- Reviewed in the United States on May 10, 2020This is my second read from Lumby and I am thoroughly pleased!
The good:
Rats gives the reader a great compact story with the perfect amount of backstory to care about the characters while not going overboard.
The creepiness and dread plays out in a hauntingly wonderful plot and perfect ending.
The bad:
Not much to complain about. Will read more!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 21, 2018Rats In The Loft by Mark Lumby, author of Lord of the Harvest and Bag of Buttons, is such a descriptive story, I felt like I was in the attic with Peter...and I was terrified. The randoms sounds really creeped me out. When the mystery is finally unraveled, I was completely shocked. The final ending left me with mixed feelings. The entire story is a well-written tragedy.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 30, 2017I have always had a fear of those little doors in upper story rooms or attics since seeing the film Don't Be Afraid of the Dark. Mark Lumby reminds me why I have those fears with this short story. It's hard not to spoil it so the most I'll say is that it has shades of The Changeling, my favorite movie in the genre.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 14, 2018A well written story of things that hide in dark places. A look at our fears, but also the depths to which we can sink. Really rats and spiders in the loft are the least of our worries. This story was a good read.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 13, 2017Rats in the Loft is a dark horror tale with a light but ominous beginning. The suspense builds in waves as the story does a slow reveal of horrific events. But don’t be fooled, because things aren’t as they seem. Just when you think you have all of the ugly truth, the story takes a darker turn and the horror slowly builds anew to a surprise ending.
There are some elements of the content that some viewers may find very disturbing. Although these elements are presented with care, that only makes it more disturbing. Once again, Lumby presents a work reminiscent of classic John Saul, complete with shocking ending.

A well written story of things that hide in dark places. A look at our fears, but also the depths to which we can sink. Really rats and spiders in the loft are the least of our worries. This story was a good read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Intriguing story
For short story I thought this was very well written. Good storyline and good characters. It was a quick read with a surprising, unexpected ending.

4.0 out of 5 stars Would you investigate?
A suitably creepy tale about unexplained noises coming from an attic. The new owners of the house investigate but they don't find what they think they will.
Another hit by Mr. Lumby
