– Unabridged
To save the only man she's ever loved, she must pay a price.
When Dr. Meghan Forester, a young researcher, helps create a vaccine for the deadly Makanza virus, her goal to annihilate the virus is coming true.
But the question remains - what becomes of the Kazzies? They'll always be infected carriers of the terrifying virus. Despite being newly vaccinated, the public still believes they'll die if exposed.
As government discussions about releasing the Kazzies meets public resistance, a frightening event plunges Meghan into the Kazzie world with Davin at her side. Unwittingly, she becomes the poster child for a political movement to free them. But when an old enemy resurfaces, Meghan learns that to save the only man she's ever loved, she must pay a steep price.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 13, 2024I am trying my best to finish this series. I don't like violence on innocent people and it truly infuriates me to the point of no sleep until I find out if they are ok. This book definitely keeps you guessing and is an emotional roller coaster. ....ugh...stay tuned....
- Reviewed in the United States on November 21, 2018This book was a good continuation of the series. It was intense and kept you wanting to turn the page. I’m not happy with the way some things were handled. The Mc didn’t always show her intelligence. I do have high hopes for the rest of the series though.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 4, 2018This is the second book in a four-book series. Meghan and Davin have worked together to find a cure for the Makanza virus, and now she wants to help set Davin and the other Kazzies free. However, the world isn't so sure they should be out amongst everyone else, so they put them all on a reservation, instead. Just when Meghan thinks she and Davin may have a semi-normal existance, someone from their past throws a giant wrench in her plan. Another excellent read that I couldn't put down!!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 20, 2019Well it was intense and kinda painful but I finished it. The only thing I feel is that I might have been let down. It was a 180 turn for me. Davin was selfish and Meg was a *****. So much was unsaid. I kept waiting and waiting then the book was over. Frustrated. That's how I feel. I dunno how many books in the series but if the next one won't be better then I am done with it. The characters dead end love story and the hopelessness I felt for humanity is just depressing. Are we really THAT bad? I know but I just don't want to accept it.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 6, 2019It’s a pretty good plot to continue the series. Meg and Davin got closer which I truly appreciate...but “it can never be” was way overuse phrase. I mean, I get it! They can’t be together, “forbidden love” and all. Furthermore, it took awhile to get to the point/step for the kazzies. It dragged a little. Yet, it doesn’t mean I wasn’t intrigued to read on. I didn’t lose interests for the kazzies and getting justice for them. So, in that sense, it’s a 5 stars for me! I think, however, if I read this on my own, I would struggle big time and so happy they decided to have the audio on book 2. I saw book 3 does have audio, too! Hoping book 4 will get the audio (crosses fingers)
- Reviewed in the United States on March 16, 2020I'm finding it ironic that in continuing to read this series I am not to my normal of escaping reality, however thoroughly enjoying staying where I am.
If any of that made sense.
In other words I can't stop reading. And normally read to escape reality, but seeing as the world is coming down with a virus right now. It's hard to escape that.
But I love the book
- Reviewed in the United States on March 4, 2018The battle for their freedom continues, despite a vaccine that can keep the public safe from another outbreak. Fear of the disease brings anger, protests, and uncertainty of what fate will come of those infected...
I enjoyed Meghan's growth in this book and I enjoyed getting to know the Kazzies more! It definitely leads into the next book in the series, leaving you with antici...pation

Who is going to get the better of that madman, Robers? I'm desperately hoping that davin doesn't get into more trouble and as time moves on they find as way to get a life together.

3.0 out of 5 stars I'm done with the series
I had problems with Compound 26, but since a lot of that was because of Ms. Street's poor biology and negative opinion of Canada, I decided to give this one a second chance. Nope, it has not redeemed itself. The poor biology is still there (produced a vaccine--effective against all 30 strains--*and* vaccinated the population in six months?!?), but so is the disjointed writing. Things are repeated as if the reader cannot remember from one page to the next how a room is laid out (for example) and personality traits flip and flop to suit the plot. Social anxiety is not something that switches on and off. Meghan's a brilliant scientist but she makes some dumb decisions.
So I cannot recommend this book, and I'm done with the series. I don't care enough about the characters to even speed read the rest to discover if there is an HEA.

4.0 out of 5 stars Still a good series but...
This book seems to start in the middle, as the whole story of finding the actual vaccine & implementing it gets skipped over, and then it takes a long time to get far so the book seems to move very slowly, but it still has integral moments that fit well into this really good series. And it definitely makes you think about what would happen to survivors of a deadly disease who remain infected, even if everyone else is vaccinated. Human fear along with ignorance & hate lead to some of the worst traits of humanity being displayed.
