4.3 out of 5 stars 1,199 ratings

This hot-headed rookie needs discipline—on and off the field.

Pitcher Nico Agresta decided a long time ago he can never act on his desire for men despite a hopeless crush on his big brother's teammate Jake Fitzgerald. Nico is desperate to live up to his Italian-American family’s baseball legacy, and if he can win Rookie of the Year in the big leagues like his dad and brother, maybe he can prove he’s worthy.

At 34, veteran catcher Jake just wants to finish out his contract and retire. He lost his passion for the game—and life—after driving away the man he loved. He swore he’ll never risk his heart again.

Then he’s traded to a team that wants a vet behind the plate to tame their new star pitcher.

Jake is shocked to find the gangly kid he once knew has grown into a gorgeous young man. Tightly wound Nico’s having trouble controlling his temper in his quest for perfection and needs a firm hand. Jake fights to teach him patience and restraint on the mound—but when the push and pull explodes off the field, can they control their hearts?

Reading the Signs by Keira Andrews is a gay sports romance featuring hurt/comfort, first times and exploration, an age gap, and of course a happy ending.

One I’ll read again and again…

One I’ll read again and again…
Reading the Signs has quickly become one of my cozy comfort reads. I’ve read it twice this month and I can’t wait to read it again. Keira Andrews has a way with her characters, creating depth and making you fall in love with their strengths and weaknesses. As per usual, I loved the side characters as much as the mcs. The issues within Nico’s family are examined with sensitivity (love his sister so much!) Nico and Jake are fire 🔥🔥🔥. There’s something so addictive about Nico’s secret crush that’s been smoldering for years, and Jake being jaded and determined to never fall in love (but we all know he doesn’t stand a chance). I was pleasantly surprised (and delighted) by the moment that brings their attraction to light, but what I especially loved was the tenderness and understanding between them. There’s a nice amount of on-the-page baseball (both practice and games) and although I went into this not knowing much about baseball, I learned so much. Overall Rating: 🥭🥭🥭🥭🥭 Spice Rating: 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️

    4.5-5 stars

This was a great story. I loved both Jake and Nico and really enjoyed their story.

Nico is a 22 year old baseball player that is pitching his rookie season on a major league team. Nico is playing for a Canadian team but his family lives in Chicago. His father used to play baseball and his brother currently does and Nico has always felt like he has to do just as well as they did in order to be considered half as good. Also, Nico is gay but has spent his life denying his sexuality because of his fear that his father and grandmother wouldn't accept it (even if his sister and srother probably would).

Jake is a 34 year old baseball player that plays catcher. Jake's father died but his mother is still around and is a strong supporter of his. Jake has been gay all his life and his parents accepted him but Jake has kept his sexuality a secret because he didn't want his sexuality to overshadow his skill as a pitcher. Jake is into dominance play in the bedroom...it's not full BDSM, more along the lines of dominance with some spanking and bondage.

Jake was a catcher for San Francisco for 8 years and when the story begins, he's being told that he's being traded to a Canadian team. This is a shock for Jake because he had no warning...he gets told after playing a game for San Fran and flies out the next morning, expected to play with his new team the very next day. Jake actually grew up in Canada so his mother is thrilled he's moving closer to home but Jake is understandably reeling from the sudden and unexpected change. When he gets there, Jake is informed that the team really needs him to work with their rookie pitcher, Nico. Jake used to be on the same team as Nico's brother so they knew each other and Jake was happy to see him again. When they actually lay eyes on each other, they're both strongly attracted to each other but, not realizing that they're both gay, they avoid acknowledging it.

Jake and Nico start working together and Jake is able to help Nico with some of his issues and they work well together. Before too long however, something happens between them and they realize that they're both gay and that the attraction is definitely mutual. After a bit of emotional fumbling, Jake and Nico figure out that they want to be together and start in that direction. The light BDSM play in the bedroom seems to help Nico (in addition to Jake's coaching in the games) and he does better than ever. Jake finds a new love for the game and things go pretty well. They decide to keep things quiet around the team and Nico's conservative family is still an issue to be dealt with. Surprisingly, while there were some rough parts, things turned out very well and end with Nico and Jake starting a HEA together.

I enjoyed this story greatly. I loved Nico and Jake. They both had their issues and insecurities but they were both good guys that made a wonderful couple. While I liked the baseball theme, there were some baseball terms in the story that I was unfamiliar with that had me wondering what they meant. I didn't stop to look them up and still thought the story was great so obviously it wasn't that big of a deal but hey, fair warning. Overall, I thought the story was great and would definitely recommend it. :D

This book reminded me a lot of Keira Andrews’ Flash Rip: a closeted athlete who is wound incredibly tight finds love and release through a more dominant partner. While I described Flash Rip as “light d/s dynamic” this one is more
explicitly BDSM- there’s some spanking, some tying up, etc. It’s still pretty light, and the dynamic is only in the bedroom, but I think it does need a BDSM tag. I am NOT into BDSM or D/s or really any kinks, and I found this book to be completely fine; so if BDSM is a dynamic you really enjoy, you’re likely to be disappointed here. If you, like me, don’t really enjoy that dynamic I think you’ll find this book ok.

With that out of the way, this is a sports romance between Nico, a 22 year old rookie pitcher on a newly formed MLB team in Ottawa and Jake, a 34 year old veteran catcher traded to the team to be a steadying mentor for the highly strung Nico. Adding to this is the fact that Jake used to play with Nico’s brother a decade ago and young teen Nico was hopelessly in love with Jake. Now an adult and deeply closeted, Nico finds himself playing on the same team as Jake and trying to control his feelings at the same time he places an insane amount of pressure on himself to win. Jake is close to retirement and has lost his love for the game, but working with Nico stirs up all kinds of feelings...
The characters were well drawn, the romance was more or less realistic, pacing was good, and it was a well-written and edited story. This was a solid 4.25 Stars- I’m unlikely to read it again (unlike Keira Andrews’ Honeymoon for One, which I loved), but I will recommend it.

This is my first book by this author and I enjoyed it immensely. I won’t be redundant and go into the blurb, you can read it above or on one of the many other reviews.

Reading the Signs was very well written and the main characters were beautifully developed. I loved that the angst level was minimal and that the angst that *did* exist was internal for Jake and Nico. Each of them had issues that held them back professionally as well as personally and it was beautiful watching them grow on their own and help each other through their issues.

There is the perfect amount of baseball in this book in my opinion, but I love baseball. If you don’t like it or don’t understand it, it may seem like their is too much for you. I felt the story in and off the field was perfectly balanced and the story on the field was necessary and vital in moving the story along.

I give the heat level in this book 3.75/5. The scenes were written well and had a level of spice that definitely got my attention. Overall, I felt the book was awesome and I am really looking forward to reading more from this author.

Overall, I give Reading the Signs 5/5 awesome stars

I really enjoyed this. Not a lot of angst, a lot of baseball, a cute ending and some hot sexy times, what more can a reader ask for?
I had a bit of a hard time getting into it at first, because the writing style is pretty detailed but once I read past the first two chapters, I was hooked and couldn't let go.

I wouldn't recommend it if you don't know anything / don't like baseball though because that's not a convenient background. It's heavily present in the book. My only complaint is that everything was a bit too easy. Makes for a sweet read though.
One thing I liked a lot too is how the age gap was handled because even if Nico has been in love with Jake since he was basically a kid, there was no doubt whatsoever Jake wasn't. No creepy "I was attracted to you from the start" from Jake's part. Jake's only starting to be attracted to Nico when Nico is an adult.

In this story, the play-by-play moments of baseball games are mixed with the still tricky moments of self-doubt, both about the game itself and about the possibility of coming out. Interesting interactions, low one page angst, steam at the right moments.

I didn't know a thing about baseball before I read this book, however, that didn't spoil my enjoyment at all. Kiera Andrews writes as beautifully as always. Jake is 34 and has been traded to another team. He's not happy, he's fallen out with baseball, just sees it as a job he has to do and just wants to see his time out. He's closeted and hopes to stay that way til he's finished playing. Nico is a rookie, he's gay, but due to his upbringing he tries to squash his sexuality. He's also totally stressed out trying to live up to his father's expectations. He's crushed on Jake since he was 13, but hasn't seen him for years.

When the two meet again everything changes. Their relationship builds slowly, but they discover that they are perfect for each other. There is some light BDSM, but it works well within the story. I enjoyed the baseball setting, the story was enjoyable and I didn't get bored as I was reading it. I liked the way the two handled their hangups, and reached their HEA. A good solid read.

    MUST. LOVE. BASEBALL.

Seriously. If you’re not already a baseball fan, you’ll spend large chunks of text skimming or lost. This is a baseball-heavy book.

Fortunately, I live for baseball season and like the author, I’m a huge Jays fan.

There were a few things about this book that made me chuckle. Knowing downtown Ottawa as I do, I wondered how many blocks of downtown buildings had to be demolished to build the Capitals’ stadium. 😉 But for the most part, I loved this book. The sex was pretty hot, although it could only be called B&D-lite. I would have loved to see some tease and denial in their scenes, I think it would have been a good lesson for Nico’s control.

Overall I give the book an unqualified 5 stars. I will read more by this author.
