her. Aeda’s party grows in size against her will, incorporating companions who can support her mission despite her preference to progress on her own. The inclusion of additional voices adds depth to the storytelling, especially as each new character enhances the potential of their mission. Open to a sequel, this book is an engaging continuation to the series, and it offers a strong platform from which Aeda can grow and develop. This is a positive addition to library collections for fans of young adult fantasy adventures.

I can't believe we're only on book three, with how much has happened over the course of the last two books. Aeda has grown, and changed so much from the thief we first met, and getting to explore her world by her side has been a fun journey. Of course, the adventure isn't over yet. It was so easy to slip right back into the story, and I could feel Aeda's varied emotions just flow right off the page and into my heart. I'll avoid spoilers, but there were moments my heart just ached for her. Corbett's descriptions are vivid, and the action scenes are so well done they'll get your heart racing as you rapidly read each line, wondering what the outcome will be. There's a greater sense of urgency now more than ever to stop the Runespeaker before more historians lose their lives, and the tension is kept up throughout, with just enough twists that you can never be completely sure what's going to happen next. I do recommend starting this series from book one, or you'll miss out on a lot of world and character building. If you enjoy fantasy adventures that will take you on an unforgettable journey with characters that will find their way into your heart, then this is the series for you.
