A Life Half-Lived No More...

Hemophiliac Geoff Gilchrest has lived his entire life swaddled in figurative bubble wrap, thanks to his overprotective mother. Now he's free of everything except the prison of his own mind, where forbidden desires war against crippling self-doubt.

Geoff is a masochist. He craves his sex with a side of pain and degradation. But when getting shoved against a wall could result in catastrophic brain injury and even a moderate flogging could leave him paralyzed--or worse--it's hard to find a dom willing to step up and give Geoff the experiences he's been longing for.

Robin Brady has doubts of his own. Still stinging from massive violations of trust on the part of his drug-addicted ex, he has retreated to Saugatuck to start a new life. But the yearning in Geoff's eyes calls to him, and he knows that, armed with a deft hand and foreknowledge, he can give Geoff what he's been seeking, without putting Geoff's safety at risk.

First, though, he's got to convince Geoff to trust him--not just with his well-being, but with his pride. Geoff's injured self-esteem and trouble with communicating what he perceives as weaknesses, could end them before they have a chance to begin.

Amelia C. Gormley published her first short story in the school newspaper in the 4th grade, and since then has suffered the persistent delusion that enabling other people to hear the voices in her head might be a worthwhile endeavor. She’s even convinced her hapless spouse that it could be a lucrative one as well, especially when coupled with her real-life interest in angst, kink, social justice issues, and pretty men.

When her husband and son aren’t interacting with the back of her head as she stares at the computer, they rely on her to feed them, maintain their domicile, and keep some semblance of order in their lives (all very, very bad ideas—they really should know better by now.) She can also be found playing video games and ranting on Tumblr, seeing as how she’s one of those horrid social justice warriors out to destroy free speech, gaming, geek culture, and everything else that’s fun everywhere.

Ok, everyone, I LOVE BDSM romances, especially ones heavy on pain and sensation play, and this just rocketed to the top of my list! The scenes felt special, not just because they had to accommodate Geoff’s disease process but because of the emotional weight to them and the chemistry Ms. Gormley managed to achieve for our main characters. She clearly is knowledgeable and/or did an enormous amount of research on kink outside the typical impact play as well. I’m just obsessed, and I think I’ll find myself continually imagining what’s next for these characters for some time. Amazing book!

I can't imagine dealing with hemophilia on a day-to-day basis as well as having the dark desires and cravings that Geoff has. The way that Robin handles both hemophilia and the bedroom desires leads them on a very complicated and heartfelt journey.

The day-to-day experiences are not glossed over and are provided in great detail in some parts of the book. The pain that Geoff craves and Robin delivers may bother some. Please read the authors message before starting this book.

I understand what the author was doing. What better setup for conflict than a hemophiliac masochist who seeks a sadist to use and abuse him, no matter how risky it might be to his health? That premise intrigued me enough to buy the book. If you like detailed Scenes with all kinds of implements and toys, this is your book. I'm absolutely not a prude, but wading through these passages felt like just that - wading. I was more caught up in the sweet mundane details of their lives, like watching TV and cooking together. The Scenes were too scary for me, even though Robin took great care with Geoff even when leaving marks on him. I wasn't turned on; I was holding my breath waiting for something awful to happen. The discrimination and judgment they would deal with as gay men was addressed in a very real way. If Geoff ended up seriously ill with Robin's bruises and needle holes all over him as "evidence" for a criminal investigation, despite the play being consensual, it could have dire consequences for Robin. To say anything else would be to spoil the story. This wasn't a bad book by any means; it just wasn't 100% to my taste.

Holy Hell, such a well written book!
Hurt/comfort is a mild way to describe this one. So so good. They author gets you sucked in from the start. So much more than just sex. Learning to live with something you have no control over. While living within the parameters of it.
    100% recommend this book!!!

This is, without question, one of the best m/m BDSM books I’ve ever read. And that is saying something because I read a huge amount in this trope. I have just finished it and truly feel a bit speechless... But it was simply too remarkable to not take the time to leave a review immediately. This book... It is beautiful and loving and hot. It is everything.

My mini pre-review on Goodreads went something like this... "Finally! An author who writes a series in the crazy mixed up way I usually read them!" If you look through my previous reviews, you probably won't have to go back very far to see that I'm notorious for reading books out of order in a series. I don't do it on purpose... most of the time. Sometimes a book catches my eye and I request it for review or pick it up without actually knowing that it's a book that falls later in an existing series. I actually did this with the Saugatauk series. I read Saugatuck Summer before the prequel to the series, The Field of Someone Else's Dreams. Even though Risk Aware isn't listed as a part of this series, it definitely is, at least in my mind. Not only that, the timeline of this book falls before Saugatuck Summer because in that book both Geoff and Robin are already a couple. Now, of course I'm going to have to go back and re-read Saugatuck Summer... sneaky author. (But one I can totally relate to ;) )

Risk Aware took the BDSM lifestyle to a totally unique level. Because of Geoff's condition, he knew he could never have what he craved. Robin knew he could give him what he wanted, but not without Geoff's trust that he wouldn't go too far as well as Robin's trust that Geoff would be totally honest with him about his condition. They were walking both a physical and emotional tight rope.

I'm not sure which one of this pair I felt for most. Geoff had his reasons for keeping things to himself. His mom kept him in a bubble - or tried to. He longed for normal. Robin had been burned by his former sub and couldn't put himself in that position again, but he knew he could help Geoff. They had more than a few obstacles and almost lost it all... Throw in people jumping to the wrong conclusions - regardless of how well meaning they were - and things became even more complicated.

I have to admit that I almost passed this one up because BDSM books aren't my normal go-to. I'm really glad that I took a chance Risk Aware though. The life-style is a major part of the book, but the way the characters learn to trust and work through the obstacles that they're faced with made it so much more than that. It also made me realize that I need to search out more books by Amelia C. Gormley.

I received Risk Aware in exchange for a fair and honest review.

This book was beautiful. I have not read a book by this author before but if all her books are as well written and researched as this I will be happy to go in a spending spree.
Geoff is living with the very real limitations of haemophilia but wants desperately to act out some of his extreme sexual fantasies.
Robin is very willing to make Geoff’s fantasies come true. He researches and works hard to make it happen.
