Jayla and Austin were best friends as teens when they were unexpectedly torn apart. The two lost touch because of a meddling adult. 13 years later, they are reunited when Jayla decides to seek him out.
Jayla is one tough chick. She has a strong, confident character, even after the trauma she received in her late teens. It's worth noting that she is an African-American ex-cop. I didn't realize this until over halfway through the book and had to reimagine her character mid-story.
A very good book showing Jayla's struggle to be a strong woman in a world that has already victimized her.
Austin grows up a lot during this story but is still a clueless pain in the butt sometimes.
Enjoyable read.
