Ruined World: A post-apocalyptic romance novella Kindle Edition

4.0 out of 5 stars 327 ratings

When humanity is destroyed and all that’s left is chaos, what would you do for love?

Harper Daniels doesn’t expect much from others. And her douche boyfriend is a prime example of why. She definitely should have broken up with him, instead of agreeing to accompany him on a camping trip into the Oklahoma wilderness. But on the whole? She’s doing okay.

Until she’s lost in the remote mountains, alone and afraid.

Reclusive ex-Marine Noah Ramsey lives alone in the Wichita Mountains. And that’s exactly how he likes it. So when the way-too-talkative Harper shatters his solitude, he’s not prepared for the risk she poses to his heart.

And when news of a deadly virus sweeping the world forces Noah and Harper back into town, their struggle to keep each other at arm’s length becomes a struggle to survive. Because civilization has fallen and it will take all their courage and determination to survive the threats posed by this new apocalyptic reality.

The stakes keep getting higher... Can Noah convince Harper he can keep her safe, before it’s too late?

This is a 20,000 word prequel novella; Book 1–Forsaken World– is now available for pre-order. For fans of Kyla Stone, T.L. Payne, Kate L. Mary and Kate Morris. It is mature content, written for 18+ readers.

Jacqueline picked up her first Mills & Boon novel when she was 14, and fell head over heels in love with the romance of a happily-ever-after.

Sweet Valley High just couldn’t compete after she got hooked on dashing heroes and plucky heroines.

She has a Bachelor Degree in Print Journalism but, having always been tempted to embellish the facts of a story, decided she was more suited to writing works of fiction.

She writes in between wrangling two daughters and my very own tall, handsome husband. *wink wink*

    Setting: Oklahoma Wilderness-Wichita Mountains
    The Story:
Can I just say how much I love good world building book series that have multiple books in a series that multiple character's stories rather than just one. I love it. Kate L. Mary does it with her Broken World series about the zombie apocalypse and Jacqueline Hayley does it here with her The After series involving the Sy-v or Syrian Virus that kills part of the human population.

I love watching the slow build of destruction (is that morbid?), for instance when Noah goes to town to get supplies versus when he later takes Harper to town the difference are day and night. I appreciate getting to see the small details in the beginning hinting at the virus versus the result that they didn't think would happen (well that Harper didn't think would happen, Noah was on board that it was the end much earlier).

I also like the mention of characters that we have the possibility of seeing later in possible future books. Olivia, Harper's sister who wasn't found in this book, and Becca who we meet in the second half of the book briefly before our MC's head to town. I feel like I need to go reread the whole series now.

Harper Daniels: or Harpy as Noah likes to call her, is our FMC. She is chatty little ball of energy she reminds me of a few people I know. I won't lie I was a bit worried about how it started with her hiking out in the middle of nowhere with her boyfriend but as most books about the apocalypse they quickly do a 180.

Noah Ramsey: is our MMC. He is a reclusive ex-marine living out in the middle of nowhere. He only has regular communications with Chaos through radio. He was lucky enough to already have a great setup at his cabin for an end of world situation, but he is not a prepper. I loved his character, gave me grumpy sunshine trope vibes.

That scene that Noah brushes Harper's hair, IYKYK.
I'm still mad at Chaos for his terrible timing.

    Favorite quotes:
"The world may be teetering on the edge of ruin, but right now–here with this man–Harper had never felt safer. “You’ve saved me twice now.” She pulled back so she could look up at him. “Next time, it’s my turn to save you.”"

"There was something in his eyes, a tenderness she’d never have believed him capable of. “Harpy,” he breathed. He hoisted her into his arms, her legs automatically gripping his waist. Face to face, he rested his forehead against hers. “You’ve already saved me,” he admitted. “I didn’t know what I was missing until you crashed into my life and showed me.”"

I highly recommend this book and all of Jacqueline Hayley's The After series to all dystopian and apocalyptic/post-apocalyptic genre fans who love some spicy romance mixed in with it.

This quick novella gave us a glimpse of the world just at the beginning of everything changing in the world.

The book itself was okay but it was really short, lacking in detail and pretty unbelievable. We have a virus and in a matter of just days we have a whole brain washed cult made from the people the next county over. Pretty unlikely. This totally incomparable couple also fell in love in less than a week....nah. It was a good start but needs lots of work and a couple hundred more pages. I see no reason to read the next one.

Reserving a 5 score until I read what happens next. This was a semi soft beginning that I assume is setting the stage for the next book. I do like where this is going. Hopefully the next book will be a longer read.

    1 star for the cover
1 star for effort of writing a story and putting it out there.

This was much more a romantic short story than anything else.

It was more a rough draft that needed a lot more flesh.

The fact that it was a very short made everything that happened seemed ridiculous.

Her boyfriend proposes to her and then becomes her ex. He dies the next morning of a virus still unknown to a lot of people.
Instead of being torn up about her ex dying and the virus, she falls for the stranger that lives alone in a cabin in the woods. In an even weirder chain of events, he falls for her too, in such a way that he goes all Rambo and singlehandedly saves her from a sect. Yes, a sect. This all happens in less than three days, in which time, the world has been infected and only the ones immune to the virus is alive. However, the existence of the virus seemed to have been a big surprise to everyone. So presumably everyone across the world just got infected at the same time and started dying at the same time. So while citizens still wasn't even remotely aware of this virus that could take out the world overnight while someone was away on a hiking trip for one day, the army was already planning on bombing cities to ensure it doesn't spread. (Scratching my head here)
Some atempt to additional drama has been made with a crashing airplane, abduction and a religious sect, but failed miserably.

    Not a favourite.

....that this was a (short) novella when I downloaded it. I also had some elements that were very familiar...I'm almost positive I haven't read it before. Nevertheless, that familiarity and the novella thing made it not as enjoyable.
    It was okay.
    Sincerely,

I thoroughly enjoyed this prequel to the Ruined World series. In some books you have to read quite a bit to get into it but not this one it was immediate and I now want to read the series. Hopefully, it'll be put on KU.

Was just starting to get into book and it ended. I’m not sure 🤔 what happened but this could have had more depth to it. And a better ending. Not saying I hated it, just wanted more.
