Rewritten (Unscripted Book 2) Kindle Edition
Quellcrist wasn’t new to fame or the effect it had on a relationship. He’d been married in the spotlight for as long as he’d been famous. But that was before Hale. He knew it was going to test him but even he hadn’t known the toll that months apart would take on his fledgling relationship.
Long days of shooting, different time zones, calls every day dwindled to days without calls, and rumors were all over the rags. Through it all Quell had to battle his own worst enemy but he didn’t know how to win against something inside him. Depression ate him whole and pain took over.
There was so much more at stake than losing his boyfriend, he was losing his best friend. His lifeline, the love of his life. Was there any way to come back from the damage done?
Can they rewrite their ending?

About the author

Gray is a cynical Chicago native, who drinks coffee all day, barely sleeps, and is a little too fashion obsessed. He writes romance sprinkled with kink, and hot as hell, dark and angsty characters because everyone deserves a happily ever after.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 13, 2020I absolutely loved UNSCRIPTED where I first met famous actor Quellcrist King and his costar, Hale, and I am so glad that I finished that first book just a few days before REWRITTEN released, because I wasn’t ready to turn these two wonderful characters loose. Where the first book dealt mostly with Quell discovering he’s not nearly as straight as he thought he was—filming intimate scenes where this straight actor is playing a gay character should have hinted at what he’d be called on to do—but the budding romance between the openly gay Hale and the “not so sure what he is” Quell was hot and bittersweet at the same time. Clinical depression is never a welcome condition, but Hale’s tender understanding of Quell’s mental illness worked beautifully.
However, in REWRITTEN, the two men are facing a long separation as they each have contracted jobs in major films that will keep them on opposite sides of the world for many months. Separation from Hale is Quell’s enemy, and as their schedules keep them apart even longer than they originally planned, Quell sinks deeper into depression, and Hale begins to wonder if Quell no longer loves him. The issues between the two are realistic and powerful, and I felt personally involved as work drove them farther apart even as both of them recognized the love they felt for each other was too important to lose.
JR Gray is one hell of a storyteller—I got just as caught up in this second book in the series as I did with the first, and I definitely recommend REWRITTEN. Two really good men struggling to make love work when so much is against them is a story that has really stayed with me. The writing is emotional and the characters fresh and powerful. Definitely a story that stays with the reader.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 14, 2020I remember how much I loved Quell and Hale in the first book, so when I saw there was a sequel I had to go and buy it. I adore these two so much. Sometimes I want to bang their heads together or lock them in a room to make them talk. They are both still as real and flawed as in the first book and it makes for an amazing read.
My only thing is that the dialogue gets very confusing sometimes and I've no idea who is talking or what they are talking about. It's still a more than worthwhile read though.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 11, 2020...just like crippling depression is. This is an accurate portrayal of the not so happily ever after that follows the first book's budding new euphoric relationship.
Real life isn't for wimps. Sometimes it takes self-isolation, and alcohol, and weed, and not eating, and suicidal ideation. None of which are appropriate coping skills for depression, but all of which commonly happen alongside that dark demon. If you're lucky - and Quell is - your friends hang in there and try to help, where they're allowed to.
This is not necessarily a great example of the plot, but I feel it in my soul. So, writing example:
"I’d actually slept the last two nights and of course, because my body was always in such a sleep debt, a good night's sleep made me feel like I’d been hit by a train and then set on fire and ran over a few times before someone wrote tired in the ashes."
Real life isn't always pretty; the portrayal of it feels accurate here. A solid read, I'd like to read more from this author.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 14, 2020There are no words to explain the true depth and beauty of the love and struggle Gray creates in this series. So perhaps the closest are those he gave to his characters...Quellcrist and Hale show readers how very necessary it is to chase happiness. Their journey as a couple and individuals, in the end, is about more than finding love, it is about chasing that elusive thing a great love gifts us with, happiness.
Thank you, J.R. for creating Quell, who is as beautifully damaged as those of us struggling with depression need to see we are. And for Hale, someone brave enough, and yes, lucky enough to love us. The greatest gift one can give is acceptance and love; your writing pairs them with understanding and hope. Thank you. ❤
- Reviewed in the United States on February 26, 2025I didn’t see the point of the 2nd book! They could have been set as one book rather than this long boring sequel
- Reviewed in the United States on March 5, 2022The second part of Quell and Hale’s love story is filled with angst and longing. A terrific read from J.R. Gray that will have you rooting for these two to find their way back to each other.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 4, 2020This book touched on the reality of depression and the impact that it has on more than just the individual suffering from it. Quell knows that Hale loves him, but the demons he is fighting in his mind make him doubt it. Hale doesn't understand why Quell is ghosting him.... does he want the relationship to be over? Was their whole relationship just a rebound from Quell's marriage? So many questions and doubts begin to destroy what seemed so promising. Is their love strong enough to overcome everything tearing them apart? This read was emotional and sometimes painful but it was very real and exceptionally written. Another great book by J R Gray.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 25, 2020But I could not live without his Quell and Hale if I tired now. This couple is amazing to read! JR is such an amazing writer. I can feel the characters emotions coming off the pages. I had to read a chapter and stop for like 10 minutes and then go back for more. When I finally got to the epilogue I paused for like 4 hours cause I wasn’t ready for this amazing story to end just yet. Rewritten is such an amazing and believable story I can’t help but catch all these feels for these men. Can’t wait to see what the future holds for them. Amazing 5 star read JR!

5.0 out of 5 stars Sadly joyful.
The despair so eloquently written is a large part of depression. Depression makes people selfish as they draw away from loved ones. Depression is isolating and sadly it can be so overwhelming that permanent quiet is sought. A well written book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Must read first Unscripted !! ♥
Hale & Quell both smashed my heart ♥ Beautiful touching love story with mental health shadowing them. Beautiful ending where they came to the realization they needed, putting themselves first.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent follow up to Unscripted.
I fell in love with Quell and Hale as I was reading Unscripted, the first book of this series. At the end of the book, I convinced myself that, despite everything that had happened, that these two would make it work.
Then, as I was reading Rewritten, I decided that I was gonna shake the author if I got my hands on him! Let's just say that 'stuff' happens, and suddenly Quell's depression kicks in big time! I was like, nooooo...please...
As Quell begins to decline, he follows the hidden traits of his mental illness. He feels sadness, hopeless and helpless. His self-esteem takes a beating and he constantly blames himself for what is happening. Not being a stranger to the symptoms of depression, I could've cried for him. I really, at one point, was unsure that I wanted to finish the book. It was so sad.
Then I actually considered skipping to the end to see what would happen! They'd appeared such a strong and devoted couple, I couldn't believe that it was going to go wrong! However, I took a deep breath, and carried on.
It's such an emotional story, I just wanted to reach into the book and hug both MCs, especially Quell. It was so hard to witness the personal and difficult journey that these two had to make to resolve their issues. It also made me realise and accept that no matter what you do, no matter how much love you give or receive, anxiety and depression can just bombard its way past all of that.
Excellent follow up by the author, as usual I was struck by his sincere and honest writing style. I wouldn't recommend it as a standalone. Unscripted really does need to be read first.

4.0 out of 5 stars I have an issue with this
And it’s the cover. Really false advertising. Carefree and happy are not things found in this book. But it’s brilliant nonetheless. Give this series a go. But brace yourself.

4.0 out of 5 stars What a wonderful story..
I whinged a little after book one- that I lost track of who’s POV at times, and the Hale’s brother seemed more like a prop than a person.. I still have those same couple of qualms, however…
I BLOODY LOVED THIS STORY!!!
Here’s my breakdown of book 2:
At 10% I was like: Arghhhhh!!!!! Try some communication guys, c’mon just talk to each other… 🗣
At 26% I was learning interesting relationship truths right there alongside Quell from his therapist… 👨⚕️
39% and Quell was worrying me.. and I felt like begging them to communicate with each other again.. and what a sweetheart Hale was for sending chicken soup 🥣.. and then I just wanted to yell at Quell for getting sucked into the TMZ vortex..
41% and I hope, I reallllly, really hope, that Tobias doesn’t turn out to be a douchebag 🤞
45% and I feel like Quell is being a bit childish… then I feel guilty for feeling that way because it’s blatantly obvious he isn’t doing well mentally and I should be more considerate..
58%… these men… they’re breaking my heart 💔
64%… pucker up boys… is there some strategy at play Mel? 🎬
76% and I admit it, I was kinda praying for an accidental ‘in the moment’ s$x while filming situation.. 🙏🤭
87% and I have hope again, maybe, just maybe these men will get to the other side of all of this.. 💗
90%: “he said”, “I said”, “he laughed”, “I asked”.. Huh?? Who said what now? 🤔
100%… of wonderful!!!
