After an unspeakable crime, Hannah’s done being the quiet girl who never makes waves. But reinventing herself comes with a steep price…
Hannah tries to be the ultimate good girl, but it’s all a lie. Terrified of being bipolar like her mom, she makes sure to take all the hardest classes, become a community service leader, and most of all, never, ever stand up to anyone who doesn’t approve of her.
But that all changes with one decision, one broken rule, and one spiked drink that steals her memory and shatters her innocence.
Now her life’s splintered into before and after. And after the party, Hannah’s changed. She won’t stay away from Brad, the ex-stoner with a painful past of his own, no matter what her friends think. She won’t let them call her Mouse anymore. And she won’t stay silent about what happened, no matter who pressures her to keep her mouth shut.
Suddenly, her best friends become her worst enemies, forcing her to make a choice, and she must not only find a way to put the pieces of her life back together but figure out where she belongs now.

Review
The situation at the heart of Reinventing Hannah has been explored with some frequency in YA fiction and teen television, but rarely with this sharp a focus. Ori is sensitive to trauma, to survival, to the defensive cruelty of teenagers, to the power dynamics that inform the ritual of victim shaming, and to how tensions from a traumatic experience can fracture even the sturdiest relationships. He even freshens up the most age-old of scenes, the shopping makeover, paying clear-eyed attention to the ways that new clothes, for a teenager, is something like the audition of a new self.-Booklife Prize
From the Back Cover
Keeping quiet about the truth leaves Hannah stuck in depression, fear, and self-blame, creates an ever-widening rift between her and her best friend Molly, and reinforces the lies being told about her. And when she does summon up the courage to confide in Molly, Molly accidentally betrays her secret to the entire school, making the rumors and the bullying that much worse.
When Hannah decides to reinvent herself into someone unafraid to speak her truth -- or to date Brad no matter what anyone thinks -- friends and enemies alike pressure her to go back to being quiet, while her own fear and pain keep getting in the way of her new relationship. She must find the courage to stand up for herself and other survivors or lose the opportunity to reclaim her happiness.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 8, 2020Every now and then, a book comes along that really captivates ones interest. For me, that book was "Reinventing Hannah". The story of a young girl who goes through one of the most traumatic experiences a girl can, how it affected her, and how she went from quiet "Mouse" to a strong advocate.
The author has clearly done his research with this novel, as it is one of the most realistic portrayals of sexual assault and its aftermath that I have ever seen! It does not fall into the all too common trope of glorifying the assault, nor the also all too common trope of trying too hard not to talk about it. Rather, the author manages to find the perfect balance, and portrays it realistically, but with the amount of sensitivity that the situation deserves.
This novel covers a lot of heavy topics. Whilst sexual assault is the main one, it also covers drug and alcohol abuse, as well as mental health, among others. Because of this, it might not be for everybody, but the author seems to understand this. He has put content warnings, as well as websites and numbers to make use of if you or someone you know is dealing with the issues portrayed in this book, which I applaud him for.
The writing here is strong and real. I can picture vividly in my mind all of these characters. It is as if I know these people, and feel for them. That is where the book truly excels, in how realistic everything about it is. I feel that this book should be used in schools, as there are not enough books that deal with the issues presented in this book in this way as there should be., a fact which must be changed!
If you can't get enough of the "Hannah" universe, the author has written a short prequel, "Mama's Illness", which was released before this novel. I highly recommend reading that book, as well. While the books can both be enjoyed on their own merits, and it is not necessary to have read one or the other first, they do compliment each other nicely, and there are callbacks throughout this book to its predecessor.
In all, I enjoyed every moment of reading this book. Though there are some scenes which may be difficult to read, they are handled with sensitively, yet honestly. The characters are fleshed out and relatable, and the story is inspiring. I look forward to what comes next for Hannah, her friends, and indeed, the author himself. I am sure Mr. Ori has a bright future ahead of him, and he will be an author to watch!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 2, 2020While a rape is the catalyst for Jack Ori's Reinventing Hannah, the story of sixteen-year-old Hannah Kollman is much more than that. It is about a girl whose terrible and unexpected experience leads her on a journey to becoming her true self. Before she attends the Halloween party that changes her life in a terrible way, Hannah is a shy young woman who tries her best to avoid situations that could result in very bad decisions. However, after the disastrous consequences of that night, she decides that she no longer wants to be Mouse, the nickname her friends have given her because she's so quiet. Her decision to reinvent herself and stand up against challenges such as the loss of friends, merciless bullying, and police and medical professionals who seem to regard her situation with nonchalance makes for a compelling story that urges the reader to follow Hannah from the beginning of her journey up until the end. Even if the reader has never been a rape victim, Ori includes countless other situations that make Hannah a relatable character for anyone who has ever struggled with the high-school social scene. Due to his background in social work, he writes with a flawless realness that makes Hannah's story both believable and relevant for teens and adults alike in today's world. It is definitely worth a read!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 25, 2020Reinventing Hannah is not only an engaging story but also such an important one. The author is skillful in creating authentic characters, and his background as a social worker shines through in his ability to handle the delicate topic of sexual assault honestly, without glossing over facts or over-dramatizing them. This book will be a comfort to many who have suffered like Hannah as they witness her challenging journey, ultimately finding self-acceptance and love. But it's truly a book for everyone because it will spark the necessary conversations we need to have in order to understand and accept the realities of sexual assault and all those affected by it. Thank you, Jack, for this brave and important work.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 8, 2021So.
The main character's POV was not engaging. Like at all.
An occasional word would find it's way in to the story (like who in the hell wriggles?) that no one would ever use or use to describe anything in real life.
Plus there were lots of turning red and her face growing hot, but then saying on the next page that she blushed for once. Lots of whining about people not standing up for her, and then getting mad/angry when people do, because "she could stand/speak up for herself. The main character is annoying, her friends are awful, her mom is obnoxious and victim-blamey, and despite saying over and over again that "an angry friend is better than a dead one," she forgets this frequently and then regrets fiiiiiinally doing the right thing. I don't know. This was definitively an annoying read that I could barely finish- but I can see how it might be helpful for people that are...young, and massively immature?
Either way this book definitely isn't for anyone over the age of 18.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 28, 2020This is a well-written, multi-faceted novel describing the aftermath of Rape through the use of drugs. Hannah does not drink, but at a party is drugged and raped, while innocently having iced tea. The pain of Hannah is great, but the messages of vigilance, courage, and trust of self are powerful. This should be assigned reading to every teenager from 13 to 19, as it exposes the pressures, the family attitudes and the school atmosphere that every teenager will acknowledge and have experienced. Powerful lessons, well presented!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 4, 2023This book covers some difficult subjects, but does it in a way that is sympathetic to those who have been hurt in such situations. It gives an empowering message, and provides relatable characters. It isn’t an easy read, and it shouldn’t be, but it does show that it’s okay to speak up and okay to struggle with normal, everyday life after a sexual assault.

5.0 out of 5 stars Recommended read for all teenagers
This story explores the journey Hannah had through dealing with a sexual assault at a party and all the fall out with relationships in her life. Ultimately the experience is life changing and she learns who she really is and what matters to her. The author has put a lot of research and knowledge behind his story and has an easy to read style. I particularly liked that ultimately Hannah found her power for change from within.
