Abandoned (Powell Sanctuary Book 1) Kindle Edition
★★ Now an Amazon Top 20 Bestseller! ★★
A dog named Slipper almost ruined my life.
The uncatchable stray snuck on the patio where I was waitressing and knocked me straight into Lee Powell's lap.
My fist slammed into his junk.
Then I accidentally flipped his breakfast platter onto his pants.
I thought it couldn't get any worse, but when I bring my brother to baseball practice, I discover his new coach is none other than Lee, owner and founder of Powell Dog Sanctuary, and he's not happy to see me.
I try to keep my distance from the hottest grump I've ever seen and ignore what it felt like curled against his broad, muscled chest.
But a bad case of the flu changes everything.
He stumbles on to my biggest secret and reveals a few of his own. He can't seem to stay away from me. He says he's too old for me, but I couldn't care less when he makes me feel cherished.
But then his past raises its ugly head, and he breaks our connection in a moment of suspicion.
Lee's afraid of being hurt again, but I'm the one left abandoned.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 10, 2025Love this age gap romance! The way that Lee loves Juniper is the way any woman wants their man to love them! From day 1 he couldn't help but love her and want her to always be safe and that he is good to her brother is huge. I love this romance and can't wait to read Strayed. The Powell Boys are one of a kind and will steal your heart.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 29, 2024I really enjoyed this book—it had good backstory, tension, and romance. While it would have been great to delve more into some of the side characters, this is the first book in a series so I’m sure they will get their time to shine.
While I usually don’t go for age gaps, this one was well done (and she’s mid-twenties which helps). I really rooted for Juniper throughout the book, and I was proud of the strength she showed by the end. I also appreciate the preteen moodiness shown by Lincoln.
There’s definitely several scenes with spice, but it doesn’t overpower the plot. Spice was also pretty vanilla, overall, I’d say 3 chili peppers.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 22, 2024I did enjoy this book thoroughly. It was a little too fast paced woth the story, and there were a few references to statements that were never actually made, but over all, this book ticked all the boxes. Grumpy, moody MMC, sweet and stubborn, tough FMC, tragedy, discord, found family, he falls first. I really liked this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 31, 2024I wanted so badly to like this story. The set up was good - between the characters’ pasts and baggage, and their meet-cute. However, a few areas made it a tough book to finish.
1. It often felt disjointed in the juxtaposition between the regular scenes and the spicy scenes. It was almost like different people had written them. For example, Juniper is somewhat shy, reserved, etc. but then she turns into a completely different person the second it turns spicy. Some characters are written that way and it works, this one just didn’t.
2. Lee sounded too much like he was written by a woman. Many of the things he would say didn’t match his gruff exterior, plus, no man I’ve ever met would be as forthright and… well, feminine in their explanation of their feelings. It also felt like he talked too much about his “hangups”, to the point that it seemed like if he was that self-aware then he wouldn’t be acting irrationally as often as he did.
Overall, I managed to finish it, but it was tough.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 12, 2023Full disclosure, if you put a dog in the blurb chances are I am going to read the book. I love dogs, and our hero’s family runs a dog rescue organization. What more could I want, they are basically living my dream life. Overall, I felt like this was a solid 3.5 star read for me.
Both of our characters in this book have some tragic backstory. Our hero, Lee was basically abandoned by his biological family before finding his found family, so abandonment issues are a big thing for him. And he is more than a little bit on the prickly side. Our heroine, Juniper lost her mother in the recent past and is basically now trying to raise her brother after her father went off the deep end.
I found Juniper as a character much more enjoyable than Lee, mostly because she works her bum off just to provide the best life possible for her brother. She works all the time all the while trying to be a parent when she has no idea how to be a parent. I like how she interacts with her best friend, her brother, and the mother of her brother’s best friend. She’s just likable. A girl’s girl. You want good things to come her way, because if anyone deserves it it’s her.
Lee in this book is 40, which for me means age gap, and oh boy do I love an age gap. However, nothing about him in this book feels age gap with the exception of a couple of mentions of how much of difference in age between the two of them, but they feel more like throw away lines. Lee has a really great backstory, with a lot of room to be fleshed out and to explain his grumpy personality, but when I read him POV I just wasn’t fully buying into his moods and his actions. That being sad, I love how great he is with his family and especially his nephew. I like a lot of the moments between him and Juniper, and I like how when the chemistry starts building up between them he puts her first.
I thought this was an enjoyable read (could have had more dogs in it, but that’s true for all books). I will definitely pick up another book by this author in the future, it was a good read for me.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 23, 2025Such a good read. Have not been this invested and cried over a book like this in a while it was exactly what I was looking for.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 11, 2024I really did adore this book. The characters were well rounded. It was an enjoyable and easy read. I will most likely be looking into other books by this author.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 29, 2025Oh my goodness, what can I say about this book other than it was heartwarming, heartwrenching, heartachingly lovely. I laughed, I teared up and I even got angry on behalf of the FMC Juniper. The way Juniper's life had turned on her had me rooting for her life to change when she met Lee. The heat between the two...woowee, I need a fan! This story had me from start to finish and I loved every second of it. Can't wait to read more by A. M. Wilson 😁

5.0 out of 5 stars A Heartwarming & Angsty Standalone!
This was a fantastic sweet and spicy romance with the perfect amount of angst to balance the fast moving plot. Its character-driven story and well written characters were easy to get invested in from the beginning, making this book hard to put down once you start reading. With the future addition of more books in this standalone series, the author ensures that the endearing characters readers had a taste of will get their own stories—and will (hopefully!) give a glimpse at past characters and their lives post-HEA. This book does have darker themes, so trigger warnings will be included at the end of my review on Goodreads for those that need them.
The balance in the plot between the romance and the tough moments was really well done, and despite this book dealing with some heavier topics, it never felt too dark or like anything other than a romance book. The author did a good job of telling an entertaining story that showcased both the tension between the MCs, and the darker issues they dealt with alone while also keeping things lighthearted and fun. This book covered a lot of ground and yet felt too short—even if the story is complete I want more of the characters!
This book delivered fully rounded MCs that only got better as their relationship evolved. This was one of those books where the characters were completely capable and likeable separately, but bringing them together offered a happiness they never knew they were missing. As a reader, those are some of my favourite stories to read, so to find a book like this one that's well written with great characterizations and an entertaining plot brought a smile to my face (and definitely didn’t disappoint now that I’ve read it!)
It was hard to put this book down, and I can imagine the rest in the series are going to be just as interesting as this first instalment. I really enjoyed this book, and can’t wait for the others to be released!

5.0 out of 5 stars Puppy love heaven
Loved this book greatly! My lil heart broke when a misunderstanding breaks both in the final 3rd, but I'm so thankful they repaired 6 had the HEA quickly. Both sides struggle with trust and I loved their story so much! SunshineXgrump is always a plus! And these 2 make the best story. Highly recommend 4/5 spicy with 5/5 coziness

5.0 out of 5 stars Heartfelt storytelling
This was a great read. Two broken people who deserve the very best HEA. The author handled some really tough subjects well. I loved the characters in this one and will definitely be looking for more from this author.
T/W - death of a parent & physical assault on page.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun, sweet, heartbreaking and beautiful
I saw this on the author’s page on Tik Tok and immediately added it.
What a beautiful, lovely story! It has a good pace and even though there’s a insta-connection/attraction between the mcs, their relationship was well developed, with it being shown and not just told.
Only a few pages in and I already wanted all the other books that haven’t been released yet, which is a great sign.
Trigger warnings are in place though.
