Roll with the Punches Kindle Edition

3.9 out of 5 stars 112 ratings

A rollicking, funny chick lit mystery/adventure, full of fun and light romance.
Falling is extra hard on tall people, like Rhonda Hamilton: the bone breakage, the bruises, the ignominy of it all. And Rhonda’s falling, hard. First, how in the heck can the latest novel published by a nationally bestselling author be a close twin to the manuscript Rhonda has just finished writing and has barely started marketing to agents? Plus, why is Dad suddenly acting so odd: storing milk in the garage and throwing away Rhonda’s clothes?
Some goofy roller derby girls add a bludgeon of crazy to Rhonda’s hunt for the book thief, and two drool-worthy guys offer to help with Dad—guys Rhonda would gladly fall for, if her life weren’t careening madly between Dad’s bizarre antics, some treacherous derby bouts, a wild burlesque fundraiser, and the odd mudslide and house demolition. Only one thing is sure: if she wants to nail the wily plagiarist and keep Dad safe, Rhonda had better stay up on her skates to avoid a very big fall.

Review

"Roll with the Punches works on so many different levels that it's awfully hard to categorize it under any single genre. The mystery of the purloined manuscript and the sleuthing efforts of Rhonda, her friend, Harley and the Amazon Rollergirls is first-rate, with plenty of red herrings and an unpredictable ending. Rhonda's adventures in the roller derby world are marvelous as is her love of being active, strong and athletic -- she makes a fabulous role model for young women. The issue of aging parents and the duties that seem to fall willy-nilly on the geographically closest child is a serious one that's handled with love, humor, and respect. Finally, there's the romance, something Rhonda's not too good at, and how she resolves the sudden interest of not one, but two men. ... This is a big, warm-hearted, hilarious book that wraps the reader up within its covers and holds them there until the last page -- and that's a very good thing. Roll with the Punches is most highly recommended." ~ Jack Magnus for Reader's Favorite"I had tears rolling down my cheeks from laughing so much! Want your life to seem quiet and sedate, no matter what? Check out Amy Gettinger's in-your-face, completely irreverent take on light-hearted romance and the struggles of a single woman caught between her own life and those she cares for." ~ Dianne Bylo, Tome Tender Blogger

Roll with the Punches is a wonderful, heroic, filled with laughter, love, frustration, and honesty. Thank you Amy Gettinger for sharing page after page of comedy, honesty, and the heartbreaking truth that goes along with aging and caring for our aging parents. Rhonda is an all in your face kinda girl, who can Roll with the Punches with the best of em, as she struggles to figure out who could have possibly stolen her manuscript before the ink is dry, and written a best selling book, finding out her father , who is larger than life is in the early stages of dementia, her mother not wanting to accept what is happening to her other half. Roll with the Punches is written beautifully, I could appreciate her fathers sense of humor, he reminded me so much of my own grandfather, so much that they could be brothers with their quirky one liners and hilarious songs. I laughed so much, be sure to have a box of Kleenex or a roll of paper towels, you will need them. Amy has a way of making you feel like you personally know the characters and putting you right in the moment with Rhonda. This is a must read book for all. Thank you Amy Gettinger for all of the laughter and the tears.

This book is humorous with some romance. I love all of the roller derby scenes. Especially the stage names of the skaters. I used to watch roller derby in the early 1970’s when it was on tv Saturday mornings. Great entertainment.

I did not want to put this book down. I read it from title page to the end over the course of a day and a half. Rhonda had something that I, and many other women could relate to in one way or another throughout the book. I absolutely loved the Roller Derby scenes as well as how she handled everything thing that was thrown at her. Being Fresh Meat isn't easy, and it was great fun to read about it from someone else's eyes. The derby girls were superbly written. Dealing with a parent(s) with dementia isn't easy, and it was great to get to laugh about about something that is so very hard to go through. She made it so perfectly real in such a wonderful way that chose a way to look at such a horrible situation and see the humor, the affection and the total frustration. Then you have the wonderfully imperfect heroine. Thank Ms. Gettinger, for a heroine that most of us can either relate to or aspire to be someday. Honestly I laughed myself silly through most of the book, usually out loud accompanied by weird looks from my husband, and then the cat!

Amy Gettinger’s, “Roll with the Punches” is a fun and easy read. It is a romance, a mystery with a twist and a foray into roller derby. The background of dealing with a parent’s dementia was handled in a loving but lighthearted manner. There are laugh out loud moments and moments when you see yourself in the characters. Rhonda is like most of us. She loves her family but has too much to do and too little time to do it and feels torn between her parent’s needs and her desire to “have a life”. I love how Rhonda dealt with her problems in a no holds barred manner, finds love with Mr. Right instead of the slick good looking Mr. Wrong and comes to terms with her parent’s situation. I’m looking forward to reading more from Amy Gettinger.

A most amusing story. I chose it originally because of the writing and publishing of a book since I have many friends who do this. Then I got hooked by the use of the roller derby and the Alzheimer's of the parents (had just finished reading Still Alice) I needed A fun book to read and this most definitely got the bill :)

Sorry, but couldn't finish. Not my cup of tea.

I thorouhly enjoyed this antic tale of a goofy heroine with heart, struggling with a daughter's worst nightmare while yearning for true love. The characters are well-drawn, flawed, and memorable. If Stephanie Plum could rollerblade, she still wouldn't be half as gutsy or entertaining as Rhonda. It's particularly refreshing that the main characters and the love interest are not flawlessly beautiful but manage to be smart, creative, sexy and desirable without physical perfection.
