Runaway Fate: A Paranormal Women's Fiction Novel (Moonstone Cove Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 4,281 ratings

It’s paranormal women’s fiction for lovers of magic, mayhem, and a solid afternoon nap (when they can squeeze one in.)

Katherine wasn’t looking for anything extraordinary in her life. She had a job she loved, a husband she adored, and a home in the beautiful seaside town of Moonstone Cove.

Okay yes, she worked too much and had fallen out of touch with all her friends, but that happened to everyone, right? And sure, she was feeling a little creaky in the mornings and couldn’t drink coffee after noon, but that was just life in middle age.

Four minutes was all it took for fate to run away with anything that resembled normal. Now Katherine is trying to place mysterious psychic visions into her previously ordered life. She’s playing referee between a displaced Southern mama and a sarcastic mechanic with a chip on her shoulder. And her quiet life has been upended by a mysterious rash of violent acts by students at her school.

Thankfully, her new friends have powers of their own, and together they just might discover who or what has it in for the quiet citizens of Moonstone Cove.

Runaway Fate is the first book in the hot new Paranormal Women’s Fiction series, Moonstone Cove by USA Today bestselling author, Elizabeth Hunter, author of the Elemental Mysteries, The Irin Chronicles, and the Glimmer lake series.

Great series starter!
I’ve never had a chance to sample Elizabeth Hunter’s novels so when I saw this book pop up on amazon when I was searching for something paranormal, I decided to take a chance and read it. WOW! I’m really glad I did! This book held me captive for hours! I love the idea that three women come together to solve a mystery after learning they each have psychic powers. I also think it’s pretty cool that each book will feature one of the three women from their newfound friendships. I will admittedly miss Katherines POV (she’s extremely sharp and intellectual; made me feel like I did when I was in college for psychology) but I know Toni’s story is going to keep me just as entertained. Before I end this review, I want to mention that this book is much more serious than cozy mysteries. Sure, readers of that genre will still probably enjoy this one, but the subject matter is much heavier than those in a cozy. This one may contain triggers from some people (gun violence, potential suicide, and harm to an animal). Cozy mysteries are typically a lot lighter and don’t have triggers. This book does! If you enjoy Elizabeth Hunters novels or are simply looking for something refreshing and compelling, then I recommend grabbing a copy of Runaway Fate! I enjoyed this book way more than I thought it would and felt an easy connection with the characters. 𝗠𝗬 𝗥𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗡𝗚: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

This was another amazing creation by Elizabeth Hunter. Following the the awesome trio of Glimmer Lake, we are introduced to another trio, except this time they are complete strangers to each other. From the onset of the first page, it went from intriguing, to exciting , to just plain exceptional. I must say, the first chapter was a great way to start this new series.

Whereas the Glimmer Lake ladies were already besties when their abilities came to them, Katherine, Toni and Megan were all complete strangers living in Moonstone Cove. They all happened to be at the Gym on the same day when their abilities came to them, and one event that they all played a part to stop from happening, brought them together. From the point they all saw each other again at the police station, was a start to a best friends relationship. They eventually all work together to shed light on the mystery that Elizabeth Hunter has created and threw them into. It starts with Katherine, and a connection to the first event and the school she and her husband, Baxter, are professors at, and from there you will not be able to stop turning the page. As this first book is from Katherine's POV, we get to see her relationship with Baxter, and you will be envious. It also explores Katherine's background more, and the lack of friends she has and needs. Thus, leading to the developing friendship with Megan first and then Toni. The mystery surrounding the crazy event at the gym, was just the start, and the three work together. Their banter so funny at times, it had me laughing out loud.

Each lady has their strengths and weakness, and each of them comes from a different background. All three ladies are so well written and so relatable. I believe anyone who reads this book is able to identify to at least one of these ladies, since they are so different from one another. How Elizabeth comes up with these characters is unfathomable to me, but they are wonderful.

I highly recommend you pick up this new series of Elizabeth Hunters. She has a writing style that is so easy to read and her characters are so well developed. The words just flow effortlessly from the page to your eyes to your brain, and you can't help but devour each and every page until you have come to the end. I was implanted into the book and felt I was the fourth character in the group of budding best friends. You really do feel like you are part of her stories. This is the start to another great trio of books, following these three awesome ladies. I loved all three of them.

Runaway Fate is Elizabeth Hunter’s 4th novel writing as part of the Paranormal Women’s Fiction (#PWF) collective, an association of female writers of paranormal fiction, centering their stories around mature women in the middle of their lives instead of the typically young and clueless heroine. The first three books, the Glimmer Lake trilogy about three long-time women friends in a small town that after a traumatic event suddenly develop paranormal abilities, were quite well-received and successful. This first book in the Moonstone Cove trilogy has a slight connection to the previous books, but it focuses on a new group of women who didn’t know each other before the traumatic event that unleashes their psychic abilities has them bonding. They are from wildly different backgrounds, and normally wouldn’t have struck up a friendship.
The heroine of this book, Katherine Bassi, is a physicist, with a fullfilling career at the local college, happily married to another absent-minded professor. They don’t have children, but are still very much in love and in tune with each other. Although Katherine is well liked by her colleagues and her students, she doesn’t have any close friends. But trying to solve the mystery that surrounds their shared traumatic experience lets these very different women become friends…

I really loved this book, everything from a great (though maybe not the greatest) first sentence, since that distinction clearly belongs to Jane Austen, the superb pacing, to the riveting resolution of the mystery was just so well crafted. I also like how well grounded in reality and well researched this story was; it just made the paranormal elements / psychic abilities of the three women so much more believable, as they appear so plausible. And last, but not least, I also really liked the campus-setting, which reminded me a bit of Gaudy Night by Dorothy Sayers, which sort of was the first campus mystery. I can’t wait to see what the three friends get up to next, what mystery is going to test their abilities and how the dynamic between them is going to develop. Next up is Toni, the mechanic with empathic abilities, and aside from the mystery, we are also teased with more of a romance, since at the ripe age of 41 Toni is still single…

Okay, this book was simply amazing! I was giggling or snorting while tearing through it, frantically turning page after page because it was so captivating and I needed to know what was happening and, of course, who did it!
The perfect mixture of a charming intriguing heroine and her friends investigating in a mystery that kept me guessing and second-guessing and turning the pages while at the same time telling a wonderful story of friendship and love and shared laughter - and shared wine, of course. Such an amazing book and promising start to a new series, I really can't wait to read Toni's story in the next book!
