3.7 out of 5 stars 65 ratings

To solve an eerie murder, one detective must break a cardinal rule: never let the case get personal…

Alex Penfield's gunshot wounds have healed, but the shock remains raw. Working the beat could be just what the detective needs to clear his head. But when a corpse washes up on the Chesapeake Bay, Alex's first case back could send him spiraling…

As Penfield and his partner examine the dead man's fortress of a house, an army of surveillance cameras takes the mystery to another level. When the detective sees gruesome visions that the cameras fail to capture, he begins to wonder if his past has caught up with him. To solve the murder, Penfield makes a call on a psychic who may or may not be out to kill him…

His desperate attempt to catch a killer may solve the case, but will he lose his sanity in the process?

This was very entertaining book to read as I had no idea who the killer was and I really still have no idea who possessed all the people who committed the murders

Really did not like the story because it made no sense. However it kept my interest to see horse it would end

I am going to say upfront that I agree w/ some other reviewers on some issues w/ jumpy scenes and as I was reading I was wondering where we were headed but I persevered and all the threads came together! It really had me engaged and reading almost straight through. I was reading while waiting in line at the bank. I definitely enjoyed it enough to read the next one!

I liked the plot, but hope Mr. Stephens learned better writing skills. I didn't like the jumpy scene changes nor the ad nauseam details. Some I suspect pads the story. There was not really any completion to the plot, and left me with a lot of questions.

I really enjoyed this first book and will continue with the series. I love a good mystery and the characters were well developed.

I am not sure what to write for this review. It starts out as a usual detective police protocol type story. Main Characters are a Detective and his partner investigating a missing person. The story goes on through the book on this, then some Spiritual type things start happening and now everyone is second guessing who cause these things to happen. Quite a odd twist to this story.

This mystery kept me up well into the night!! So good. Well written. Well told. Creepy characters. Creepy surroundings. Creepy dreams. Violence.
I am a mystery fan, but not a paranormal fan. I have to say that is the only issue I have with this book. I feel the ending was not satisfactory. Not logical enough for me.
I was gifted an Audible version of this book from the author through Story Origin. The narrator was perfect for this mystery. He brought out the mystery, the creepiness, the attitude of the story. I really enjoyed listening to his voice for those hours.

This isn't my typical read, but I was hooked from the start. A great book, and the rest of the series isn't to be missed!

I have been a reader of Mr. Stephen's Maui Murder series and decided to give his Alex Penfield novels a try and he did not disappoint. From the first page I was intrigued and couldn't put the book down. I had to know more of what was going on. I can't wait to read the next book!
