Rebel: An Outlawed Story Kindle Edition
Samuel Hutchinson has lived his whole life in Rosemont, Rhode Island. And as far as he’s concerned, his future is fixed: complete his legal training, marry a respectable woman, and settle down to raise a family.
But Sam never counted on meeting Nathaniel Tanner.
Clever, urbane, and dazzling, Nate has been banished to Rosemont by a father determined to remove him from the rising political tension in Boston. The last thing Nate expects to find in the sleepy Rhode Island town is a man who’s not only interested in Nate’s radical ideas, but who interests Nate in return.
In every conceivable way.
Over books and conversation, their friendship deepens. But when Nate dares to confess his true feelings, Sam faces a stark choice—reject his friend and continue to live a lie, or rebel against everything he’s been taught and embrace his heart’s desire…

- Reviewed in the United States on March 11, 2021How many versions of "wow" did I leave in my kindle notes? There are so many unique and delicate and powerful turns of phrase that even with just a couple dozen pages this thing knocked me in the feelers. And then it's really rather steamy but also tender and now it sounds like I'm ordering Chinese takeout but it's about that satisfying. Can't wait to see the continuation of these characters in the upcoming novel.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 30, 2021You must read this before you read the sequel, "King's Man." Both are brilliant.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 10, 2021Nate Tanner walks into John Reed's law offices and Sam Hutchinson is taken aback. They meet, get to know one another, exchange ideas & meals & begin to fall for one another. It's love in the making.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 13, 2021There is something that always draws me to a Sally Malcom book. Probably her sprinkling of historical events. I found Nate and Sam charming and their chemistry a huge draw into this story. I cannot wait to see what happens next!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 15, 2021My only problem with Rebel is that it's over much too quickly.
This short story is just a very brief introduction to the couple at the heart of Malcolm's next novel, King’s Man. Readers get to meet Nate, the rebel of the title, who has been exiled from the radical ferment of 1774 Boston by his father. In Rhode Island, he meets Sam, and they fall for each other over discussions of books and political philosophy. Sam was taught that his desires for men are evil, though, so Nate must convince him that their love is not a sin.
Of course, given that it’s 1774, readers know that a radical and a more traditional thinker aren’t likely to have an easy time of it in the near future. But that’s a problem for the book to follow, and here we just get to enjoy the mostly sweet story of two men discovering love.
This review is based on a complimentary advanced reader copy; all opinions are my own.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 11, 2021I discovered Sally Malcolm's books over a year ago, when I read her Love Around the Corner and immediately fell in love with her writing.
After that, I read several of her books, including The Last Kiss, which was one of my favorite reads last year.
So, when I found out she was going to release a new romance, I was all excited!
And discovering it was another historical, well, that was like the icing on the cake, because I love the way she writes historical. You can tell she carefully and thoroughly researches the era and the historical facts, which make her stories very real and well written.
As is the fact with this short prequel to her upcoming release King's Man.
This one was just 34 pages, but boy, did it feel like a slow burn, which is due to the author's excellent writing.
And that poem, that was everything!!
I can't wait to see what will happen with Sam and Nate, knowing there will be separation and hurt and angst. I'm preparing myself for all those feelings, but as with all Sally Malcolm's books, I know it will be so worth it!
I couldn't give this less than 5 stars, it's excellent. One I'll re-read before reading King's man when that gets to be released, just to remember how Sam and Nate got together. (and to read that beautiful poem again)
- Reviewed in the United States on March 15, 2021This is the prequel to Sally’s upcoming novel King’s Man and, while it’s not necessary to the main story, it is an intriguing look into how Nathaniel and Sam meet and fall in love. Overcoming social mores and politics, Nate’s disappointment at having been banished by his father, and Sam’s loneliness, to find true love in Colonial Rhode Island is a story in itself, told with enough attention to historic detail to make it plausible. I actually read King’s Man first, so Rebel filled in some details, but as a stand-alone novella it’s also pretty satisfying. I love Sally’s writing, I can chew on her stories for days after I finish reading them, and Rebel is no exception. The characters, the sense of place and time are so vivid it’s almost impossible to put down. This is the start of a wonderful historical series that has as much to say about today’s world as it does that of the Revolutionary era. I received an advance copy in return for my honest review.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 14, 2021This is an interesting and entertaining story of forbidden love. Tanner is sent to Rosemont by his father because his father found out that Tanner liked men. He was sent to work for a man named Reed in his law office. When he walked into the office the first time, Tanner immediately noticed Sam, and Sam took notice of him. Tanner thought that Sam was like him, but didn't want to come right out and ask, so he befriended him. After a few weeks, Tanner invites Sam over to read some books, hoping that he could get Sam to show his interest. Unfortunately, when Sam realizes he was being offered more than friendship, he runs scared. It takes time for Tanner to make Sam realize that they could have something, but he does get Sam to try. It's a quick story, but it's sweet.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful reading!
I need to tell you that I have never been comfortable reading historical stories because all the suffering of the MCs due to the homophobia of the historical era is always a trigger for me. So when I read the blurb of this book I was afraid of the same but no, the author managed a sweet love story with some hints at the issue that helped with the plot and made everything more interesting but they weren't bad enough to cause me distress. On the contrary, I enjoyed a lot the romance, the steam between the characters and how the author closed the story at the end. Simply, a wonderful enjoyable reading!

5.0 out of 5 stars “A single soul inhabiting two bodies!”
“If it be sin to love a lovely lad, Oh then sin I…”
You feel you were there - with the characters, experiencing their emotional angst and finally love. A beautifully, well-written novel of early revolutionary America that ended too soon! A must-read!

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful
A beautiful short story. I love how Sally Malcom writes, and though this was such a short beginning to Sam and Nate’s story, it was so full of emotion and crafted so so well. Highly recommend!

The first time in a while I blushed again while reading a book. My god. So good. I am at a loss for words.
