SEVERN: A Viking Tale (Kingdom of Durundal - Age of Heroes. Book 9) Kindle Edition
A LEGENDARY KING
A POWERFUL WARRIOR
A DARK PROMISE
Twelve-year-old Severn survives a raid on Orkney, but Magnus, King of the Vikings, hauls him away from his home and back to Norway.
Though timid and frightened at first, Severn learns to embrace his new surroundings and grows to become one of the greatest warriors of his time. However, in the struggle between family and loyalty, between personal ambition and commitment, there will be no easy path. But a man with a warrior's courage may be able to find it. Such a man is Severn—warrior by instinct and Viking by nature—he has yet to reach his finest hour.
A rousing adventure of courage, treachery, duty, devotion, majesty, love and battle, as seen through the eyes of a warrior adjusting to a different world.
'It's not how you die that defines you—it's what you fight for in life.'
What readers are saying:
★★★★★ Polished and sharp and very clever. I dare you to read the first chapter and not be hooked. Bradley Andrews. Amazon Reviewer.
★★★★★ An accomplished story of love and betrayal, honour and death, told during the Viking age ... with a remarkable twist at the end. Mia Burrows. Amazon Reviewer.
★★★★★ I never saw that ending coming. What a stroke of genius. What a stoic way to portray an antagonist that was so instrumental in the series. The story itself would be enough, but the telling of it by Sharon Turner in her exquisite style and attention to detail makes her rate among the literary masters of the trade. Writers House

HISTORY OF THE KINGDOM
There are none who can say with certain knowledge when the Kingdom of Durundal began, yet this has not stopped the dragons, the kings, the sorcerers and other wise-ones from seeking the answer. What we do know is that dragons ruled supreme and considered by many to be the Dawn of Time.
This was a time when Elves, Dragons, Humans and Forest Folk were all at peace and lived in harmony—but in time, something changed.
Power and Ambition.
The Fates stepped in with a prophecy; a prophecy that proclaimed a 'chosen one' would rule the kingdoms with knowledge and wisdom and bring peace to the realm. However, the Dark Lord in his rage and eternal damnation vowed he would do everything in his power to stop it.
And so it was—the Dark Lord became unstoppable as his Disciples of Death searched out the chosen one. Barbaric! Uncivilised! Numerous! It is said that the earth cried blood and the barren soil left behind bore no fruit. The dragons disappeared, the Elves retreated, the Forest Folk went underground. Hearts were broken, loved-ones were lost, thrones were burned, and the kingdoms were in turmoil. Many said that darkness would prevail and man would never be understanding of acceptance and remain beyond all evil.
Yet—there was hope. The Prophecy was beginning to unfold; and with it came the Age of Heroes.
Welcome to the Kingdom of Durundal.

About the Author
I survive on a happy diet of historical and fantasy fiction and I particularly enjoy a good Viking Tale. My favourite authors are Bernard Cornwell, Joe Abercrombie and Madeline Miller.

About the author

The magnificent Kingdom of Durundal ~
Series Information:
The Kingdom of Durundal is an award-winning epic 12-part fantasy/adventure/drama that boasts a wealth of researched history, mythology and folklore.
Book 1 is 'A Hare in the Wilderness' where the child of prophecy has been chosen by the Fates. Her task is to prove she is worthy of leading her people out of the darkness and into the light. The next 10 books follow the journey of those who cross her path - directly and indirectly.
The animals used in the titles of the first five books are totems; symbols of courage and strength, guides and talismans.
Books 6, 7, 8 introduce the Sorceress of the Sapphire and how the prophecy is finally fulfilled.
Books 9, 10, 11 expose the back story behind several of the key characters. Who they really are and what changed them; for the greater good . . . or for the worse.
The Prophecy is book 12 and a prequel to the series. This book details the origins of the prophecy amid the dawn of time - when dragons, dwarves and elves ruled the kingdoms and the Dark Lord vowed to plunge the kingdoms into eternal darkness and rule with fear.
Inspiration comes from my interest in the past; in ancient civilisations and dynasties; the kings, emperors, dictators, leaders and religious ambassadors. The Kingdom of Durundal is an epic 12-part-saga, steeped in layers of blood-feuds, warring deities, and at the centre of it all - the common people fighting their own battles in order to survive.
Books in the series are:
1) A Hare in the Wilderness
2) A Wolf in the Dark
3) A Leopard in the Mist
4) A Stag in the Shadows
5) A Moth in the Flames
6, 7, 8) Sorceress of the Sapphire parts 1,2,3
9) Severn
10) Sable
11) Sagitta
12/Prequel) The Prophecy
I had a specific reason for writing 12 books, as the number 12 carries religious and universal data in addition to mythological and magical symbolism. It represents perfection, completeness and holds a significant value in astrology. Notably, all my dragons in Sagitta ( Book 11) are named after the constellations.
When people read these books, I hope they enter a world that they will never want to leave behind - a story that, when retold, reveals even more than the first time around.

Book 9 in The Kingdom of Durundal series
Severn is a true tragedy. It is also a story of the long and difficult road to manhood by the protagonist, Severn; his terrible losses, triumphs and the powerful way in which these events shape him and change him for better and also for worse. It is also a love story, in fact more than one. Severn is a well-developed protagonist and you care for him right from the start, when you meet him as a young boy in Scotland; a boy who sees his family killed and who then is taken by the enemy to live in a strange land. This strange land is Norway, and his captor is King Magnus. You feel for him as his evolves, knows joy once again, earns respect and falls in love. But there are many more losses to be had.
The book takes place in Norway in the second half of the 11th century ending just after the turn of that century in 1103, when King Magnus of Norway dies. King Magnus plays a lead role in this novel, the only character that is not completely fictitious. But Turner makes you believe in every character and in everything that happens to them. Her research is admirable and her writing is beautiful. You will feel as though you are there, in the land of Vikings, and you will eat with them, hunt and train, celebrate and grieve with them. Turner’s descriptive abilities are sensational and often poetic. And there is enough action to keep action lovers engrossed. I read the first book in Turner’s Dunrundal Series, and at the end of this book was shocked and yet satisfied to find out exactly who Severn was, or to describe it better, who he became. So Severn is a prequel to the first book, A Hare in the Wilderness. I will need to now read more in the series. It is nice that you don’t have to read them in order, but it probably would be fun to read them in sequence. I am very glad I read this book.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 17, 2021Although 'Severn' is book 9 in The Kingdom of Durundal series, there is absolutely nothing repetitive or predictable about this book. The author has cleverly and covertly woven discreet threads of the earlier narrative into this story, concealing the intricacy of the narrative until the story carries the reader to the well-crafted moment of revelation in which the connections and relationships become clear and crystallise.
This is a tale of strength and survival, of brotherhood and friendship, and of death and destiny. Different narratives interweave and blend together, keeping the reader fully engaged in Severn's story. It is an enthralling story which moves at an exciting pace and is very hard to put down once started.
The cast of characters are varied and vibrant, with powerful and relatable motivations and interests. The settings are portrayed so vividly that the reader can almost feel the snap of the wind in their face or the crackle of a fire as it burns.
Turner's craft as an author is so finely honed that readers who are new to this series can easily read 'Severn' as a standalone, and then enjoy the earlier books in the series without having received significant spoilers.
'Severn' is a highly recommended read.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 5, 2021Severn is a delicious, masterfully crafted fantasy of exquisite detail and lavish world-building. Not the kind that makes you turn the pages searching for the place where the action starts; no no! This is the kind of sumptuous expository writing that makes readers…and especially me….start entire chapters over just to experience each artfully woven phrase another time.
I stood on high peaks, looking outward over pristine landscapes. I felt the rush of the wind through my hair; I smelled the smoke of fires beneath hearths. Turner’s writing not only sweeps you away, it carries you directly into the pages of her book and into the realm of Vikings. I stood beside the characters, watching and listening as if they were real…but they WERE real…. in every sense that matters to a reader.
This Viking-era tale follows the life of a youngster who is captured and must fight to survive. His trials and challenges are often grueling; yet, they pull you in. You can’t help yourself; you care about him almost immediately and as you watch him grow into a man, train for war, and fall in love, you will care even more.
If you’ve already read the Kingdom of Durundal series, this story will turn your head sideways with its thoroughly unexpected plot twist. If you haven’t….like I haven’t….you will be left ravenous for more. I find myself wishing this was a mini-series, not simply so I could visually see the spell-binding beauty and historically-accurate grunge of this remarkable tale, but so I could put the world on hold and binge-watch EVERY LAST CHAPTER
- Reviewed in the United States on April 30, 2021Twelve year old Severn is a sheltered boy in Orkney. He has been sheltered due to having an issue with panic attacks. When his village is raided, he is told to hide but witnesses the deaths of his parents and his older brother. King Magnus, a Viking king of Norway, leads the raid in Orkney and loses his cherished son to Severn’s brother and kills him in retaliation but takes Severn back to Norway believing that it is the wish of the gods. Rich in descriptive details, the brutal yet beautiful Norwegian history comes to life as we follow along with Severn. Great historical fiction with some wonderful characters. Highly Recommended.

Incredible story that draws you into the history and the lives of amazing people. The views of the Vikings is much closer to historical truth than most of the tales about them. Cannot say anything else because never in a million years did I see the last few chapters coming. Wow!!!
