Rich and Dead (A Murder on Maui Mystery Book 12) Kindle Edition

4.7 out of 5 stars 160 ratings

Texas Hold ’em in paradise. A table full of suspects. The minimum bet could cost him his life.

PI Edgar Allan “Poe” Rutherford is tired of taking down murderers. So when a detective comes to him with a suspicious case of a millionaire who drove off a Maui cliff, he declines her request for help. But when the victim’s scorned lover demands money in exchange for information, Poe is pulled back into the game.

Demanding answers from the selfish vulture, the relentless private eye uncovers a connection to a high-seas, high-stakes illicit poker ring. And after he discovers the vicious men involved, he’s convinced the death was no accident. But to find the murderer, the charming PI needs to get on the yacht and take a seat at the table…

Can the sharp-witted investigator flush out a sinister cabal before he’s dealt a dead man’s hand?

Rich and Dead is the twelfth standalone novel in the tropically intriguing Murder on Maui mystery series. If you like charismatic characters, hang-loose humor, and dicey island scheming, then you’ll love Robert W. Stephens’ seaside chiller.

I've read the first 12 books in this series and have just started on the 13th, "Poe's First Law". I have really enjoyed these books and highly recommend them. It's a bit sad that there are only two more of these stories for me to read.

Edgar Allen (Poe) Rutherford is the main character and we get to watch while he accidentally evolves into a private investigator. The author, Robert W. Stephens, has a super way to relate these stories and his style brings Poe alive. It often seems that I am sitting in the same room with Poe and he is telling these stories to me as a friend... one on one.

Poe investigates murder cases on Maui... sometimes on his own and sometimes with his best friend or his wife, a Maui police detective. And there seems to be a lot of murders to investigate... making the island the Cabot Cove (or Midsomer UK) of the Pacific. The cases are complex and Poe tackles them differently than the normal police approach.

I have visited Maui several times and am familiar with most of the locations described in the books (even when they are fictional!). Poe loves his life on Maui and often describes the island during his investigations. I think most readers will enjoy Poe's illustrations of Maui weather, food, locations, culture and lifestyle.

Mr. Stephens always has a great story to tell but it becomes very convoluted with too many characters. It’s hard to keep all of the characters straight.

Another great story in the Poe series. I enjoyed this story from the very beginning with an eye opening scene. It grabbed your attention and the story evolved from there. Poe, Foxx, Alana and of course Maui the dog were at it again. And as Foxx stated "I've never had so much fun". That goes for me too!

Robert Stephens continues to evolve his characters in a way that makes us want to know more about them. He has come up with another great plot that takes the reader to beautiful Maui with a series of twists that keeps you turning pages to find out what happens. I love the style in which the protagonist talks to the reader. You will love this book and the entire series!

I love these books. They conjure up the magic of the Hawaiian islands, they have humour and best of all, they are fast paced thrillers set on the beautiful island of Maui. Poe is an accidental investigator who can't help but solve cases that the police are stuck on. Independently wealthy, he doesn't need to work for a living and mostly gives his fees to the local dog charity. He also has a small canine companion by the name of Maui and a beautiful police detective wife. Oh, and a business partner who almost loses his life in this story. I guarantee that if you start reading these stories, you will want to read them all. I have. The downside is that I now have to wait impatiently for the next one!
