Resilient: Survival is everything Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 346 ratings

My name is Erika and I am the last human on Earth.

The Simian S1 Virus wiped out everyone, leaving me alone in an Africa that is suddenly not as friendly as I remember it.

Amid trying to deal with the death of my parents, finding shelter, and looking for food, I discover horrors I wish I had never seen.

Haunted, hunted, and scared, I only have one thing going for me – I am resilient.

“Resilient is awesome, disturbing, clever, and character driven. There were scenes that made my hair stand on end.” – Reviewer

Toni Cox has created a dystopian novel in Resilient that works and does so extremely well. As far as I know, this is Cox’s first published novel that features an end of the world scenario. It is set in South Africa, Cox’s home country, and her descriptions of the countryside and wildlife, especially in the latter part of the book are stunning.

The entire novel follows her main character, Erika, from a pampered city woman to a self-sufficient heroine of the entire planet Earth. The reader follows Erika’s growth and should be impressed with her thought process to survive and somewhat comfortably at that. Using her training and her OCD, she builds an environment where she could survive in a hostile environment initially for herself and then for several other survivors. Curiously, Cox uses a dog, who Erika found extremely annoying at the beginning of the book, to ignite her self-determination and self-preservation. They became the best of friends and the dog figures integrally throughout almost the entire book.

As is typical of Cox’s work, her characters are incredibly believable. Their dialogue is appropriate and works well to advance the storyline. The settings, as mentioned above, are incredible and extremely realistic. Indeed, many are lifted directly from Cox’s real life world.

The story itself is gritty and, for me, riveting. There is a fair amount of graphic violence but Cox doesn’t take that “over the top” and includes only what is necessary to advance the story. Her characters’ mood shifts reflect the truth of what they are facing. The entire book leads well to an intense climax that is as breathtaking as it is melancholy.

Novels of this sort aren't normally my first choice. I like Urban Fantasy but usually "end of the world" tales don't figure highly on my list of "likes". I found Resilient to be readable, a little bit terrorizing, and entertaining as well.

This is a book I would recommend to any age group from young adult to advanced aged readers. In a way it is a “coming of age” novel but not a typical one at all.

Resilient -- Survival is Everything by Toni Cox (Kindle Edition)
This is a dystopian, end-of-the-world-as-we-know-it novel about yet another pandemic. This one, the Simian Flu, wipes out nearly every human being on the planet. In fact, the heroine, Erika, believes for some weeks that she might be the only living soul to survive. She goes to sleep one night feeling that she has the flu or something and awakens find that the area around Johannesburg, South Africa, is a dead zone filled with corpses.
    What I Liked:
This novel's main strength is the character of Erika, a determined young women who is smart, resourceful, and with a huge sense of self-preservation. She also seems to have a touch of OCD, which proves to be a good thing.
She likes to dose herself with olive leaf tablets and elderberry juice, which seem to account in part for her miraculous survival, together with a strong natural immunity.
There are not actually many other characters, but Bronwyn and Hunter, two other survivors, seemed like real people. Another guy, Andrew, was less strongly realized. Character development was a strong point for these few..
This is a page-turner. Threats and dangers seem to come from all sides, and Erica's problems seem to get worse as the novel progresses, even though she is living in a city of the dead and mostly-dead. There is a minimum of four-letter words and only a few typos. This is a relatively clean read.
    What I Did Not Like:
The book is written in first-person, present tense. I dislike this format. It seems to be often attempted and rarely done well. Mrs. Cox pulls it off pretty well, but I still consider the format a burden rather than a benefit. It weakens the novel.
Another problem that I had is the depiction of the virus killing everyone all at once, in literally one night. That seems to be wildly improbable. Utterly impossible, more like it. Any virus that kills that fast would burn itself out before it spread very far. If it had a long incubation period, people could not possibly all die simultaneously. Think about it!! Not Possible.
    Conclusion:
But, OK, accepting that incredible plot element, the rest of the book works well for me. I found it a fast-paced, smart, interesting read. Erika is a remarkable character, and I liked her and wanted her to succeed. I also liked Morgan, the dog. I see some problems, but I think the book is at least worthy of four stars.

This was one heck of a book to be reading in the midst of a pandemic. Just wow!
Erika was a force to be reckoned with and she didn't let a little thing like seemingly being the only person left alive stop her from trying her best to survive and thrive. Many scenes in this book were eerie and chilling as I read and observed her doing her best to stay prepared. Her strength was definitely admirable. I was so anxious with every chapter and new situation she would find herself in.
This was an incredible story from start to finish that had my anxiety peaked the whole way through.

This book sounded so interesting that I had to pick it up. It’s always wonderful to read novels set in less used counties, so South Africa was a first for me.

So if you’re wondering why I almost didn’t finish...well, some irritating (to me) tropes, not-user-friendly slang, and untranslated non-English conversation. The latter throws a reader out of the story with crazy confusion. I can’t stop and Google every ten seconds and still keep in the zone. There are many foreign authors who stick to a universal slang OR put asterisk footnotes. So. Very. Helpful.
That’s my con list, as it were.

The rest of the book shines. The main protagonist is a woman alone, surround by corpses, scared, and traumatized. So believable and on point. Erika grows, adapts, learns, and...enter stage right The Primals #ZombieThings. Time to WOman up and she does. The protagonist is smart and ready to do what needs to be done, yet she has FEELINGS. Guilt, fear, depression - look Mum, a “real” girl! I won’t give out spoilers, it’s not my style, but keep reading. The plot thickens. The pace quickens.
Then suddenly the last page turns and you’ve gobbled this book down. Yummy :-)

Erika is the heroine of the story. In a rapidly dying world she survives
Erika finds herself alone in a world full of the dead and dying. Survival is paramount. Moving back to her parents house seems to be the best idea, there is security there and she needs it to survive. Finding others alive is her priorty now.
Erika finds friends and enemies along the way, including those who perpetrated the whole virus. Canshe learn anything from their work? Can she even trust herself around others?
Along with her new friends and Morgan, the dog, Erika begins to build her new life.
