Right Trusty and Well Beloved... (Short fiction inspired by King Richard III) Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 61 ratings

"I want you to tell my real story… Use any talent you have to show me in my true light, not painted black with Tudor propaganda. My new army must be wordsmiths, not soldiers; artists, not knights; musicians, not warriors. We will lay siege to the towers of Tudor lies and bring them crashing down…" Who, for you, is the real Richard III? Is it the boy, exiled in fear to the Continent aged seven? The loyal warrior, brother to Edward IV? The young man struck by tragedy? The just and rightful king? Or Thomas More’s and Shakespeare’s infamous villain? You can meet them all within these pages … or can you? This follow-up to the 2018 anthology "Grant Me the Carving of My Name" showcases short stories and poems by international authors inspired by all aspects of King Richard III. Sold in support of Scoliosis Association UK (SAUK) with a Foreword by Philippa Langley MBE and edited by Alex Marchant. With contributions from Rebecca Batley, Terri Beckett, Sue Grant-Mackie, Kim Harding, Wendy Johnson, Joanne R. Larner, Kit Mareska, Máire Martello, Liz Orwin, Elizabeth Ottosson, Nicola Slade, Richard Tearle, Brian Wainwright, Kathryn Wharton and Jennifer C. Wilson.

This is an excellent and entertaining series of short stories and poems by a variety of authors giving a variety of opinions and a swathe of emotions about Richard III, hero to these writers, but perhaps seen as villain to some readers - it depends on how you feel about him, but maybe this little anthology will help to change your mind about history's (unfortunate) blackening of his name. One story is only a few pages long, another is an exploration of alternative history. Some stories are exciting, some amusing, some tragic and will make you cry. All were well written, but as with any anthology some, inevitably, had an edge over others. Some authors I am familiar with (a few we have reviewed here on Discovering Diamonds), some authors were interesting enough to warrant looking for what else they have written. It is a short book, 160 pages, ideal for a journey or to while away a few, otherwise tedious, moments. I read much of my copy while waiting at our local hospital for an appointment. I was so absorbed I almost missed my name being called. Reviewed for Discovering Diamonds #DDRevs

This was really fun to read if you approached it with an open mind. As a Tudor affficiando, this was my first exposure to Richard. I thoroughly enjoyed it. My favorite story was Richard and Shakespeare as ghosts by Kit Mareska. It was very emotional and occasioned much sympathy. The Wife Beside Doncaster was an emotional story with a very happy ending. I love happy endings. Let Him Fly That Will was my other favorite. Richard as a young boy is charming and easy to feel for. Do yourself a favor and read this book. Mary Beattie

Liked the potential for R III’s thoughts and words and those of his ‘contemporaries’ to be written as they may have been said, and that this little book did not follow along the likes of the Tudor propaganda machine.

Really enjoyed this collection of short stories and poems, exploring different scenarios around the War of the Roses and Richard III. Made me think of turmoil of the time, the impact on normal people and a ‘what if’ of the Battle of Bosworth.

I liked especially the poem 'Grief' and the stories 'The wife of Doncastre' and 'Richard Redux' - the last is an alternative history. Nice selection. Immediately interested by atmospheric cover.

Superb collection of short stories about Richard III. Hard to choose my favourites; they were all very good but for me Richard Redux, The Men and the Monument, and The Wife Beside Doncaster. The latter was interesting because it was based on a real, little-known event
