Albert Smith's Culinary Capers - The First Five Books (Albert Smith's Culinary Capers - the Five Book Sets 1) Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 2,549 ratings

Baking. It can get a guy killed.

‘When Steve Higgs writes, he hits it out of the park. I find myself laughing out loud and often.’

When a retired detective and a former police dog set out on a culinary tour of the British Isles, they dream of tasty treats and delicious bakes …

… what they find is mystery, mayhem, and murder.

Albert’s investigator’s brain sees things ordinary people might not, and his dog, Rex Harrison, cannot understand why the humans are struggling to solve each mystery. He can already smell the answer – it’s right before their noses.

Together they lend their skills to help the people they meet, but unwittingly they’ve discovered a master criminal at work, and what started out as a bit of fun, is getting deadlier with each new place they visit.

If you are a fan of gentle, funny mystery books this series is sure to please. Grab a boxed set now and save a packet on buying them individually.

Praise for Rex & Albert:
‘This series has it all; everything I want in a story and series ... humour, suspense, and colourful characters. It’s one of my top all-time favourite series.’
'I so enjoyed this wonderfully written tale of a retired detective and his smart if independent canine companion. From the kindly interactions of Albert to the sneaky actions of his pup, the story is nonstop. I could not easily put this book down. I read far into the night.'
'Wow, this book was hard to put down. The characters come to life, you become engaged in their adventures.'
'This book is laugh out loud funny. Rex Harrison definitely steals the show. This is now my favorite author!'
'This book was such a delight to read! An aged detective on a culinary road trip finds murder, friends and a little too much excitement with his not so obedient washed out police dog. Although fast-paced the author has humor laced throughout the book that will have you laughing out loud!

When Steve Higgs wrote his debut novel, Paranormal Nonsense, he was a captain in the British Army. He would like to pretend that he had one of those careers that must be blacked out and generally denied by the government, and that he has to change his name and move constantly because he is still on the watch list in several countries. In truth, though, he started out as a mechanic - not like Jason Statham in the film by that name, sneaking around as a hitman, but more like one of those sleazy guys who charges a fortune and keeps your car for a week even though the only thing you went in for was a squeaky door hinge.

At school, he was largely disinterested in all subjects except creative writing, for which he won his first prize at the age of ten. However, calling it the first prize he won suggests that there were other prizes, which is not the case. Awards may yet come, but in the meantime, he enjoys writing mystery and thriller novels and claims to have more than a hundred books forming a restless queue in his mind because they are desperate to be written.

Now retired from the military, he lives in southeast England with a duo of lazy sausage dogs. Surrounded by rolling hills, brooding castles, and vineyards, he doubts he'll ever leave, the beer is just too good.

Alfred Smith, a retired elderly policeman and his dog, Rex Harrison, are on a bucket list trip. Alfred's goal is to visit towns famous for certain foods such as Yorkshire Pudding and Stilton Cheese. He would also like to learn how to cook some of these wonderful foods. His three grown children worry sbout the old man but seem unable to stop his ramblings. Add to this Alfred's and Rex's ptoclivity for falling into mysteries and murders in every village they visit. Rex uses his excellent nose to find clues but cannot make his human understand what'a going on. Along with tbe mysteries is a parade of truly interesting characters and a traditional recipe at the end of each chapter. Good reading.

In this book, a retired high ranking police officer and his extra large German Shepherd are solving crimes and righting wrongs while learning to cook regional dishes. These books are so well written and have wonderful funny moments, mostly to do with a big smart dog doing what big smart dogs do. Try this series, you won’t want to stop.

At first I wasn't sure if I could get into the story of Albert and his dog Rex. But once I took a few bites of the first story, I wanted to eat it all up. Seriously though, Albert and Rex are a fun pair of sleuths.
Each mystery is very entertaining and I learn more about the main character and British food too.
    Enjoy.

Enjoyed this book. All of them have been entertaining. The last one even more so Rex Harrison has really performed I think I could say an oscar-winning performance in this last book even though he's a dog. Albert's claim that he's a service animal is not believable to anybody who has ever being around Rex . Even though he was thrown out of the police force for disciplinary problems that is the very quality that makes Rex stand out amongst the rest, he is unique . Rex is a great companion and a very entertaining sidekick. The situations that Rex gets into in this book made me laugh out loud so many times, some with tears of joy. All this and Albert still got his man. This is a great series that proves a discarded dog and his somewhat elderly owner are still a useful part of Society and are still able to have fun .

The premise of this series is truly interesting! Some of the scenes depicting Rex's adventures are well written and as arresting as the main plot itself. The dog's frustration as he tries to communicate with his human is hilarious and something to think about. The character of Rex is as engaging as that of Albert Smith, if not more.
