    Squad 9 leader, Roth Masters, works with Hell Squad to fight the aliens. Though his team is mostly female soldiers, they're just as tough as any other Squad out there. But it's one woman who really has him twisted up. Avery Stillman was a respected Coalition Central Intelligence Agent prior to the invasion, but ever since being pulled out of an alien genesis tank, all she remembers is the beginning of the negotiations between humans and aliens and that she failed. As Roth challenges her to take back control of her life she realizes that there are secrets in her head and that could change the course of their fighting.

    What I Liked
    There was so much new information in his one and I loved getting to see the beginning of the invasion. I won't say much so I don't give anything away but Avery really had some doozies trapped in her head. I look forward to how these new developments will continue to grow in future books and how they will affect the overall alien invasion story. We've seen Roth almost from the beginning, as his squad helps out Hell Squad but this time we really got to see more of his mostly female team. I can't wait for their stories because I love tough women in romance and Anna Hackett always does a great job with writing them. I particularly liked Carmyn's feisty attitude and the fact she's not afraid to say whatever she's thinking.

    What Needs Work
    The only downfall for me was that I just didn't really connect with Avery. I had nothing against her and she doesn't do anything to annoy me, she just never worked 100% for me. I've really enjoyed Roth's personality and feel like he's such a significant character since he's been around since the first book. I did enjoy this book for it's alien elements but I just wish I had enjoyed the developing relationship more.

    Roth is the 5th book of the Hell Squad series by Anna Hackett. While technically stand alone since each book focuses on a different couple's story, the series has an overall arc so it is best to read the books in order. This is the story of the leader of Squad Nine, Roth Masters, and special agent Avery Stillman whom he helped rescue from an alien genesis tank in one of the former books. Avery has been a mysterious character since her rescue and Roth is convinced that she knows more about the alien situation than even she realizes. It turns out he was right. Once Avery's memories return, a whole new reality opens up for the survivors in Blue Mountain Base which could help in their efforts to turn the tide against the aliens.

    The story was very different from the first four books, the pace moved steadily, and the main characters were engaging, endearing, and entertaining. I've always liked Roth, and found his role as the leader of a squad made up mostly of female soldiers very interesting. It seems to me that Squad Nine has many stories left to tell. Avery took a bit longer to warm up to. I understood her situation turned her defensive and left her feeling vulnerable, where she was not used to feeling that way in the past. She was definitely not prepared for her feelings towards Roth. She eventually won me over as a reader, but it took a bit. I liked that both characters were strong in their own right. I also liked that the overall storyline of the series seems to be moving in a new direction. The author continues to grow her world, and I appreciate that.

    The bottom line is that the story was good, the characters were wonderful, and I was thoroughly entertained as a reader. This is arguably one of the best sci-fi romance series currently being published. I highly recommend it.

    Avery had been fighting to become more of a member of Blue Mountain Base than just a rescued refugee. She was captured and held by the Aliens, even put into one of their tanks all because as she states: “The President sold out the populace for sanctuary and turned me over to the Aliens.” She wants to be cleared for duty so she can join the fight against the Aliens. The problem is, she doesn’t remember a lot before her capture and nothing of her capture except being pulled from the tank.

    Roth leads a mostly female team of Darkswift pilots and has his doubts about Avery. He interrogates her as often as he is allowed. He’s unsure if she is a spy for the Aliens or if she was truly who and what she says she was: A negotiator that was double crossed by the President of the Collation. Having been the one who pulled Avery from one of the Alien tanks, he’s not sure. She fights like a soldier, but the records do not name her as one of the negotiators. She is a mystery and he doesn’t like mysteries. But he is drawn to her.

    After a fall, Avery begins to remember things. One of the things she remembers is a map on the President’s desk, conversations of his plans to: Save humanity by secreting away in a secure, well-stocked location.

    Avery and Roth and his team go on a recon to try and locate the secret sanctuary. Their Darkswift is taken down by Alien dragonflies and they are saved by a young boy.

    Is the secret stronghold real? Can they find a way to save themselves and the boy? Is Avery really who and what she says she is? Avery and Roth have more to discover than the location of a possible sanctuary.

    Am Anfang war ich wirklich nicht begeistert. Roth war zu Avery schlichtweg ein A mit Ohren und ich mag es gar nicht, wenn eine Frau sich einem Mann, der sie mies behandelt, an den Hals wirft und ihm damit zeigt, dass er sie ruhig weiterhin schlecht behandeln darf. So war es leider zunächst und es gab auch keinen direkten Wendepunkt, keinen Moment, an dem Avary Roth mal mit ihren Supermoves auf die Matten geknallt und ihm gesagt hätte, dass er zur Hölle fahren soll. Stattdessen haben sie dann rumgeknutscht und Roth wurde allmählich sanfter, mitfühlender, fürsorglicher Avary gegenüber.
    Das gefiel mir persönlich überhaupt nicht, da immer gesagt wurde, wie unglaublich stark und selbstbestimmt Avery ist und sie dann aber mit ihren Küssen zeigt, dass sie offenbar überhaupt keine Selbstachtung hat. Das passte in meinen Augen einfach nicht zusammen bzw. widersprach ihrem Charakter und wirkte auf mich so, als müsste man sie plötzlich kleinhalten, damit sie sich in die Liebesgeschichte einfügt.
    Sehr schade.
    Ansonsten habe ich diesen Band geliebt und später war die Beziehung der beiden wirklich grandios und heiß – wenn man den Anfang vergisst.
    Auch wie sich die Lage mit den Raptoren immer mehr zuspitzt, war fesselnd zu lesen. Und das spannende Katz-und-Maus-Spiel zwischen Aliens und Menschen ist faszinierend und sorgt für reichlich Action und Drama.

    Wer kein Problem damit hat, dass sich eine vermeintlich starke Protagonistin wie Dreck behandeln lässt und den Kerl dafür mit Küssen belohnt, wird bei diesem Band durchweg gut unterhalten sein.
    Wer hingegen wie ich ein Problem damit hat, muss nur die ersten Kapitel durchhalten, denn ab dann wird das Buch einfach klasse.
