4.4 out of 5 stars 139 ratings

A scarecrow has ONE job. Scare the birds.

Sam wants to do his job well, he really does. But he’s got a problem…

He’s a scarecrow who is allergic to feathers! Sam decides it’s best to find another job and that’s where his adventures begin.

Kids love to follow Sam on his journey of self-discovery, acceptance, courage and friendship, and grown-ups love the underlying message: it’s hard to accept yourself, but it’s the most important thing.

My kids (4 and 3) loved this rhyming story and the lovely illustrations that accompanied it. My son loves to do the sneezing for Sam, especially at the end when (spoiler alert :) ) those sneezes save the day. And we had fun going back through the book to find the hidden items!

It was fun to read this with my son. Watching the scarecrow go through different jobs to find his"perfect" job was fun. My son had a lot of fun going back through the book after reading about the hints the author put in the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Clever and funny - a pleasure to read!

Sam the sneezing scarecrow has it pretty tough. Scarecrows aren't supposed to sneeze, so Sam tries out a bunch of other possibilities (none too successfully)... This clever book had me smiling throughout. I enjoyed wondering what idea Sam would come up with next (and why it might fail). I think kids 3 and up will really enjoy reading Sam the Sneezing Scarecrow over and over! I'm definitely adding it to my list of books to give as gifts :)

5.0 out of 5 stars Ah-Ah-Ah..... Great Story!

Poor Sam indeed! It's not easy being a scarecrow, especially when you seem allergic to birds. The fantastic team that brought us Ellie and the Cupcakes is back again. We LOVE that story, and this pair, Amanda Kidd and Noor Alshalabi make an excellent team for children's books. Just the right mix of delightful colours, bold and confident pictures with storylines that are gentle, pleasing and with a big heart. Young children are surely to be as entranced with this tale as Ellie's, and this time it rhymes as well. Sammy the Sneezing Scarecrow has real trouble with sneezes and tries all manner of other professions before finding out that really, being a scarecrow is what he does best. The story bounces along nicely and we even go to Space and back no less. Lots of nice touches, like handkerchieves to count (and more) were not apparent till i found the sheet at the back of the book. One of the best 'activity pages' I've seen in a book - which will make it a joy to read again and again.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Book About Self-Acceptance
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 21, 2020
This is a beautiful story about knowing and accepting who you are. We read this book tonight as bedtime story and both of my boys (4 and 8 yrs) were fully engaged, as we followed scarecrow Sam on his journey to self-acceptance. The illustrations are incredibly beautiful, and the rhymes flow smoothly, which makes for a very satisfying reading experience. The best part though was that we ended up discussing the how the kids are similar, how they are different, and why they are just perfect the way they are. Similar to Sam they came to the conclusion that self-acceptance is important for your mental health and happiness and that it's also the basis to being accepted by others. I'll recommend this book to our local library.
