Raising Hell: A Novel Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 604 ratings

"I opened it and read the first paragraph and then the first page and got halfway through the book before realizing I got sucked into the story! I respect him on a whole other level now because his character development (and hilarious humor) kept this girl's attention."
- Colleen Hoover, #1 New York Times bestselling author of "It Ends With Us"

Life as a party-loving bartender is all I know—until my parents' sudden death forces me into their posh, gated community to raise my eleven-year-old sister Helen. My sarcasm and penchant for chaos makes for a disastrous mix while I play the role of a "responsible guardian", especially when Hel is facing her own battles at her fancy private school.

Enter Charlie: Hel's stunningly cute and infuriatingly straight-laced math teacher, who gets under my skin in all the right ways. Despite a rocky start, sparks fly, and I find myself irresistibly drawn to him, leaving me questioning everything I thought I long ago concluded about love and why it's not for me.

With my annoyingly perfect older brother ready to swoop in and take over, I'm torn between clinging to my old life and embracing the unexpected stability I've found with Hel and Charlie. But will I have the courage to let love in, or will my fears push them both away?

RAISING HELL is a heartwarming, darkly humorous tale of family, love, and the unexpected ways life can change us, written by USA Today bestselling author Daryl Banner ("When I See You Again" & the Spruce Texas series)

"Delightfully sassy and self-deprecating yet deeply emotional and sexy, Raising Hell gets five big, shiny stars, a few martini glasses, and at least one feather boa from me."
- BB Easton, bestselling author of "44 Chapters About 4 Men", upon which Netflix's Sex/Life was based.

"I opened it and read the first paragraph and then the first page and got halfway through the book before realizing I got sucked into the story!
I respect him on a whole other level now because his character development (and hilarious humor) kept this girl's attention."

- Colleen Hoover, #1 New York Times Bestselling Author

"This story is wonderful. It's fresh, original and different from the same ole. I highly recommend it."
- Kindle Alexander, Bestselling Gay Romance Author

"I've been waiting to read this story and Daryl Banner did not disappoint!
If you love sassy mixed with a whole lot of sexy... then you'll love Raising Hell!"
- Hilary Storm, USA Today Bestselling Author

"In Raising Hell, Daryl takes you on a wild ride with a very anti-hero, Mathew.
I was pretty sure I hated Mathew and then right before my eyes I saw him changing
and becoming someone I was invested in - someone with faults and a past - someone human.
It might just be one of my favorite Daryl Banner books to date."

- Jordan Marie, USA Today Bestselling Author

"If David Sedaris and I had a love child (which would take copious amounts of alcohol and blindfolding on his part) the result would be this book.
Delightfully sassy and self-deprecating yet deeply emotional and sexy, Raising Hell gets five big, shiny stars, a few martini glasses,
and at least one feather boa from me."

- BB Easton, Bestselling Author of the 44 Chapters About 4 Men Series

"This book was a magical mess. It's the kind they turn into a movie, even though obviously the book is better.
I want to watch the movie. A cult classic and a re-read for sure."

- Desiree Lafawn, Contemporary Romance Author

What do you get when you mix a reprehensible reprobate and the sweet shy teacher? A delicious slow burn romance!! Matthew is a playboy, and borderline addict. When he learns his parents have died and he is expected to take over caring for his younger sister he is understandably upset. He is intrigued by one of her teachers, Charlie.

Matthew should not be a likable guy. However the way the book is written you see the kernels of goodness. He is out, proud, and unapologetic. Charlie is the perfect foil - he wants to be bad but is reluctant.

I loved the transformation of the character. His little sister was adorable and precocious in a charming way. Matthew’s best friend Glenn is great comic relief (the drag queen names were comic genius). Superbly written and hot as heck. I loved the entire book!!

I’ve read quite a number of Daryl’s books, much enjoying especially the early shorter ones for their fine connection of erotic lust with affection and (maybe) love. Then there were a few (they seemed to have been written very quickly) that didn’t “grab me” at all, followed by a return to the “Lust plus Love” quality.
Now this is a longer, more comprehensive gay novel, and three-quarters the way in I was saying, “fun, funny, erotic in some unusual scenes = “Five, for sure.” Then my mood (and assessment) changed when I came to what seemed an overly-contrived effort to change the shadows of the past—to remake the “Hero’s” miserable status/reputation with his parents (primarily mother) to suggest a kind of “NEVER SPOKEN” approval of her son’s’ life choices. It doesn’t work for me at all—makes the story incongruent. My reading of the early part of the story contains little or nothing to make “the switch” believable. Feels fake. And the issue (independence) is used to deal with the younger sibling’s crucial decision about lifestyles WHILE the focus of the discussions is laid upon “What would MOTHER want me to do?”
Daryl makes everything turn out good, of course - - maybe a little much. There’s plenty to enjoy in the story and perhaps many will not be “hung up” by the incongruity that bothered me.

This pulled at my heart. I normally prefer DOV but that’s ok this was great. Mathew’s journey to adulthood was beautiful. The way he navigated trying to be the guardian to Hell and find himself was so beautiful written. Charlie and Mathews relationship is so perfectly done. I love the low angst and I love that Charlie never waiver on being w Mathew even at the expense of his job. I cried when Helen chose to go w Wesley. I knew it couldn’t end like that but it still broke my heads at Mathew begged her to chose him. The epilogue chefs kisses. Thank you. I love and I mean love a good epilogue where I see how everyone is. It’s was so good.

I thought I would like this book more because it was rated so high but it was just okay. I had a really hard time liking the MC, I get he had to grow as a person and he did change somewhat through the story and there were moments that were funny that I liked but just not enough. I'm glad I did not pay for this book and got it on kindle unlimited.

GREAT book. A FUNNY book. And I LOVE this authors writing and MM. This book is very different than what you usually get from this author. Not bad, different. The main man has a crazy ridiculous, life. And while, absolutely, can be very real. For me, it was hard to stay with him because of it. It is interesting watching him change from a selfish drama queen to a sincere man that people come to rely on and enjoy.

Didn't like Matthew in the beginning, sort of passive agressive. Helen was also a very irritating charactor.
I guess they were supposed to be, but eventually you fall in love with both of them. Sorta tearful book at times but a beautiful outcome and ending. This author writing is outstanding.

Loved the way Darryl told this story. Matthew the wayward middle child; Wesley the goodie two shoes eldest child; and Helen the youngest ice queen. Throw in a few drag queens and Charlie the maths teacher and you get a wonderful tale leading to so many happy ever after endings

I am a huge fan of Daryl Banner's work and this book is the best one yet. The whole story, characters and all is absolutely awesome. It's funny. It's sweet. It's full of angst. Altogether it is freakin awesome wrapped up in a bow.
Seen and told through Mathews eyes it is an engaging story that will keep you enthralled from beginning to end.
    Absolutely recommended.

I received an ARC of this book from the author BUT as soon as it was released I bought a copy. Yes,I loved it that much.
I always have high expectations when I start a new Daryl Banner book, and this book did not disappoint.

Mathew is a lost soul, alcohol and drugs his constant companion, who becomes guardian of his young sister Helen when they tragically lose their parents. Mathew was not ready nor did he welcome this commitment. When he met Helen's HOT maths teacher Charlie, everything changed.

This is a love story from unexpected places as Mathew and Charlie navigate the challenges life delivers them, and deliver them it did. Everything from personal struggles with fear, denial, friendships, family, love, acceptance and HAWT sex, at the same time they face external struggles with homophobia and judgement.

I felt every emotion while reading this book, from laughing out loud to quietly sobbing and everything in between. i was on this journey with Mathew and Charlie.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves love. I couldn't put it down and didn't get much sleep until I finished it.

Now I want ice cream and sprinkles (read it and you will understand)
