DREW: Life dealing me a hard blow is nothing new. What's one more sucker punch?
When my uncle offers me a job working at his MMA training center, I jump at the chance to turn my life around...not upside down and questioning everything I know about myself.
Light Heavyweight Champion Asher Ramsey is the definition of a ladies' man. His stormy gray eyes and inked skin call to the artist in me and make me itch for my pencils and sketch pad so I can capture every detail. If I'm honest, they make me itch to touch every detail too, which confuses me.
After he offers to let me stay in his guest room, I discover there's more to Asher than he allows the world to see.
ASHER: My life is a lie. A play written and directed by my PR manager.
With the biggest fight of my career only weeks away, my focus is on securing my title. Losing my belt to some new up-and-comer isn't an option, and I can't afford any distractions. Or an unwanted attraction.
When Drew begins working at the gym where I train, my priorities waver. To make things worse, I offer to let him stay with me until he finds a place of his own. It'll be fine. Sure, I'm attracted to him, but I'm an expert at hiding behind the mask of a straight man. Besides, he's completely off-limits. Not that it matters--we don't even play for the same team.
What's the worst that can happen?

- Reviewed in the United States on May 9, 2022Hot, heavy and oh so addictive. Loved this story. You really feel for asher. You can tell he is living in hell of his managers and PR teams making. Not living his true life. Drew after some setbacks is essentially clawing his way up from rock bottom, due to some unfortunate events. They seem to be drawn to one another and asher helps drew out with a place to stay while he gets back on his feet. Asher has this unquenchable thirst for drew but drew has up until this point been straight, but can’t deny how drawn to asher he is. Loved this story and the tension filled moments of their building friendship. Super steamy moments and also touching moments. Of course there were moments to make your stomach clench and heart heart for both of them because of the corner they are backed into. Drew wants asher and loves him but asher doesn’t want to hurt drew with the fact that his live is behind closed doors. Asher wants drew more than anything but drew doesn’t want asher to give up all he worked for for him. Loved the ending. Absolutely perfect turning point. Love this author!!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 11, 2018Asher, an MMA fighter, is deeply in the closet at the insistence of his manager. When Drew comes to work for his uncle, Asher's trainer, the attraction is immediate. Drew is confused, he always thought he was straight. This is a brilliant journey of self discovery and love, with misunderstandings, angst and a very public coming out. I loved it.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 12, 2019This was my first read from this author and I must say I’m not in the least bit disappointed. These characters were great not to mention I love a slow burn! A little more time together would have been nice to build up their love; but it didn’t put the story off at all, it was simply them in their truth and it was quite fine with me!
4.25 stars!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 13, 2020Another good quick read from this author. I am a bit surprised this book was written prior to Scar, because I liked this one better. I'm liking this author's style so far. Just the right amount of angst, drama, and romance to keep me interested. Nothing too over the top. Just a good quick read with an HEA. Sometimes I need something fast when I don't have the time to dedicate to a novel. Good books, looking forward to more from this author.

There was much I liked about this GFY, MMA book. But I was left wanting after finishing the story. Here we have a down and out Drew, seeking help from his uncle and getting a job at an MMA gym. Our other MC is Asher, a MMA champion and celebrity who is gay, but uses beards per the urging of his management.
Let’s start with the positive:
I LOVE sports themed romanced and GFY/OFY trope. So this was up my alley.
I enjoyed the slow burn of the first 1/2 of the book.
The sex scenes were rather well-written.
Drew had some depth to him.
I kept reading the book.
Now on to things which niggled:
There was next to no MMA in this book. Substituting any other sport would have likely kept the story the same. If you have an MMA fighter, show me some fights!
I know very little about Asher. He’s rich and famous. He went to college. He has a tattoo. He drives a pickup truck. He lives in a large apartment with valet service. He’s gay.
Drew sometimes seemed to have no issues with his newfound love of all things Asher; and sometimes he did. He never talked it out with anyone. He went from wanting to keep their relationship hidden to “not wanting to be someone’s dirty little secret.” That’s a big 180 in the space of a couple of weeks for a once straight man.
Overall I liked it, but didn’t love it. I would have liked greater depth from both characters AND MMA included in the book. It does end with and HEA. It does have some burning kissing scenes, one during a storm which I particularly liked. This is the first MM book the author wrote. I’m not sure if she’s written in the MF genre, but I would have also liked a bit more complexity in her writing.

2.0 out of 5 stars 5/10
Okay, there were some things I liked about this book, not gonna lie, but there were many things that felt off so i cant really give it a harder puntuation.
First, the subtly misogyny: I didnt liked it in the slighty. There were some phrases that just… no. The mention of the tampon, for example.
Now, the main problem with the book was that their relationship feel rushed of. It started OK, but then, after just a couple of interactions, the mc admit to be in love with him. And just like that it gets really snappy for no reason. Snappy like “we’ve been together for 17 years and he is the love for my life forever and ever”, when in reality they barely know each other. We only have the sex scene and birthday scene, actually. And thats it. There isnt very much. We cant see the progress in their relationship besides that the main character narrates how “the next weeks they’ve being spending much time together”, and so it just feels off. Not really deep.
Then, the sport. Well, i dont actually expect many depth in this book it taking into account the genre but in this case it felt really plain and an actual backstory could have improved the story. The only thing we know is that he train in a gym with Pete, he is a champion, and he needs to battle someone else who wants to take his place. We dont know any other thing of his career which strikes me as odd. I understand this book is short, but i would say that making it longer and explaining things throughly would have make it worth it. It could even help to construct their relationship.
Then, the coming out. Well, the issue for me there it was that Asher didnt want to come out for himself. He didnt want to destroy his career (which is completely understable) and he was afraid. I would have liked it if he decided to come out for himself, for a future of him that doesnt have to hide of who he is, for showing something to the world, for being more comfortable in public or other reason. But from what you read, it seems that the value they are trying to show is “you need to sacrifice everything for another person”. And thats exactly what they said. Even the main character believes that for Asher to care for him he has to drop everything and even if it cost his career, because that is “true love” or some other b.s. Not only this is really toxic and dependent thinking, but they arent even in that level of intensity in their relationship, so its even odder.
Now last thing, the “straight” trope. Main character who doesnt know he likes man but find the other character the only exception, of course. But no, they dont explain that the main character is bisexual and dont have the main character question his sexuality at all. And they show it like he doesnt feel attracted to other man, only to him. Dont say this cant exist, but the premise is actually kind of biphobic.

I fell in love with Asher and Drew right from the start. This is a sweet and amazing GFY love story. MMA fighter meets his match when he meets the down on his luck nephew of his trainer. But the closeted fighter thinks he has to hide his true self because of his career. But as there relationship crumbles because of this he has to figure out to either live without the live of his life or shock the world with his relationship. This book will keep your heart gripped till the very end! Loved it

I really enjoyed it enjoyed the story of Asher and Drew.
The story flowed very well, they had great chemistry and I enjoyed the will they won't they kind of dynamic they had. And how hot the explosion was but it happened.
I liked the character development and the chances they realise they need to take to be happy.
Overall a great book
