About the authors
Fred is the strategist helping to bring Rock, Paper, Scissors to as broad an audience as possible. Having learned the framework from Will nearly ten years ago, and seeing time and again the power it has, he’s now using both his training in psychology and his background in building high-performance teams to show leaders how it can work for their companies.
For over twenty years, Fred has focused on delivering results within hyper-growth, multinational Internet and professional services firms. He developed computer-integrated manufacturing capabilities that revolutionized printing, making small quantities of customized business cards and other products affordable for everyone. Fred has also held a variety of roles in the US and Switzerland, including orchestrating global manufacturing capabilities expansion, leading enterprise business transformation initiatives and global software development teams, implementing organisational design strategy, managing professional services technology practices, and providing general management. He’s been on the advisory board of emerging-markets businesses in China, India, and Japan, and his entrepreneurial experience includes developing two start-up technology services companies in the US. Fred lives with his family in the Greater Boston area, US.
Will is the brains behind Rock, Paper, Scissors. He initially developed this fast, agile, and effective leadership framework to manage a crisis and has refined it over two decades with
fantastic results. A leader himself, he has a passion for cultivating enduring relationships at work and securing strategic partnerships to achieve outstanding outcomes. This comes as part of creating a cultural environment in which transparency, capability, and individual personalities are key.
Will is senior vice president of global operational excellence and engineering at Firmenich, the world’s largest privately owned fragrance and flavour company, and the chief supply chain officer and executive vice president of Cimpress NV, as well as a member of its management board. Will also served as general manager of Columbus, a major engineering and product development start-up programme at Cimpress. Prior to that he was vice president of operations industrial adhesives EMEA of Henkel, and he served in a number of leadership roles in supply chain, operations and safety, and health and environment in the chemical sector earlier in his career. Will is the founder and managing partner of LeadToSuccess, a bespoke advisory, coaching, and training firm based in The Netherlands. He currently lives in Geneva,
Switzerland, but also spends time in his home town of Maastricht, The Netherlands, where his
family is based.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 14, 2019I found this to be a practical guide to how to quickly move to productive work relationships. You won't always know the people on your new team but you will need to quickly build relationships and deliver. This book helps get the ball rolling. This book won't show you how to deliver but it will help you get off to a positive start with regard to your working team. After reading this book, I am not sure that anyone is a perfect Rock, Paper, or Scissor but knowing someone's inclinations no doubt helps you understand how best to begin a relationship or build a work process. This book is a good primer for those in roles where they have to build new teams or work with new clients.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 13, 2019This is a must-read for leaders who want to build more productive and engaged teams. I found the Rock, Paper, Scissors framework to be extremely simple to grasp yet broad enough to help me better understand the individuals I’m working with immediately, and it particularly helped me appreciate differences between myself and others in a more positive and productive way. The book also gives practical and actionable insights on how to apply the framework in business and daily life, and really helps the reader take action to build more balanced teams. Overall this is a well-written, succinct, and enjoyable book that provides a lot of value per page read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Constantly know oneself and put some proven techniques to develop self awareness.
I was struggling with a former boss who I had a fallout because of some irreconcilable work differences. This book made me understand my ex boss more and allowed me to work with my new boss better. Although I couldn’t get rid of my former boss, as we have projects that we need to work together, instead of working with him (a paper) I worked with his scissor developer. As a scissor and paper myself I used my personality style to implement multiple projects with a fellow scissor. Our team had been going great and I no longer need to be frustrated with my ex boss. I actually find it amusing just observing him and knowing how I can maneuver my way with people. I wish I had this book since I started my career, things could have been easier for me.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 8, 2019A very interesting and simple concept, to understand behaviors and adapt to different situations but compared to other books that I have read, this is very pragmatic. It is easy to read and straight to the point and gave me the opportunity to reflect of past experiences but also on current ones.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 8, 2020This book is a big help in knowing what colleagues’ talents are at work.
Clear and well explained concepts.
Also got it as a gift for a friend who is moving up the management ladder. This will help her.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 7, 2019This easy and enjoyable book provided me (someone who often-for better or worse-finds himself as part of a team in my work environment or managing people as part of some civic volunteer organizations I participate in) with a number of great insights into how to be a better team member and manager. The author's point out (and then provide many helpful ancedotes from their extensive work experience) that each of us could fall into one of three broad categories. Rocks are acheivement oriented, paper are "people persons" who are good at interpersonal skills and bring people togther and scissors are great at crunching numbers - there is a bit more to it than that but I don't want to give away the whole book. The premise of the book is that if you slow down when meeting someone, observe closely how they carry themselves and/or set up their work environment and ask some questions you'll have a great chance of being able to understand what motivates them. When you know and accept it without any value judgement since each broad personality type has their pros and cons you'll best understand how to get along and get the most from your time together.
In my professional and academic lives the fallacy is always that somehow being part of a dysfunctional team some how magically gives you the skills to do better next time. I truly believe that that the insights in this book will be a game changer for anyone who wants to understand how to find greater success when working (or living) with another person.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 17, 2019Story about how great the writers are, but with limited value add for reader. Made-up, over-simplistic framework without bases in science
- Reviewed in the United States on October 15, 2019This book was recommended to me by a friend and I found it quite original in it’s approach. It delivers clear guidance, almost a short cut, to understanding that a successful team is one that contains different talents and helps the reader understand and identify their own characteristics also. In a football (soccer) team it is easy, as a defender identifies themselves as a defender, but in a business environment, it is likely that a defender doesn’t know they are a defender and the leader of a team full of defenders, doesn’t understand why his team scores no goals. This book certainly helps.
Humans are complicated and emotional beings and a high performing team is most often one that has a leader prepared to invest in his/her team and understand them and their motivations. This book does a good job of trying to simplify the charchteristics necessary to make up a high performing team and also to understand why your team is not performing.
It clearly shows that the authors have been through and experienced the up’s and down’s of leading people, as shown by the examples contained in the book. That is a refreshing change from academic theories.
A person’s characteristics, here simplified into the rock, paper and scissor categories are broadly similar no matter from which country, culture, gender or language your team originate. This book is invaluable for a leader/manager in this multicultural workplace that we work in today and I only wish that messers Lennox & Jacobs had written it 20 years ago and saved me a whole load of painfull self learning.

5.0 out of 5 stars Verbeter razendsnel je leiderschap kwaliteiten

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent read about modern and agile leadership
This book is one of the best leadership books I read in the last ten years. It is simple but not simplistic and easy to use. The way the book is set up with many stories made me just continue to read.

The media could not be loaded.
There are many stories in the book and the summary at the end of each chapter is very helpful.
Recommended for anyone that is a member or needs to lead newly formed teams and deliver quick results while having fun.
