The Case of the Runaway Client (Caster & Fleet Mysteries Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 358 ratings

Will Miss Caster and Miss Fleet see their names in lights?

When Katherine and Connie take on a case at a music hall, they enter a new, exciting, and frightening world.

The duo are hired to calm the nerves of Ellen Howe, top of the bill at the Merrymakers Music Hall. She keeps freezing on stage, though she insists that nothing is wrong. It seems like an easy case - until Ellen disappears, leaving only a note behind her. And the rest of the cast are giving nothing away.

Katherine and Connie have to win the trust of Ellen’s fellow-performers to have a chance of finding her. But the deeper they plunge into the world of the music hall, the more secrets they must hide from their families and loved ones - and the more danger they find themselves in, as the threats against them turn from words to actions...

Can they see through the glamour of the stage to find out what really happened to the missing star?

The Case of the Runaway Client is the second book in the Caster & Fleet mystery series, set in 1890s London.

how can I say this - even better than the first. In the first book, all of the characters and their connections and the settings needed to be established while also solving the mystery. In the second book, the characters and there bonds made solving the mystery so much more hazardous and gripping. THE CASE OF THE RUNAWAY CLIENT is only the beginning of the story. What follows puts all of the players at risk and in danger. A very enjoyable read.

A good read but not quite as good as the first. Seems to have lost some of it's Sherlock Holmes vibe. Although the romance angle is sweet - I'm not sure that Connie would have been quite as forward when you take her upbringing into consideration.
A letter from the Doctor has them intrigued. There is something going on in the background of the star of his musical hall. His star has frozen several times and that is beginning to worry him. Add in a disappearance, a new act at the music hall, two dead women, a battered wife, a battered reporter and threats. Will the two unlikely friends find out what has been happening on the darker side of life? Will their respective romances progress further? Will Connie ever get away from her overbearing mother?

I've enjoyed both books so far and will definitely keep reading! The two ladies - from different social backgrounds - who accidently meet (in the first book) and become friends and partners in sniffing out answers to crimes - are fun to read about, with their personal ups and downs as well as the crime-related parts and bits of romance. (My favorite small detail is the new popularity of split skirts and bicycle riding for women!)

Lots to like about this series: delightful characters, good use of the Victorian London setting, and interesting plots. The mysteries are clever, but this is a character-driven series and there is some romance along the way (nothing that could be called offensive) that adds interest too. A nice evening's read.

A good read.Take two ladies of different social levels ,add a interesting case set in Victorian-era London, stir in some well rounded characters, and serve up a quite enjoyable story.I am looking forward to the next book.

The characters are pleasant, the story goes on just a bit too long, at which point this reader started to lose interest. On the whole, not bad.

It's a good job I didn't have anything to do on the day I finished the first chapter with a cup of tea, because all I did until I finished was to top up my teacup. I love the ladies, I want to borrow Albert to go to a music hall with, and I have more than an itsy bitsy crush on cheeky James King....

Caster and Fleet are at it again, trying to get to the bottom of a music hall mystery, a young woman has disappeared and the lady sleuths have to go undercover to find her. There is also a bit of romance. This book will make you smile, I had read the previous one in the series, and this had introduced me to the characters.
