Racing across the Known Lands with her companions in tow, Aeda investigates every possible lead as to who is behind the disappearances - and why they targeted Historians.

From the remote village of Chydwen and its nefarious past to the city of the Shail, a long-forgotten people living beneath frozen mountains, Aeda is pushed to the brink of desperation.

About the Author

Brendan Corbett grew up in a military family, always on the move. Books, particularly fantasy, were both stabilizing and the ultimate escape, companions to other worlds that could journey with him even when friends could not. As an adult his career turned away from the arts, though a wide range of experiences have brought him back to his love of writing.
He now resides in Oregon with his wife, son, dog and kitten. While writing consumes much of his time, you might also find him at one of his ridiculous list of hobbies, including cooking, gardening, hiking, gaming, archery, volunteering, and woodworking.

After reading the first book in the series, I was hooked and now have finished this volume. A fine tale, a creative and well-thought out world, I was drawn in to the finish.

Since the death of her mentor Gieral, Aeda has been struggling to anchor herself in the wider world. As a Historian, she is generally respected and revered, but her inner turmoil over the murders of Historians across the Known Lands consumes her. Despite her best efforts, the vast majority of the remaining Historians want nothing to do with Aeda’s mission, so she teams up with a select group of characters to uncover the truths of the murders on their own. Aeda and her companions must unite to face unprecedented challenges both in the expanse of the Known Lands and within themselves in order to ensure the safety of Historians for generations to come.

This finale of the Runetree Chronicles series begins not long after the previous book ends, and it does an excellent job of immersing readers back into Aeda’s fractured world. Familiar faces are woven into the narrative, and the nostalgia of rediscovering Aeda’s reality and her mission is palpable. The engaging and descriptive writing is consistent with the other books in this series, and readers will appreciate the opportunity to observe as Aeda grows more into the Historian and leader Gieral was training her to become.

It is important that readers are familiar with the rest of the series before beginning this book, but because the world building is so well crafted in the preceding novels, it feels as though no time has passed between completing those installments and beginning this one. Fans of fantasy storytelling will fall easily for Aeda and her plight, and this collection of novels is accessible to both young adults and older readers alike. An excellent conclusion to the series, this book finishes in a tone that is both satisfying and cathartic. This is a positive addition to library fantasy collections for young adult readers and up.

It’s a little surreal to think I’ve just finished reading the last installment in The Runetree Chronicles. I’ve been enamored with it since book one, and it’s a little bittersweet to reach the end of this epic fantasy adventure series. Corbett wastes no time dropping you back into the expertly crafted world Aeda inhabits. It was like walking through a portal to meet up with what feels like an old friend. Although this is the final installment, there’s no shortage of tension, twists, and heart-racing action. You do need to read the first three books, or you’re going to feel very lost, just a heads-up. I was so hooked from the first chapter, it was frustrating to set down when real life duties called. I don’t want to give any spoilers, but as sad as I was to reach the end, I thought it was done very well. I would love to spend more time in the world, but I’ll just have to hope for spin-offs!

Got a bit tedious but otherwise still a good read.
