RomperSuit Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 13 ratings

The first rule of Investment Banking is ... you do not talk about Investment Banking.

How do you continue to put in the hours, throw the punches and land the kicks in the Square Mile when your heart has long since left for your life in leafy suburbia? When your heart has long since left for your wife and your two soppy toy dogs?

When you’re a success amongst the big earners, a face acknowledged and head-hunted (quite literally) by rival City firms, leaving the Square Mile behind is never as straightforward as you might hope. Your true colours aren’t just nailed to the mast; they’re tailored into the lining of your Savile Row suits.

RomperSuit charts Charlie Campbell-Fuller’s journey through the corporate world of City boys pushing up stock prices and trading slaps, big risks taken and savage thrashings dealt out for even bigger rewards. But the beat of batons on riot shields has started to follow Charlie back home to suburban summer barbecues, even stalks him at the fertility clinic and threatens his friendships and marriage alike.

As the two halves of Charlie’s life collide, will City life (and death) succeed in a hostile takeover? With split loyalties, multiple deceptions and sharp-suited violence reaching a crescendo – what will be the ultimate price for that year-end bonus?

After reading through many of the reviews I could not wait to get my hands on the RomperSuit. I am an Investment Banker by trade so I thought it would be entertaining to catch an author's perspective on what it is like on the inside of a world like mine. Man, RomperSuit hit the nail on the head.

The ego-driven, fast-paced world of investment banking can be a scandalous filled adventure of sorts where you are always feeling like you are sprinting downhill. It is hard to keep up and stress eventually moves you to the slow lane of life. This book oozes with real-life undertones while being uplifting, engaging, and challenging for the reader.

The writer has a masterful style and writes with a grace of an educated literary scholar. The dictation is perfect, the tone is unique, and the description is one-of-a-kind. Ex. "At Old Street, you shape your body as if to alight from the train. You swing to face the oncoming platform, ready to exit from the carriage if any untoward groups attempt to board."

Allen Jarvis has a gift and that gift shines through in RomperSuit. The editing is marvelous, the story is precise, and the author leaves you splendidly entertained. You will not regret this read.

    Two thumbs up!

The cover to this book says "Bankers... when you thought you couldn't hate them more" I am never the one to back away from a challenge, so I decided to pick this up.

This story takes you through the life of Charlie Campbell, through both his corporate work life, and his hectic home life. It's a struggle to balance everything, and the main conflict of the story is the balance, and trying to stay afloat in this crazy lifestyle.

This book is very well written, and balances the work and personal life storylines as well as Charlie balances them himself. The pacing was veryeven throughout, and the suspense kept me reading longer in each sitting that I normally do. I honestly finished this book very quickly, because I was so INVESTED in the story. Did you get the joke I made in that last sentence?

Overall, I thought it was very much worth the purchase price. It was very interesting and exciting, even though big parts of the book center around everyday happening for some people.

Oh, and in regards to the challenge? I failed, I hate them even more...

“RomperSuit” offers both brilliant writing and mesmerizing characters whose lives and fates are constantly interconnecting with one another. It's a perfect curl up and read book for anyone who likes the electric tension and cut throat drama. This book has sharp teeth. The characters are fleshed out nicely and easy to connect with. Charlie has a lot of layers to his personality, but even the minor players are well developed. Between that and the non-stop action I stayed hooked on this one from start to finish. It's very much an escapist book in that once you start reading, you forget about everything else and just immerse yourself in the story. And I really appreciated that the twists kept me from figuring out how things would go until they were going. I hate it when I can see how something will end halfway through, but “RomperSuit” kept me guessing to the very end. Highly recommend.

This book sounded like an interesting yarn. Take someone like Sherman McCoy, the self-designated "Master of the Universe" and arrogant investment banker of the Tom Wolfe classic "The Bonfire of the Vanities," and put him in a gang warfare story like The Outsiders or the film West Side Story. And it's in London, England, the financial capital of Europe.

Ultimately though, with all its local dialect and name-dropping, such as discussions of local football (soccer here in Canada and America) teams, London bank and street names, investment banking terms and history, this book doesn't feel inviting to me. I understand if the dialogue is local, but the prose is also all local. It feels like only an investment banker who actually works in London would get through this book with ease.

One puzzling aspect of this book is the notion that investment banker firms are so driven by loyalty to the team that they engage in street warfare. I wasn't sure if that was actually intended to be reality in the story or imagined in the mind of Charlie, the narrator of the story. But seeing how Charlie's wife reacted to his injuries at the end of the book, I think such gang warfare must have intended to be real. Then the question arises of why a group of wealthy people who work long hours would be interested in gang warfare. Ultimately, though, I moved on, deciding the book must be satire and intended to convey investment banking as a brutal business, even if not physically harmful through their antics.

I really liked the friendship of the trio of guys who bonded together long before the story started, and continued to do so. The sexual hijinks added some spice to the story.

The author writes really well. I think I would enjoy the book much better if he made it much more accessible to the reader, and saved the strong jargon for the dialogue only. There is a purpose to "dumbing down" - investment banking in London is something that needs to be conveyed to the reader in a way that makes him feel part of it.

Again, since the author has a knack for story-telling, I see great things for this author in the future.

5.0 out of 5 stars London's Fight Club

Picked this one up after reading Brotherhood by the same author last year. The themes are similar in both – London-based married men seeking thrills away from their normal day-to-day lives to help justify their existences. In Brotherhood the protagonist sought thrills of a debauched nature, but in Rompersuit violence drives the story forward. In both novels too, Canary Wharf is the epitome of evil – here is it even lovingly referred to as ‘Bandit Country’ by the narrator, Charlie, and his workmates. Charlie’s at odds with a career that has long since become downright dangerous. His wife Lane has plotted an escape route for them both, a lifestyle of beaches and child-rearing, yet Charlie still buzzes off the excitement of his profession. What, against any other backdrop, could be a straightforward middle-England crisis is instead thrown into sharp contrast against the violent and sometimes ludicrous street battles that drive Charlie’s story forwards. Recommended.

Rompersuit is the story of Charlie, a former football hooligan who's now progressed to cracking skulls for an Investment Bank in London's Square Mile. Charlie embodies, exaggerates and explores what it is to layer on our disguises for a day’s battle at the office and then attempt to shed those same masks and behaviours once in the sanctuary of home.

Charlie’s motivations may well be recognisable as those of many thirty-something professionals; he’s truly sick of a vocation fought for (in his case, literally) and achieved during his twenties, now dispirited with the world of finance and the violence meted out as part of his job. Even Charlie’s narration retreats from the first person to the second person during his working hours distancing himself from his profession, from his business, its troubles.

Brutally funny, nostalgic and heart-rending, each of the characters in Rompersuit reveal their human side within its text, if not always to one another. A true epic for the now-all-grown-up British geezer.

One of the best books I’ve read in a long time.

Hard to classify or put labels on it – except to say it’s great, full of the unexpected and the outright shocking. It’s also poignant, reflective, nostalgic in parts and humorous in many others.

Brings new meaning to “getting served at the bar”!!
