Rise of the Fallen (The Legacy Chronicles Book 3) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 170 ratings

"There were two words I uttered when I finished this book, "what" & "nnnnnnnoooooo". This book was a page turner, can't put it down, oh my goodness what next." -- Milja Saldarriaga

Book 3 of the Legacy Chronicles.

Society has fallen, crumbling amid the failed plans of a man named Hope. Beasts from Hell run rampant upon the green hills once denied to them, feasting upon life, awaiting their time of dominance. The time when the Fallen, led by Lucifer, achieve utter victory.

That time draws near.

But Jake battles on. He holds plans of his own, a tenuous strategy which will determine the future of all mankind. Together with his followers, he must trek across a globe bereft of technology, discovering mysteries both incredible and terrifying, in a last desperate attempt to close the gates of Hell once and for all.

And behind everything lurks the enigmatic assassin named Vain. Within him dwells something so devastating even the Fallen cower from it. In the end will he prove to be Jake’s ally… or the greatest enemy of all?

"This book, like the others in The Legacy Chronicles, has a non-stop pace that is both exhausting and exhilarating, but speeds up even more in the last pages, in a twist I never saw coming." -- Adina

"People died you wouldn't expect to die, people survived you wished would die (I'm sure that will come later) and it leaves you with a huge WTF unexpected ending (in a good way). " -- P. Kryske

AUTHOR RANKED TOP 10 IN ACTION ADVENTURE ON AMAZON!

Luke Romyn was born in Sydney, Australia, in 1975. His life since reads like something out of his novels: heavily entrenched in personal trauma, action, thrills, and adventure.

For over two decades, Luke has worked in the security industry; from bouncing in some of Australia's roughest pubs and nightclubs to protecting Mickey Mouse and the Disney crew from the overzealous jaws of tenacious toddlers. He's been bodyguard for celebrities internationally and chased feral pigs and snakes from jungle sets on Steven Spielberg productions. Luke has traveled the globe and spent time in some of the most amazing locations the world has to offer.

This experience fuels the Australian writer's ever-expansive imagination, and he pours it into his novels, combining fact with fiction, history with fantasy, delivering engrossing action-thrillers which leave fans gasping for more. Luke's quick wit has seen his social media following explode, and he is currently one of the most prolific social media celebrities in Australia, with several hundred thousand followers across the internet.

Publishing his first book, The Dark Path, in 2009 saw it voted in the top 10 horror novels of that year, even though Luke denies ever intending the novel to be classed as horror. Luke Romyn is now one of the most popular indie authors in the ever-growing eBook market and personally completes everything from cover art to final formatting, working tirelessly with editors so as to refine the best stories possible for his readers. The results are international bestsellers you're certain to love diving into. Hundreds of thousands of readers can't be wrong.

I enjoy Romyn's work because you can never quite be sure where he is leading you - there are so many unexpected twist and turns you never know where his characters might end up (in Sins of the Father, Hope goes from the White House to Gitmo to a Russian prison to other crazy places, none of which you would have expected). When I purchased the Rise of the Fallen, I thought it was the last book of the series - it is not, which leads me to want to thank Romyn and curse him at the same time, because I am excited to see how this series ends and am glad it continues.

Jacob Hope continues to be our atypical hero (a definite underdog who is a reluctant, uniformed, and unskilled leader) in this installment as he continues to stumble around in the darkness (literally and figuratively in this book) trying to fulfill his purpose. Whereas in the first book Hope doubted he was the Legacy and in the second book he was somewhat accepting of this, in Rise of the Fallen, he has now come to terms with who he is and what he must do. A still lingering quality, which was frustrating, is his indecisiveness at times, but, in all fairness, when he acted without fully thinking his plan of action through, at the end of the second book, he did send the world back to the technological dark ages. Sadly, for ourselves and Hope, this book does not contain the reveal of what is truly going on, instead we and Hope learn things bit by bit through different encounters (we are collecting pieces of the puzzle without a clue of how they fit together). In this installment, we do learn more about who Vain is and some of how he became Vain (though I doubt we will ever learn the full story). The last sentence of this book is a cliffhanger for the next, making me wonder if it is too early to pre-order it.

The good: There is a lot of character development in this book; Romyn's descriptions of characters leaves you with a sense of them having a past without him needing to include their back story (something that adds depth to the world he is creating); his descriptions, in general, help place you in the situation, making the scenes come alive; the words of wisdom given to Hope and conversational philosophizing give you a lot to ponder; I like how Hope is human, with human emotions and weaknesses; and the twisted sense of humor

    The bad: there were a few scenes that could have been shortened - it did not slow the story down, it just did not hold my interest (sorry, Vain, I was worried about Jacob); our hero is still lost in the woods and it's a bit frustrating (reminds me a bit of Alice in Wonderland);

If you feel touchy about an author taken poetic license with a sacred text in their work of fiction, you might want to avoid this because the world Romyn is crafting for Hope and co is one that reinterprets the Bible and world religion/spirituality in general.

If you love this series, I highly recommend Romyn's Prometheus War. Even if you don't like this series, I highly recommend Beyond Hades and Slaves of Valhalla (plus if you have made it this far in the series, you should keep going).

I did not receive clarifying lotion or the kwik sew pattern. I was frustrated that I was charged $ to find out how to contact Amazon.com to find out how to rectify the situation. I don't think that customers should have to pay to to find out how to contact customer care. After contacting customer care, I got a full refund and someone by the name of Maynard is enjoying my order. Hope he has better skin and a nice pattern. Suppose he might look good in a dress?

I read the first book thinking, wow different, entertaining. I like it. The second book, similar but it got slow at parts. By the end I knew that if another book came out I would buy it because I do want to know what happens. Then this book came out and the gloves came off. People died you wouldn't expect to die, people survived you wished would die (I'm sure that will come later) and it leaves you with a huge WTF unexpected ending (in a good way). The literal cliffhanger at the end means I know I will definitely buy the next book when it comes out. It's entertaining and reads quickly. Just buy it and enjoy if you have read the previous books in the series. If you haven't read the other books first, go do that then come back to this one.

Good, good book. Luke has an amazing imagination. Great characters.

Of the books read so far I found this to be one of the most difficult. It was not because of the writing but more of the path that Luke had the characters go through.

The title is truly telling of what is contained within the story. I am reminded of something I learned. now I am not sure if this was in a parable or just a song, that He is the potter and we are the clay. What most do not realize is the heat that is required to bake that clay. Luke certainly has brought that heat for Jake.

Do not be disheartened, this is very much a needed path. I have seen many say that some books are slow in their paths and are to large. For me I have been enjoying the full course meal that we have been given. Nothing is spelled out or chopped up. The characters are constantly being developed and growing stronger because of each trial. I cannot imagine these books any other way nor would want them so.

Again, I want to thank Luke for sharing his gifts with us and I will definitely want to follow to see other gits that he will be sharing with us.

It was time to upgrade my original Kindle Fire to the new HDX and I wanted the first book I downloaded to be special. Luke Romyn does not disappoint. Jake confronts new threats and challenges with his dwindling number of lieutenants and little help other than Vain's eucatastrophic appearances. (Vain would never allow himself to be used as a deus ex machina, but sharing some darkly-shrouded glimpse of hope is in character for him. I will be re-reading The Dark Path next, for reasons that will become clear to readers of Rise of the Fallen. No spoilers!) This book, like the others in The Legacy Chronicles, has a non-stop pace that is both exhausting and exhilarating, but speeds up even more in the last pages, in a twist I never saw coming. The next book can't come fast enough!

This author has a great imagination and quite the story teller. I've become a great fan of Vain, can't wait to hear more about him. Another good read.

The would be Jesus has been to Hell and back several times in reality and in the situational and yet he STILL trudges on in the quest to fulfill his promise to do what he promised; not to let all the good people die because of the forsaken. He continues on despite wanting to stop but only for himself if the Fallen will take him and leave humanity alone

5.0 out of 5 stars The Legacy Chronicles just get better and better!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 7, 2014
Having read both previous books in the Legacy Chronicles (and the Dark Path which gives the background to the Vain character) I was thoroughly looking forward to the next installment.
What evil would Jake Hope face next? What denizens of the pits of hell would he battle this time and would there be new characters to help him on his way. What will happen to his recruited Lieutenants and ultimately, where will his journey take him, salvation or Hell.
    again.......
Will he learn to use his powers or will they stay floating at the fringes of his control. Will he be able to finally bring peace back to Earth and save all existence? Slowly but surely Jake is starting to realise his potential but Lucifer still has many tricks up his sleeve!
I have said this before and I will say it again, Luke has an amazing way of describing characters and locations in his books. Giving you just the right amount to let you imagine hellish scenarios but not enough you make your mind crack, although you might come close! The characters are gloriously fleshed out but Luke is not afraid to leave any by the way side.
The Legacy Chronicles is turning into a monster of a series taking you all round the world and beyond!
I fully recommend The Legacy Chronicles but please start with Corpus Christi and then Sins of the Father first. Its not the kind of series you can just "jump into".
    Thanks Luke, 5 stars again.

I found this one harder to follow than the previous two but enjoyable nonetheless. I was saddened at some of the loses/sacrifices in this book but they were to be expected of course. The creatures that have escaped from Hell are damned scary but I suppose that states the obvious. On to book 4 now... :)

The third book in the series is as full of twists and turns, ups and some very sad downs as the previous books. As always Luke entertains the reader with a very descriptive writing style that has us you drawn into the realms beyond Earth.
How much more can poor Jake take?
I won't spoil any story lines but I will say that at one stage in this book I was actually crying, such is the connection you get with some characters.
Looking forward to seeing how this all works out.
    Thanks Luke
