When Mary Anne Wilson, one of her best friends from Lowood Institution for Orphans, appears unexpectedly at Eyre Hall with distressing news about their deceased friend, Helen Burns, Jane realises she must return to the orphanage where she has crucial unfinished matters to attend.
Will Jane find a way to keep the promise she made to Helen over fifteen years ago when she was a penniless orphan?

- Reviewed in the United States on October 12, 2021Format: KindleVerified PurchaseWhat a gem! As a huge fan of Jane Eyre, I wasn’t really sure how I would feel about this book but I loved every word of it. Set post-Jane Eyre, Jane is now Mrs. Rochester and living the life she dreamed of but finds herself unhappy after several miscarriages. Jane is also struggling with the loss of her friend Helen. Jane agrees to help Mary Anne from the orphanage when plans are made to destroy the church and dig up the cemetery where Helen and the other children from the orphanage are buried. Desperate to make Jane happy, Edward vows to help her with whatever she needs even if he has his own plans.
Luccia Gray does such an amazing job with this follow up to Jane Eyre. She is true to the original characters while still producing a well written story that is a joy to read. Her writing is impeccable making reading her books even more enjoyable and entertaining. Gray is a master at descriptions, imagery, and character development. This is the first piece of Gray’s work I have read and I was so impressed. I can’t wait to read more!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 8, 2021Format: KindleI am telling you I just can not get enough of Luccia Gray's Eyre Hall series!! I love them. So far I have read "Blood Moon at Eyre Hall" and "All Hallows at Eyre Hall" plus this one and have absolutely adored all three.
Luccia Gray takes on an extraordinary task, attempting a sequel to such a classic as Jane Eyre, but she hits it right on the nail for sure. She does such a wonderful job with her writing style, her descriptions of time and place, the adding of new characters that fit right in with the originals, just every aspect of these books are spot on. If I didn't know better I would swear Bronte' herself was writing these from beyond the grave.
In Resurgam Jane is married to Rochester and living a life of luxury, but is not completely happy having suffered several miscarriages when she wanted to fill the house with children. Of course Edward doesn't want this, he doesn't want to share Jane with anyone else, they have one son and to him that is plenty.
Jane's friend, Mary Anne from the orphanage arrives unexpectedly seeking Janes help. They are trying to dig up the cemetery where their friend Helen is buried and tear the church down where the children from the orphanage went.
Mary Anne asks Jane for help to save Helen's soul. Jane agrees, realising that this is the meaning of the dreams she has been having about Helen, and remembers a broken promise she made to Helen years ago. Edward agrees to help, anything to get Jane's spirits up and her attention back on him.
As always Edward has his own agenda for doing things and secrets kept from Jane. What will happen next?
These books are so good, I read this novella in a half a day at work and of course I want more! I recommend these to all Jane Eyre fans, and fans of Victorian gothic novels in general. They are perfect. Looking forward to reading the next in the series.
Thank you to Luccia Gray and Booksirens for the free ARC of this book, I am leaving my honest review in return.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great place to start with this series
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis was a pleasant afternoon read while on my sunbed recently. Having read the original trilogy I was intrigued to read that Gray had expanded the series to six books and this novella can be read as a standalone or as a prequel to The Eyre Hall series.
Jane is married to Mr Rochester, and they have a son, John. Sadly, Jane has suffered miscarriages since and is struggling with her health because of this. She is also having nightmares where Helen Burns, her best friend from the Lowood Institution for Orphans who died in her arms, comes to her asking her to save them all. Jane doesn’t understand the message until one night when another friend from Lowood, Mary Anne Wilson, arrives with bad news.
As always with Gray’s books the writing is strong as are the characters with Mr Rochester being a particularly complex one. He seems to care so deeply for Jane yet also manages to be manipulative and selfish, unable to bear her having any interest, including children, that might take her away from him and her duty to him.
Anyway, suffice to say this is an enjoyable and intriguing read which introduces a character who factors heavily in the following series. You don’t have to love or hate the original Jane Eyre to enjoy this series, just give it a go. This is a fine place to start.

4.0 out of 5 stars Resurgam review
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseA welcome strong entry, and re-entry point, for any readers who are interested in this series.
Mary Anne Wilson, an old school mate and colleague, has turned to Jane for help regarding the graveyard where Helen Burns is buried. The meeting is a wake up call to action for Jane who realizes how far she has changed since those days at Lowood school and holds her own disappointments about married life.
Gray utilises her strengths in conveying individual voices and thoughts of the characters. Most welcome was the heavy inclusion of Edward Rochester's perspectives and who is shown as a deeply controlling individual. If you go onto read the main series, his parts are important in terms of his later motives. For Jane, it is interesting to read how integral purpose and love remain to her even as she grows older. Gray does also include the perspectives of some other characters here, one who will go on to become significant in the main series, but as a whole this novella slots nicely into her main series.
While this is a short novella, it is nevertheless an incident filled one where Jane tries to return to her core identities and values.
