★★★★★ - "I highly recommend Red Right Hand, it's fun, full of action and even some romance for those who are into that sort of thing." - Anna Szabó
★★★★★ - "Dead professors and schoolmates, crows, madness, and revenge-this is merely icing on the dangerous path that Damian has chosen to tread. This series will strike you as Harry Potter on steroids." - Vincent Dublado
From the Back Cover
Year two at the Academy of Heroes has arrived, and Damian is still trying to control the power fated to drive him insane. Worse, he now finds himself in the most uncomfortable of roles: on a team with other second-years.
Assassins. Black Hats. Lunatics.
The Free States has always been a nation surrounded by enemies: the Weaver to the north, Legion and Steel to the east, and Tezcatlipoca's fanatical legions to the south. Now, a new threat has emerged from within the country's own borders, and Damian finds himself an unwitting cog in that great conspiracy.
But the Academys most infamous student is nobody's puppet. Soon, the people pulling his strings will learn just what happens when you put a necromancer in the corner.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 15, 2020This book is a fantastic continuation of the trilogy. The first one hooked me and I eagerly awaited this one to be released, hoping that it'll give me a much needed hit. It did, and more. It's hard to write this review because I have to put THIS BOOK IS SO AWESOME I LOVE IT SEHFOSIDFHJKLJL:K into words explaining WHY I felt that way, without actually spoiling anything.
So here we go.
First, this book obviously takes place after the mind blowing finale of the first of the Trilogy. If you thought Damian was a messed up kid/young adult/whatever before, then the trauma of those events left it's mark. Reading about how Damian dealt with that and grew as a person was wonderful. That and the fact that whatever messed up rabbit hole See These Bones created continued deeper and deeper, but actual answers started to show up to questions I didn't even realized I had.
Then were the characters themselves. Red Right Hand brought back most of the cast, with an introduction to new ones, and each character felt like a real person, whether that person was one of the leads or supporting. I have to say this to those of you thinking of buying this book, do so. Words canNOT compare to the feeling this book can give you.
To the author, if you ever actually sit down and read ALL of the reviews, fantastic work. I read your blogs about how hard middle books are to write in trilogies and that you had a difficult time balancing everything, and I must say, you wrote a book that absolutely delivered. I had a harder time putting down this book that See These Bones, and I literally lost sleep on See These Bones because how much I enjoyed it. So thank you for the hard work, because you set a new bar with this Trilogy.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 17, 2022This second installment is not to be missed. Damian Banach is coming into his own but he still has a lot to learn. This 2nd book continues the story of a baby-crow / cape in training. This was a really good follow-up to the first book "See these Bones" and I was not disappointed. You got to see the main character grow and start to make friends. It's at this point you are really rooting for him and hoping he succeeds. I love the way the story is narrated as if you are sitting in front of someone reading you a book. Chris Tullbane paints an amazing picture in this book and I find myself forgetting I am not in the "Free States". Although this story is gritty, I love the occasional comedy regarding their lack of knowledge on history, although to us, I guess it would be present. This story is so amazing and it keeps me wanting more. I am both looking forward to the conclusion and also hoping it never ends. Because Damian is really trying to tell us something about this ending.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 20, 2021These books really remind me of a cross between the chronicles of Dr. Fid and the foul-mouthed books. They are better than the foul-mouthed books but a little short of the Dr. Fid books. I found these books to be more character driven rather than plot driven, which is great. The main protagonist is engaging as a character and his under dog personality grabs you and makes you root for him. The downside of it being so focused on the main character is that it does not really allow for much character development for the other characters in the story. Which might be a style choice that shows how almost "self-centered " the college age protagonist is, but it would be nice to have a little more well rounded supporting cast. The other issue is that it also doesn't have as much world building as I would have liked. My understanding is that the world is supposedly post-apocalyptic, because we have almost no cars and very bad roads, but we have marketing firms and PR firms. Transportation of goods and people is kind of one of the backbones of civilization, so why would there be almost none if that but also PR firms. One is almost conditionally dependent on the other, perhaps there is more to be revealed in the next book that opens the door to all this but that kind of thing should have been in the first book in my opinion, not the last. The last gripe I have is that the main character seems to be over promising on what is going to happen and under delivering. Say things like if only I knew how bad things would really be, or like but then something really crazy happens later but I won't tell you know. Effectively that has been going on for the last two books and no real pay off for any of the cryptic statements the mc makes. Now I'm hoping it pays off in the third book but, there may be too much hype for it too be fulfilling or it may not be enough to just cram it all in one final book. Overall, this series is very good. I found it reminiscent of Drew Hayes Super Powered series, or the Chronicles of Dr. Fid. I really am looking forward to the third book of the series.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 27, 2025Usually, I read several books at a time, switching as the mood dictates. Now and then, one will take up all my reading time. This one took up nearly all of it. This author definitely as my number with this MC, this plot and prose and pace and other good story stuff. I am really glad I already own book 3.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 11, 2022Wow! I enjoyed the first book and the unique world building but was curious to get to the crux of the story. I was pleasantly surprised to be surprised! This series is so fresh and side steps quite a few obvious tropes/pitfalls. The best is that the characters themselves feel real in all their shades of grey. Can't wait to read book 3.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 11, 2024So...
My review for See These Bones mentions 'the plot has bones' not as a pun but that the author was building the foundation for a monster of a story. Indeed. There be flesh on them bones now.
There is still some YA drama to wade through but (Yay!) we get a cheat sheet of the now second year students and their cape names. Hopefully they won't all be killed in #3.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome sequel
This is how you do a sequel and write a very fun book. Compared to previous book Walker was even more impressive

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Masterpiece!
I am a huge fan of Chris Tullbane’s and was super excited to read his newest book, Red Right Hand.
Being me, I had to go back and reread the first book (See These Bones) first. So I was frothing-at-the-mouth ready to dig into Red Right Hand. To say it lived up to my expectations is putting it mildly.
I’m pretty sure this author could write about anything and I would gobble it down happily. His writing style is so direct and relatable, and it carries through in all of his works that I’ve read.
But he doesn’t write about just anything. It is obvious that he writes what he wants to write and what he loves to write. There’s no mistaking that sense of dedication and enjoyment.
Back to Red Right Hand. Damian is still a clueless guy who finds himself in the middle of… everything. Some may call him an idiot (as they do in the book). But that’s the best part about this character. He just mows his way through every situation he finds himself in, whether he’s qualified or not. Which brings me to my absolute favorite trait of his. He will not go down without a fight. In fact as far as I can see, he refuses to say die at all. He is one crazy-determined dude and I can’t get enough of him. Grey sweats and all.
I also enjoyed how this book carried over some of my favorite characters and involved them more in the story. (Looking at you, Winter.) Additionally, a few of the characters I hadn’t paid much attention to at all in the first one became major players. That was a pleasant surprise.
I found that Red Right Hand digs deeper into a smaller group of characters than the first book and it’s a natural transition. It was very well done and appropriate for where the story takes us.
The story itself is another perfect mix of triumphant victories (both on and off the battlefield), as well as miserable failures. Every turn of the page keeps you on your toes wondering what in the world is going to happen next.
I absolutely recommend this book and cannot wait for the third installment.

4.0 out of 5 stars Foreshadowing
This book would be a million times better if almost every chapter didnt end with an unnecessary boute of foreshadowing.
- wrwReviewed in Canada on November 12, 2020
5.0 out of 5 stars Harsh and gritty
The tone of this second book in the series feels darker in some ways, but possibly more hopeful despite the foreshadowing of disaster to come. Gone is much of Damian's despair and powerlessness, replaced with an enemy to fight, the gradual acceptance of his peers, and the development of his powers into something more fearsome.
- Arundeepak JReviewed in India on March 16, 2021
5.0 out of 5 stars A neat sequel
Equally as good as See the Bones but half of the book felt like a repetitive of the first one but the last few chapters more than made up for it.
Definitely gonna read the conclusion once it's released...
