Risking it All: An M/M, rockstar, second chance romance (Kingston Brothers Book 4) Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 127 ratings

Ten years ago, I kissed my best friend.

Six years ago, my life changed and I went from being an unknown kid from a small town to a world-renowned rock star. Before leaving Gaspar, I told Ali we’d still be together. I made promises I didn’t keep, and I lied over and over again. I threw our plans out the window and made a life for myself.

I’ve barely had time to go home, because touring keeps me away. We haven’t been in touch in years, but after this tour, I’m heading home to find the only person who knows my deepest, darkest secret, and beg for forgiveness.

Ten years ago, I kissed my best friend, and his name is Alejandro Barerra. My Ali.

He may never forgive me for the broken promises or for breaking his heart, and I’m afraid he’ll never want to talk to me again, but he’s the only one who knows the real me, and I’m determined to win him back. Even if it means risking it all.

Review

There's no rating I can give this book for what it deserves. What this book does brilliantly, it gives you ALL THE FEELS while bringing to light that inner struggle of finding who you are and embracing it. -Bonsies Books

Merrick Kingston's love story was absolutely perfect and so emotional. If you have never tried m/m then this is an absolutely great book to start with. - Joceyln, Goodreads reviewer

This was one of the most heart wrenching, yet sweetest love stories that I have read in a while. - Christina, Goodreads reviewer
As far as gay love stories go, this was one of the BEST I've read. A MUST READ.
- Romance Book Lovers Haven

The MM you didn't know you needed. Filled with love and feels, Lucero writes a perfect MM with lots of angst and passion. -Author Gabrielle G

What a perfect way to end a series. Isabel's approach to the subject matter was beautifully written, she showed insecurity, vulnerability and also strength in these two men

Growing up in small-town Ohio, Merrick and Alejandro didn't have anyone to talk to about being gay - until they found each other. Best friends throughout high-school, they were also each other's first love, but that was a secret. They made plans for their future together - but real life got in the way when Merrick's band got an offer to record an album. Without giving Ali any real warning, he left town. In doing so, he broke Ali's heart. The band then took off and Merrick became a hugely famous rock star, meaning he didn't come home for any extended period of time for a long time.

Finally, on an extended break from touring and recording, Merrick returns home to Gaspar . He knows he's still in love with Ali, but he also knows he may have absolutely no chance with him after the way he treated him over the years. Merrick is exhausted form working and touring, but even more exhausted from hiding who he is - the only person in the world who knows he is gay is Ali, and they haven't spoken for more than 5 years. He is finally ready to share who he is with the world - starting with his brothers and then his bandmates. He knows it's going to take a LOT of work for Ali to trust him again. But the one thing he knows for sure is that he has to try.

Merrick does the work to get Ali to trust him again, but as I was reading I wasn't sure whether I would be able to forgive Merrick if I was in Ali's shoes. Though he always loved Ali, Merrick made REALLY big mistakes. There was no good reason for Ali to ever trust Merrick again, especially because Merrick had betrayed his trust more than once. It felt like Merrick was stringing Ali along for years until he was ready to come out of the closet. I had a bit of a hard time connecting to Merrick's character because of that. But in the end, Merrick does the really hard work, and he grows a LOT as a character. Ali grows too - he learns that trust and forgiveness are powerful and can sometimes lead to real, true happiness.

I loved the epilogue where we get a glimpse into their lives several years into the future. But I also really liked the fact that at the end of the book was Merrick's statement to the press - the one he made when he finally came out of the closet and told the world who he is, and who he loves. I thought that was SUCH a great thing to include at the end of the book, and it was a fantastic conclusion to the Kingston Brothers series.

Four years between purchasing and reading, and I can still remember when these characters were almost caught. Although I have taken a different road since reading book 1 to 3, I feel it is only right to leave my opinion on the last of the series.
Isabel Lucero has the ability to draw you into her thoughts and characters traits and decisions. Some good, some not, but I am glad that Merrick and Ali found their forever after so many years.

I had high expectations for this story, and they weren’t all met. But I still liked the book.

Through many flashbacks, we get the struggles of young people discovering their sexuality and their feelings for each other, while in more recent events, it’s the coming out publicly that is the focus of the story.

Some of Merrick’s decisions made little sense to me, and made me wary of the character. Which isn’t a good point as he’s the main character. And Ali’s reactions–or more precisely non reactions–annoyed me. He was too much of a doormat to make me feel for him. And when you can’t relate to the characters, it makes it difficult to fully appreciate the story.

But I appreciated the side characters, and I really wanted to see how Alejandro and Merrick could end up together after so many years. And though I guessed the ending right at the beginning, I still enjoyed Merrick’s grand gesture. Not the best gay romance out there, but if you love your rockstar in love, you’ll love this story.

What can you say about Merrick Kingston, one word Awesome. The youngest brother of the four and the one with the biggest secret. Merrick Kingston is not only a Rockstar, he is a Great Friend and even better Brother, but it’s his Friend Ali who holds his heart.
Ali Berrara is a man who knows who he is and what he wants, a schoolteacher, a great son and brother but he is a man who has always held on to the fact that Merrick Kingston would be the man who completed it all.
Merrick & Ali have been best friends since high school and the attraction could not be helped but do you risk it all to have it all that is the question that needs to be answered. They will go through so many emotional ups and downs but in the end will love be worth risking it all.

Risking is all is a second chance love story between Merrick and Ali. They loved each other for a long time, first as friends and then more and then Merrick leaves to be a rock star and he stays in the closet. Each of these men have something to risk when they come back together. For Ali there is trust that he will not be left again for the career, for Merrick it is the risk of loving out loud in a way that no one else knew that he did. This one was poignant.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

I’ve been reading Isabel Lucero’s books for a while, but RISKING IT ALL was the first M/M of hers I picked up. I mean – a friends to lovers, second chance rock star romance – what’s not to like? Add to that quality writing and well fleshed-out, complex characters, who have quite a bit work ahead of them in terms of their own evolvement throughout the course of the story, and you have the easy, steamy read that is their story.
