About the authors
Brian Wainwright was born in 1953, in Manchester, England, and apart from a very short time in his twenties has always lived there or thereabouts. He is fascinated (if not quite obsessed) by the Middle Ages, and all his books, so far, have had medieval settings. He writes both humorous fiction (for example The Adventures of Alianore Audley) and serious historical fiction (for example Within the Fetterlock).
Brian's main interest is in the House of York, particularly its earlier years. He is currently writing a prequel to Within the Fetterlock, provisionally titled This New Spring of Time. This will deal with Constance of York's early life and the dramatic politics which surrounded it.
There are several other projects on the stocks including a second "Alianore" book and a serious novel about the later Yorkist era, which will feature, but not be centred on, Richard III.
Jennifer has been stalking dead monarchs since she was a child. It started with Mary, Queen of Scots, then moved onto Richard III. At least now it results in a story!
She won North Tyneside Libraries' Story Tyne short story competition in 2014 (no dead monarchs, but still not a cheerful read), and has been filling notebooks and hard-drives ever since. Her Kindred Spirits series, following the 'lives' of some very interesting ghostly communities, is published by Darkstroke, and her historical romances by Ocelot Press.
Jennifer is currently exploring some new ideas for historical romance, and hoping to visit Kindred Spirit friends old and new, north of the border...

Joanne Larner was born in London and moved to Rayleigh in Essex (UK) in 2001. She has wanted to write a novel since the age of thirteen and finally managed it in 2015. She was helped by two things: National Novel Writing Month and Richard III. Richard was her inspiration and she became fascinated by him when she saw the Channel 4 documentary 'The King in the Car Park' in February 2013. She researched his life and times and read countless novels, but became fed up because they all ended the same way - with his death at the Battle of Bosworth.
So she decided to write a different type of Richard story and added a time travel element. The rest is (literally) history. She found his character seemed to write itself and with NaNoWriMo giving her the impetus to actually DO it, she succeeded.
Then came two sequels, making 'Richard Liveth Yet' a trilogy - a kind of 'Back to the Future' with Richard III!
She was asked by Susan Lamb, another Ricardian author, to collaborate on a humorous book about Richard, 'Dickon's Diaries', where Richard (aka Dickon) narrates in Olde Englishe the escapades of his household at his castle of 'Muddleham'. You can see the type of humour used on our Facebook page, Dickon for his Dames: https://www.facebook.com/Dickiethird/
In 2017 one of her Ricardian short stories was accepted for inclusion in an anthology of scary stories edited by Dan Alatorre: The Box Under the Bed
Born and raised in the rolling Surrey downs, and following stints as in archaeology and publishing in London, Stirling and Gloucester, I now live and write surrounded by moors in King Richard III’s northern heartland.
My first novel, 'Time out of Time' (published June 2021), won the 2012 Chapter One Children’s Book Award and my second was put to one side in 2013 when the rediscovery of King Richard’s grave in a car park in Leicester was announced. A Ricardian since my teens, it prompted me at last to write a novel about the real Richard III for older children. So 'The Order of the White Boar' and its sequel 'The King’s Man' were born.
A third novel in the sequence, 'King in Waiting', was published in 2021, with 'Sons of York; to follow in June 2022. Together the four books explore the life and legacy of the real King Richard III, not the fictionalized villain of Shakespeare's play and 'traditional' history. They have been called 'A wonderful work of historical fiction for both children and adults' by the Bulletin of the Richard III Society.
I've also edited two anthologies of short fiction by authors inspired by King Richard: 'Grant Me the Carving of My Name' and 'Right Trusty and Well Beloved...' Both are sold in support of Scoliosis Association UK (SAUK), helping people today who have the same spinal condition as King Richard.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 7, 2019Format: KindleThis was really fun to read if you approached it with an open mind. As a Tudor affficiando, this was my first exposure to Richard. I thoroughly enjoyed it. My favorite story was Richard and Shakespeare as ghosts by Kit Mareska. It was very emotional and occasioned much sympathy. The Wife Beside Doncaster was an emotional story with a very happy ending. I love happy endings. Let Him Fly That Will was my other favorite. Richard as a young boy is charming and easy to feel for. Do yourself a favor and read this book. Mary Beattie
- Reviewed in the United States on January 28, 2020Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseLiked the potential for R III’s thoughts and words and those of his ‘contemporaries’ to be written as they may have been said, and that this little book did not follow along the likes of the Tudor propaganda machine.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 25, 2020Format: KindleThis is an excellent and entertaining series of short stories and poems by a variety of authors giving a variety of opinions and a swathe of emotions about Richard III, hero to these writers, but perhaps seen as villain to some readers - it depends on how you feel about him, but maybe this little anthology will help to change your mind about history's (unfortunate) blackening of his name.
One story is only a few pages long, another is an exploration of alternative history. Some stories are exciting, some amusing, some tragic and will make you cry. All were well written, but as with any anthology some, inevitably, had an edge over others. Some authors I am familiar with (a few we have reviewed here on Discovering Diamonds), some authors were interesting enough to warrant looking for what else they have written. It is a short book, 160 pages, ideal for a journey or to while away a few, otherwise tedious, moments. I read much of my copy while waiting at our local hospital for an appointment. I was so absorbed I almost missed my name being called.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommend
Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseReally enjoyed this collection of short stories and poems, exploring different scenarios around the War of the Roses and Richard III. Made me think of turmoil of the time, the impact on normal people and a ‘what if’ of the Battle of Bosworth.

4.0 out of 5 stars Richard III
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI liked especially the poem 'Grief' and the stories 'The wife of Doncastre' and 'Richard Redux' - the last is an alternative history. Nice selection. Immediately interested by atmospheric cover.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Collection
Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseSuperb collection of short stories about Richard III. Hard to choose my favourites; they were all very good but for me Richard Redux, The Men and the Monument, and The Wife Beside Doncaster. The latter was interesting because it was based on a real, little-known event
