The Rancher’s Second Chance Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 583 ratings

Samantha Jenson likes things ordered. She’s managed to carefully plot out her life, creating lists along the way to keep her on track: Leave small town. No more cowboys—especially him. Get educated. Don’t even think about him. Become a professor. So far, she’s put a check in every box but the last.

When her family ranch in Texas goes to her after the death of her father and brother, she’s forced to return home to put things in order and to make sure the property doesn’t get into the hands of her shady cousin. Enter Cole Baker. Tough, hard, distant. Sexy. The kind of guy you’d want standing between you and an attacking bear. Or in your bed. He’s definitely not on Sammie’s to-do list. But when the two of them are thrown together to save the ranch, her list begins to look not quite so important.

No one had ever mistaken Cole for one of the good guys. In and out of trouble his whole life, his one brush with respectability came during the brief time he and Sammie dated in high school. Now, fresh out of the army, he finds himself suddenly navigating the world of single parenthood and is desperate to give his son stability. He needs a job and a place to stay, so when Sammie offers him the role of running the ranch, he swallows his pride and agrees.

All his life he’s let down everyone he loved, so he’ll try to focus on the job, and definitely not think about how beautiful Sammie is, how goddamn cute all her lists are or how good she is with his son. It’ll only end in heartbreak, just like before… right?

This novel contains sexual content and profanity.

Another great book by Mary Sue Jackson/Leslie North. Thoroughly enjoyed reading this contemporary romance as the story kept my interest to the very end. Cole recently getting out of the army to raise his two year old son, a single father and Sammie inheriting the ranch after her father’s death. The ranch is failing and she hires Cole to help her turn the ranch profitable. Sammie and Cole have a past history as they dated in high school. The story is well written with interesting characters that are easy to relate to, including chemistry and heartwarming moments between the two of them. Will they be able to turn the failing ranch around so Sammie’s cousins does not get it. Will Cole and Sammie get their HEA. If love romance stories I recommend reading this book.

Received an ARC for a voluntary honest review.

The Rancher’s Second Chance by Mary Sue Jackson is a well written second chance romance with a bit of denial throughout. Truly the antagonist(s) in this book are the characters themselves with a bit of the plot thrown in for good measure.
Cole and Sammie have a past that they both seem to be running from for different reasons, however one thing they have in common is what seems like esteem issues. Both negative talk to themselves while trying to build the other up.
I totally fell for Cole. Not only is he alpha and super sexy, he’s also former military, a cowboy and the single dad of a toddler! Dreamy sigh. Sammie is equally hot in her own right with her determination, super smart, ambition, kindness, warmth and heart.
Overall a very enjoyable second chance romance in which Cole, Sammie and Devon get their HEA all around.
I read an ARC of this book and voluntarily share my review.

This story will pull at your heartstrings and you will root for both of these characters to overcome their backgrounds as they grow into being the people they truly are at heart, and for the little boy who needs them both so much. Throw in a nasty, scheming relative out to get what he wants in any way he can and you won't be able to stop reading until the last page!

Cole has a way with the opposite sex and a military man on the top it off hard working with those strong shoulders

This is the story of Sammie, Cole and Cole's adorable son Devon. While I enjoyed it, there was nothing memorable about it. Cole is a good guy, devoted Dad, former soldier and the person who agreed to help Sammie repair and keep her ranch. Sammie is the highly educated college professor who has to decide whether to follow her head or her heart. In the background there are stereotypical judgmental, meddling family members and town folk. I struggled with Richard's 180-degree turn on how he felt about Cole based on a 30-second conversation that he (Richard) overheard. Cole apparently made a couple of poor decisions in his distant past and several people held those against him but, quite frankly, it never sounded like he really did anything bad.

The heat was not all that hot although there was one scorching scene with accompanying talk. Again, while I enjoyed it, I would have enjoyed it more without Sammie's almost constant vacillation and the lack of depth with the very obvious bad guy saboteur.

I enjoyed this contemporary second chance cowboy romance that kept me entertained and engaged from beginning to end with great characters and an interesting story that kept me on an emotional roller coaster and included lots of drama and heartwarming romance. I really liked the undeniable chemistry between Sammie Jensen and Cole Baker who is now a single dad to two-year-old Devon when she offers him the job of running her failing Bitter Creek Ranch when they both return to their hometown of Hope Springs, Texas. This is the first book I have read by Mary Sue Jackson and I hope to read more by this talented author. Samantha comes back to her hometown when she inherits the family ranch. Not knowing what she's going to do with it she goes to talk with the bank about the finances of it. Cole is back in town with his son trying to find a job or get a loan to buy a place of his own. When Sammie sees him she walks over to him and asks if he can meet with her that she has an offer that will solve both of their problems. Sammie and Cole haven't seen or spoken to each other since they broke up before she left for college. So Cole is somewhat wary of what she wants with him. When she explains that he would have room and board plus a wage if he help her with the ranch he accepted because his options were limited. Sparks fly between them and even though they tried to keep things platonic between them since she wasn't planning on staying there. They end up giving into temptation and sleep together. When Cole sees how attached his son is becoming to her he starts to pull away and tells her it would be best if she didn't pick up his son from daycare anymore too. When she got told they needed her sooner for her teaching job she accepted it and starts planning to leave. Yet in her heart she is hoping that Cole will ask her to stay. Will Cole see that they are meant to be a family and ask her to stay?

This is a great story that will captivate you from beginning to end. The chemistry between them is blazing hot. This is a well written and very entertaining story. I would recommend this book to any book lover.

They left town to peruse their lives but ended up back in their hometown due to certain circumstances.
