Rules to Follow (Davey's Rules Book 1) Kindle Edition
Travis Miller has a pretty solid life in the small California beach town he calls home. He’s working his way up in the district attorney’s office, he owns a home with an ocean view, and he has close ties with his family. Life is good. If only he could find a sweet boy to call his own, life would be… perfect.
Adam Nichols’ life has never been easy. Growing up in foster care taught him to be strong, so finding himself in a violent relationship was a shock. Now that he's finally free of it, he faces new problems. He's jobless, homeless, and terrified of starting from scratch.
With a little help from an old friend, Adam discovers a whole new world. He goes from rock bottom to renting a room from a hot assistant DA and working at Daddy’s Lap, a kink club that opens his vanilla eyes to things he’d never imagined. His new roommate is a balm to Adam’s damaged soul. The tender way Travis cares for him is almost like the Daddy kink community he’s seen at the club. But Travis isn’t a Daddy… right? If he were, surely he’d have said so.
What happens when a lie by omission threatens to bring their budding relationship tumbling down around them? Will Travis ever be able to earn Adam's trust again?
This is the first book in a new series about not-so-perfect Daddies, adorable “boys,” and one sassy brat with an insane list of rules. Grab your fan and tissues because this series comes with both a high heat advisory and all the squishy feels you’d want from a Susan Hawke book. Possible trigger for references to domestic violence.

About the author

I’m a happily married mom whose kids are grown! I've always written stories, but only found the courage to publish in my 40s. This midlife career change has been amazing and proves it's never too late to follow your dreams. I plan to keep writing for as long as my readers want my books. I love sharing the stories of the different people who live in my imagination. My books are filled with humor, a few tears, and the underlying message to never give up and keep hoping, even in the darkest of times, because life can change on a dime when you least expect it. This theme comes from a lifetime of lessons learned on my own hard journey through the pains of poverty, the loss of more loved ones than I’d care to count, and the struggles of living through chronic illnesses. Life can be hard, but it can also be good! Through it all I’ve found that love, laughter, and family can make all the difference, and that’s what I try to bring to every tale I tell.

All reviews are voluntary and my honest opinion.
First we meet the titular character Davey. He comes off a little overbearing at first because of his list of rules and the fact that he expects other people to be mind readers. But beyond that initial briefly shaky introduction, Davey is actually quite endearing and even admits that he needs to let his potential suitors know about the list of rules. He's definatly a brat, and a queen with a capital Q, but Davey is someone you want on your side, a loyal and caring friend.
We're also introduced to Daddy Travis on this date. He immediately breaks three of Davey's rules, and is banished to the island of misfit Daddies to await a more suitable match, as a main character in this volume.
Adam is a sweetheart fleeing an abusive relationship. He has some of the characteristics of a little, without actually being one, and often colors with some of the littles at the club where he works.
This particular book contains one of my favorite tropes -- a sweet and caring daddy who likes to feed his boy, and take care of him. Travis is definitely not a disciplinary Dom.
This is a really nice beginning to a series that I'm looking forward to reading more of. Susan Hawk has a very gentle and innocent way of introducing scenes and kink lifestyle that I don't necessarily see in other books, and it's something that really makes me like her unique perspective when I need something softer. It's not necessarily something that I'm always looking for, but when it comes to her novels it's one of the factors that continues to keep me hooked as a reader.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 8, 2020Davey’s Rules is a new series by author Susi Hawke writing under her contemporary romance penname Susan Hawke. Hawke is well known for her fluffy books filled with hot sex scenes, adorable couples, and a bunch of snark and romance. “Rules to Follow”, the first book in the Davey’s Rules series, delivers on everything that the Hawke brand promises while furthering exploring the more kinky side of Hawke.
Davey is a bartender at the exclusive Daddy’s Lap club, a BDSM club focused on the Daddy/boy kink. Davey is on the search for his perfect Daddy and has created a list of rules that his perfect match will have to fit. The list is at 89 rules with more pending – so of course it’s going to be a nearly impossible task for Davey to find his perfect Daddy. On his relationship quest, Davey goes on a date with Travis, a Daddy Dom who breaks three of Davey’s rules within the first fifteen minutes of their date. However, Davey and Travis become friends and Davey soon sets Travis up with his friend, Adam. Poor darling Adam. He’s a lost man trying to survive an abusive boyfriend, until finally he’s had a enough. Adam escapes to Davey’s home where Adam’s life finally changes for the better.
The slow burn and steady building of the relationship between Travis and Adam was sweet and adorable. Even the sex scenes were scorching hot with a side of cuteness. I never knew how much I needed a romantic scene of a Daddy Dom hand feeding his boy while cuddling. My breath literally caught in my chest, it was so darn hot and sweet.
Hawke’s writing has steadily improved since her first book, and I felt that her writing style was pretty smooth in this book. Davey’s characterization was a bit over-the-top and sometimes flirted with being a caricature, but although it toed the line, I didn’t feel like the line was crossed. I hope Davey’s character gets more depth and development as the series goes on. Overall, I really enjoyed this series and hit all my kink buttons just right. If you haven’t liked other Susan Hawke books or don’t like Daddy kink, then I suggest you skip this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 14, 2019Susan Hawke has done it again! Adam and Daddy Travis were so stinking sweet! I have always loved Daddy kink but I think this is my favorite because Travis is the kind of Daddy I'd want. He's so caring and thoughtful and he's EXACTLY what Adam needs after his last relationship. Adam is so strong and smart but he's also a little broken. An abusive relationship left him reluctant to trust but there's something about Travis that he can't resist. Oh and let's not forget Davey, Adam's friend and former college roommate, and the one who introduced him to Travis. Davey is super outspoken and a little crazy but he's squarely in Adam's corner. This book has tons of laughs, a little danger, and an abundance of sweetness. I highly recommend this book if you like shy boys, super sweet Daddies, and exuberant best friends.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 14, 2019I don't normally write reviews, however this book is a must read! Can't wait for the next book in the series.
The list of Davey's rules at the end just made me laugh and wonder about why & how they came to be on his list.
Adam and Travis were so sweet and I loved their connection. Of course, I just wanted to smack some sense into Travis a couple of times when he had opportunities to disclose being a "daddy" several times. He was just such a sweet "daddy" though that by the end I definitely had to forgive him. Adam was such a strong character - I loved that the author had him not be extremely weak when it came to his ex, but yet did portray his vulnerability when faced with his ex.
I am definitely looking forward to the next book in the series. However, the book that I really hooe the author gives us is Davey's! Davey meeting and falling for his "daddy" is going to be EPIC!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars So sweet and fun
This was a great start to the series and the end of the book left me with a big smile.
Some of the subjects in the book are hard and treated accordingly, but the sweetness between Travis and Adam, the amazing Davey and the fun some of the other characters bring alleviate it.
I loved Adam and Travis, they are a perfect match for each other and i hope to see more of them in the next book.
Very nice book, hard to put down

4.0 out of 5 stars A quirky uplifting read
No plot spoilers
There are some potential triggers relating to domestic abuse
The book is centred around Daddy Dom/little boy but Adam is not a tiny little although there are some references to baby play.
There are some graphic sex scenes all MM.
I totally adored the book, the feelgood factor is off the charts.
The characterisation is excellent, and the storyline really well balanced between show and tell, the book moves along effortlessly.
Although not in the lifestyle I found this book well written and the characters flawlessly crafted. It's a love story and I would definitely purchase more by this author. In fact, I'm about to read Davey's story.

3.0 out of 5 stars Darvey oder doch Adam?
