Romeo & Julian Kindle Edition

3.6 3.6 out of 5 stars 39 ratings

O Romeo, Romeo! Wherefore art thou Romeo?

Forget Shakespeare, this is definitely one love story you haven’t heard.

Two men, two polar opposite walks of life.

Romeo Monroe is a successful model for one of the world’s biggest names in men’s underwear. Rich, charming, and exceptionally great-looking who also happens to be single.

Julian Carmichael is a successful construction worker and also single. Thanks to his father’s hefty financial investment, Julian is able to live a comfortable life.

So why the single status?

Because they’re both closeted homosexual men.

Both their parents work in high-profile industries and have their own secrets—a strong hatred for homosexuals, and these two men have a lot to lose if their secret gets out.

There’s an instant attraction. Their worlds collide, and these two star-crossed lovers start a dangerous and steamy affair.

Will they survive it? Or meet the same tragic demise as William Shakespeare’s ill-fated lovers?

A contemporary re-telling of Shakespeare’s tragic play, with a modern day twist.

J.O. Mantel is an Australian author, and he loves creating characters that his readers fall in love with. He always had a love for reading from a very young age, and at night, could be found curled under the covers with his favourite Roald Dahl or Morris Gleitzman book. When he finds himself in a situation where he doesn't fit in, or things get tough, he escapes to a world of fiction.

He has a huge passion for writing and tries to do as much of it as he can, while juggling two regular day jobs. J.O. doesn't write your typical romance stories or romantic characters because let's be honest, that's so boring and not what all readers want!

And sometimes it's not always about an Alpha male, your average heroine, characters falling in love, or happily ever after's.

It was when random strangers started talking in his head, that he realised there were stories that needed to be told. And who was he to argue? After all, everyone wants that fictional book boyfriend that's so deliciously perfect in every way, right?

When he's not sitting behind his desk at a computer, he's busy constructing his latest creation with his crazy Lego obsession.

Did not enjoy as much as I hoped. Would not have purchased it if I knew what it was going to turn out

In this re-telling of a Shakespearean classic, Romeo Monroe and Julian Carmichael deal with prejudice in their own families. When Julian's dad backs him into a corner, he takes drastic measures. I enjoyed the modern angles and twists, keeping this story so similar to the classic.

This is my first book by this author and the title definitely caught me. I though a m/m retelling of Shakespeare...sign me up.

The story didn't disappoint. Both guys come a family that are homophobic and they have to hide their sexuality and their relationship. Their family holds their fate in their hand, but they will have to make a decision that could be life or death.

I will say that even though Romeo was hiding from his family I loved how he was super smitten with Julian and went balls to the wall ( no pun intended). I wills ay however that the guys both seemed much younger than they were said to be.

Overall a good retelling to this classic.

Romeo and Julian is a modern, gay version of the famous Shakespeare's play. It has all the categories of the original version: tragedy and comedy.

There were some things that didn't work for me:
    1) The setting of the story. I think the idea of having a movie director (Julian's father), living in San Francisco who's a homophobe doesn't work. Movie directors or anyone in the entertainment business who's not progressive or do anything immoral or unethical will get the boot, no matter how famous or how successful they were.

That goes for morning talk show host of a San Francisco morning show. In this story, we have Romeo's parents as homophobic talk show hosts in San Francisco. Hmmm. Also side note, they make $1M a year. I think that's a bit low for a popular show and wouldn't necessarily considered rich in SF.

    2) Ages of the main characters. They're both in their late 30's and still living with their parents. And apparently still afraid of being cutoff from their inheritance despite having their own successful careers. I think it would worked better if they were much younger where they were dependent upon their parents so the threat and fear of their parents are more palpable and realistic.

    3) The conflict seemed forced. And wouldn't convincingly lead to mortal fights. I think if they were families from competing gang or Mafia members then it would have made more sense.

    What did work for me:
    1) Interesting characters
    2) Intriguing plot
    3) Hot scenes

Romeo is a famous underwear model who comes from a wealthy family. However he has a big secret he can never tell. He’s gay. His parents are homophobic and of his secret ever comes to light he’ll lose everything he’s worked so hard for.

Julian runs a successful construction company. His parents are extremely wealthy and are force to be reckoned with. He too has a secret that can never come to light. His parent are homophobic and his life would be ruined if they found out the truth.

Julian comes across Romeo at his parent’s party. He’s immediately taken by Romeo. Once Romeo lock eyes with Julian he makes it his mission to meet this man. Sparks fly between these two and it doesn’t take long for them to declare their love for one another.

With the two of them having so much to lose they’re not sure if they’re love for one another will be enough.

This author truly has a gift of making an out of the box idea come to life. This is a completely different take on the classic Romeo and Juliet but at the same time it has a comforting familiarity. Very well done.

I voluntarily reviewed an advanced copy of this book.

I gave this book 3.5 stars.

This is a modern day, M/M version of Shakespeare's famous play. It's a quick, easy read with comedy and tragedy mixed in. Romeo is a famous underwear model from a very wealthy family. Julian has a very successful construction company. Both have a very big secret that neither want their homophobic families to find out about. But when Romeo and Julian meet for the first time, sparks fly. Will they sacrifice everything for love, or walk away?

This was definitely an interesting take on Romeo & Juliet, but in M/M form.
Themis storyline was unique & original as Ive read a few other m/m versions of this storyline.
The book seemed like a quick read and had great characters. Some parts seemed very over done and some other things were like huh to me… I don’t want to give away the storyline so read it & you might see what I’m saying.

I was worried how close this would come to Shakespeare’s ending! It was a little to close for comfort for a bit.
The two main characters were both very similar and radically different at the same time. Romeo is the shining star, the golden boy. Julian is in construction. They’re both the only sons of successful, wealthy parents. Parents who are about as homophobic as can be.
It’s a heartwarming story, not as tragic as I feared.

For me this didn’t sit in either camp, retelling of a classic or reimagining of a classic, neatly and it kept my brain bouncing. The characters are young by today’s standards (19) which was also slightly bamboozling and made some lines not make sense…Julian’s sister is w years younger but also working as a nurse in a hospital? Might try another book that doesn’t have a retelling element.

A quick easy read. It bring up the issue of families and homophobic people and abuse.
So take it with a gin and tonic and enjoy the read for what it is.
