2023 saw the release of "Delirium Wilderness", a coming of age fantasy and roughly a prequel to "Dead of November: A Novel of Lake Superior": a far-reaching ghost story published in 2020. In 2022 he published “Curve of the Earth: A Novel of Lazarus": the spiritual journey of an immortal Lazarus. In 2007 his first novel was the middle grade “Marty and the Far Woodchuck”. - Reviewed in the United States on July 5, 2023I purchased this book a while back, but, wanted to set aside some uninterrupted time to read. I know the family personally so I knew the pain would run deep while reading it. I will begin by saying I cannot even imagine how difficult this book must have been for Jessie to write in the midst of her pain, caring for and losing her only daughter. I purchased this book to use as a resource for any one I may come across who has a sick child (specifically one with any kind of cancer) to help them in their journey.
This book has a “Wow” factor. I was blown away at how very detailed the information was. I particularly loved the chapter on “Making it Fun”, and how one can allow their child to be in control, since there are so many things during their time of illness they cannot control. Surviving and Thriving has a wealth of knowledge, helpful hints, and deep love of caring for Phinley. Even though there were no pictures included in the book (and this could have been because of privacy issues), you painted an adorable picture of who Phinley was and the little girl who transitioned from life to death. She touched so many lives, and she will live on forever in our hearts and spirit.
To the author Jessie, may God always bless you, Travis, and the boys as you navigate through your new normal. You are an incredible person, a friend, and now I am proud to call you a best-selling author.

I also found helpful info and ideas of many ways we can help and support the patient and the families; things they need and things to help make their stay easier. Ways we friends can help a patient and family to … Live their best life while in hospital!

- Reviewed in the United States on May 31, 2023When going through an unfamiliar and journey is quite a life altering process. This book is so detailed and easy to follow. I cannot fathom having to go through any life changing with a child that is so sick. I know this book was written with love from her heart to help others that are on a similar difficult journey. This book should be in every pediatric doctor’s office and office.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 2, 2023What a wonderful resource! I’m familiar with Phinley and her story and bought it to help me as a new grad nurse working in pediatrics. It’s full of things I would have never considered thinking about as a nurse and helped put perspective on what the family’s of my patients are dealing with. I keep it in my locker at work for a quick reference. It’s very comprehensive! A must buy for family and healthcare workers as well ❤️ I’m actually debating bulk buying for my hospital!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 22, 2023This book is a must read and an invaluable resource for parents of a child who is hospitalized. Jessie is honest and bold in sharing her very personal story.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 7, 2023This book is well written. I bought two copies, thinking I would have one available to give someone, sometime, with a hospitalized child, and have already given that copy away. It contains a lot of information that will help parents and caregivers to feel empowered rather than overwhelmed. This is a much need resource!
