About the author

K.S. Barton writes historical fiction and fantasy stories of love and adventure set in the Viking age. The author of three novels, she explores themes of family, honor, and strength all within the backdrop of Norse society. When doing research on Norse mythology for a teaching project, she discovered the Norse sagas and decided that she wanted to write fiction about Vikings. She believes there is magic in storytelling and enjoys writing about family dynamics, in explorations of love, bravery, betrayal, community, and the complex moral dilemmas that arise out of those issues. Of course, no story of Vikings would be complete without male warriors and fighting, so there is plenty of that in her books, too!
She has an M.A. in Humanities with a focus on literature and history and has always loved to learn about history through stories. She resides in sunny Southern Arizona.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 15, 2024Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseA very good story done with well researched historical details and a smattering of Norse vocab that brings the past alive.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 2, 2023Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI really loved this "side quest" book about Helgi. It's wonderful to see his journey from scared, beaten child to being a young man with compassion for the weak, and the skills to protect them. My favorite parts of the book were all the kind people who helped him along the way, his adopted family.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 12, 2022Format: PaperbackI have read the Norse Family Saga, where Helgi is a main characters, so I was intrigued by this book which expounds his upbringing and fight for survival as an escaped slave from age 5. As is the saga, it is well researched and knowledgeably written, so it transported me right into the unforgiving and harsh conditions of the Viking age. Interesting as it is, the plot felt a bit protracted, all the more as the book is only the first of a duet, so IMO it would have benefited from a good tightening or compression into one single book. That being said, a captivating read.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 30, 2022Format: KindleVerified PurchaseA fourth "can't put this book down" experience! It was fun and informative to read about our hero, Raven Boy, growing up to young manhood. After four excellent reads from KS Barton, I'm anxious for more! Thank you, from a Norwegian Eriksen!
